Ultimate sun protection for adventures with the Crater Lake Hoodie
What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"This sun hoodie is a game-changer for desert hiking and high-altitude adventures. The UPF 50 protection is serious business, and I love how the three-piece hood covers my neck completely. The thumbhole cuffs stay put during scrambles, and the fabric breathes incredibly well even in 90-degree heat."
Intense heat has never deterred our outdoor pursuits, and neither will harmful UV exposure thanks to the Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake Hoodie. This comprehensive sun protection system allows us to hike, climb, and explore confidently without concern for skin damage. The innovative three-piece hood shields both front and back neck areas, while thumbhole cuffs secure sleeves in position, enabling the lightweight, moisture-managing fabric to deflect solar radiation during summer's most intense conditions.

It does it's job
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I have been wearing it for two months and I like it. I like the fit, it protects my skin from sun as expected. The only two things that I don't like it's neck attached to the hood it makes you look like you wearing a hijab and material that pills to easily.

My favorite sun shirt
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I went on a tear and bought a bunch of different long sleeve sun shirts and the Crater Lake is my favorite so far. I bought a few Freefly shirts, OR ActiveIce and OR Echo shirts. The Echo is the lightest but the sun protection is low so I only wear it if it's overcast. The ActiveIce is heavier and less breathable but still nice, the Freefly shirts are very breathable and comfortable but they also don't offer the same sun protection.

Husband loves it
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
My husband is 6’3” 250 lbs and the XL fits him well. He recently wore it on a 3-day backpacking trip and barely took it off. It kept him comfortable in a variety of temps and protected him from the sun.

Workhorse Sun Hoodie
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I bought this for the up coming hiking season and so happy I did. First trip; took it up Mt. Whitney. Came off the mountain with no sun burn and didn't have to wear my puff jacket neither because the hoodie did provide some warmth!

Good sun hoodie

This was the best of several sun hoodies I tried. Nice lightweight fabric and good hood coverage. One star off because the sleeves were a tad shorter than I'd ideally like to use the thumb holes.

No More Sunburn!
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I've used my Crater Lake Hoody (and a Patagonia Capilene Daily Cool Hoody) for hiking, backpacking, kayaking, fishing, mountain biking, and doing trail work for the past couple summers. At first, I thought these long-sleeve sun shirts would be too hot, clingy, and stuffy. But I figured I'd give them a try since I hate wearing sunscreen so much. And since I've been wearing these shirts, I don't need to apply it to my upper body at all. I'm extremely pleased with the performance of this hoody to keep the baking sun off my skin and keep me comfortable while working hard in hot conditions (in fact, I just bought another one). The fabric is thin, stretchy, and breathable. The hood fits nicely, and helps protect your neck when it's not on your head. As you sweat, evaporation from the fabric helps keep you a bit cooler. It dries fairly quickly, but feels really nice when damp. Durability has been good so far. And it's a sharp-looking piece you can wear in town. The fit is perfect - not too clingy, but not flappy and loose - I'm a lanky 6' 5", 210 lbs, and a Large fits perfectly. My wife, who's pretty picky about clothing, also picked up a couple of these shirts, and she absolutely loves them! Highly recommended. BTW - the Patagonia hoody fits a bit loosely compared to the MH hoody, so I use it exclusively for trail maintenance as it gets really beat up and dirty. If you're a bigger person, the Patagucci may fit you better.
