Mountain Hardwear Butterman 1/2-Zip Top - Men's
Mountain HardwearButterman 1/2-Zip Top - Men's

Feels great, performs better.

The Mountain Hardwear Men's Butterman 1/2-Zip Top's buttery feel is only surpassed by its technical performance on the mountain. Its Wick.Q fabric offers optimal moisture management, dries quickly, and stretches for mobility. An active fit slims the Butterman around your body for a better fit, and there's a 1/2-zip mock neck for ventilation.

Great Trail Running Shirt

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

I love the length and how soft and comfortable it is. This is a good in between shirt for fall or early spring to run on the trails.

Great gift for dad

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Got this as a gift for my step-dad and he absolutely loved it. He wears it with as a casual dressy layer with nicer pants and shoes for those nights out with the business guys. Loved the fit and the lighter-weight composition.

Comfy long sleeve.

To me this fit perfectly. I like the fabric and durability of it. I use it mostly as a layer under my zip up hoodie for the really cold mornings.

Bought for my husband
Good stretchy fit. Perfect for cool days on the trail or as a base layer.

I like it.

Very nice shirt but the sleeve is too long, don't understand why.

Good product but sizing is tricky

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large

Great product and a great baselayer. The sizing is tricky though. The body fit great through out it but the sleeves strangely ran really long.

Pretty good

This is a pretty decent active top. Fabric is soft, wicks moisture well and the zip top is great for ventilation when it heats up.

This is the second Butterman I've owned, and it seems like they went with a little more active fit this year than last year. One thing that hasn't changed is the loooooong sleeves...Please, Mountain Hardwear, understand that not everyone has chimpanzee arms.

Overall, a good shirt for active pursuits in cool weather.

I Don't Think So...

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Size Bought: Large

With an uncertain purpose and a fit which is likely to be ideal for very few, this shirt is a bit schizophrenic. I returned it.

Fit: I’m 6’2” tall, 175 lbs. The size large is a bit baggy (not really an “active fit” on my frame) and the sleeves are very long (although the body length is spot on). My sleeve size is 34”-35”, and the sleeves on this shirt have an extra 2-3” in length which annoyingly gather at the wrist. They’re more than long enough for thumb holes, but there are none.

Fabric: The material is quite soft and stretchy with a weight along the lines of a light base layer.

Bottom line: This shirt doesn’t fit as a base layer should, and it doesn’t have the fabric weight of an effective mid-layer. Along with the annoyingly long sleeves, this item is in search of a purpose which may not exist. Like an earlier reviewer, I own the previous version of this shirt and love it. The previous model fit is more athletic and the fabric seems slightly more substantial. This new version misses the mark on all counts. I just can’t recommend a schizophrenic garment.

A plus shirt

This is a go to shirt. The material is so soft yet durable. It competes now with my Arc'terc Motus. The Motus can be worn into the 30's but this shirt is better in the low 40's up to 50's as the wind slightly pushes through it. Pay attention to sizing as its different than other brands with a mixture of L and XL features. I choose the Large when I normally go XL. The collar locks up tight and zipper length is perfect for cooling without going to far down. The length is perfect to wear over or tucked in depending on extra clothing and weather. The chest is a hair tighter (45 chest size)than the Motus but looks worthy and works well . If I was forced to say something adverse, it would be the sleeves. The length of sleeve is only slightly long but, their is 3 inches of slack or baggy-ness on the sleeve just before the wrist tightens up to keep it all together. Good looking two tone colors that allow you to differentiate. Excellent overall performance shirt as a first or second layer. Holds true to shape after many washes too. But fit IS subject to trying on. I wanted another one but sale price went away.

Nothing like last years butterman

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

I have one of last years butterman 1/2 zip. I wish I'd bought more. If you like years, you'll hate this one. Slim fitting, and the material is NOTHING like a butterman. I don't fault Mountain Hardwear for making this product, but they shouldn't call it a butterman. Nothing buttery about it.
Sleeves are long but I have no problem with that. I have a broad chest so it was very snug & tight. XL should have fit, but doesn't

Returned

Liked the fit through the body but sleeves way too long (bought a medium)
