Eclipse Half-Zip Hoodie

The first few hours of any alpine start are dreadfully cold when you're trekking or skiing. One thing's for sure, though, you wouldn't be able to survive without the Mountain Equipment Men's Eclipse Half-Zip Hoodie keeping you warm. Not only does it make the first few moments out of the tent manageable, but it also wicks moisture, dries quickly, and stretches for a reliable performance on skintracks, glacial traverses, and summit attempts.

  • Heavyweight baselayer for skiing and mountaineering during winter
  • Pontetorto Tecnopile stretches, wicks moisture, and dries quickly
  • Polygiene treatment resists odor-causing microbial growth
  • Close-fitting hood with offset half-zip for ventilation
  • Thumbholes secure the sleeves to seal out glove drafts

Best Baselayer beats the Pat R1

Slightly more fitted but not tight. Quick drying. Awesome neck gaiter. Nice fitting stretch hood. Long enough so no skin shows when u bend down to keep warmer. Thumb loops like R1

    Thanks for the review, Peter!!

    Warm and stretchy

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium

Bought this one for 10-20 degree semi-technical multi-day mountaineering. Had a basic sunnhoodie underneath and a wind stopper over it and felt good (while active).
Definitely runs small. Get one size up your usual size for sure.
FWIW, couldn’t sleep with it on. Was a bit too warm for my sack (10 degrees), but main reason was the size. Felt way too tight. Got uncomfortable at night moving around in the sleeping bag — only reason for 4/5.

    I want another one!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: small

I've used this twice now on some AT daytrips first time temps were in the 30s second time in the single digits and teens. wore under my Ortovox biz poe vest and was super comfortable. the hood and zip up mask are fantastic and easy to use. I may need a secondone for backup

    love this thing

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small

This is great for any activity where face exposure may be any issue. One of my favs for sure

    Go-to for Touring!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL

I bought this for touring in the morning when it's old enough to need something to cover my face/ears for warmth, but by the top I'm warmed up and it's annoying to have a buff and extra stuff to deal with. Love that I can just start with this hood on and zipped up, and as soon as I heat up I just rip the hood off and unzip the neck a bit without breaking stride. The material is also a great thickness for touring, thick enough to be warm, but won't murder you with heat when the sun comes out.

The cool hood also works awesome to ear under a hat/helmet for the super cold days. I really love how the face mask part has the side zip, so it's not uncomfortable on your face just feels like a normal buff/face mask.

Fit is very slim/athletic. At 6' 195lbs I generally get XL baselayer tops because I like them loose. However, XL with this is still snug even. Not in a bad way though, works well for the intended use.

    Functional Ninja

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: large

Usually, I see ninja hoodies as a gimmick, but this is one amazing ninja hoody. First of all, it a super technical wicking fabric that give a lot of warmth for the weight. Secondly, the hoody is designed with climbing functionality in mind. There is extra fabric in the chin so when you're belaying, you don't feel the uncomfortable pulling that you might on others. Not sure who spent so much time designing a ninja hoody, but I'm glad they did. It's stretchy fabric, has thumbies to keep the sleeves from shifting, and it has polygiene to reduce smell on multi-day trips. It's more like a piece of equipment rather than just a hoody.

    Great shirt

I have two now. Expensive but I wear this skiing everyday. The hood goes under my helmet. It keeps the back of my neck dry and cozy. The collar serves as a balaclava and goes over face. When it warms up it unzips or I pull it down off my face. I usually wear light underwear under it like silk blend. Over it I’ll wear a light thin primaloft vest and a shell and I’m warm enough. It’s surprisingly warm. I used to wear a merino wool sweater. This is a better set up. Lighter and not constricting. Now I want the jacket. European made. Best quality. One thing though, the zipper ‘garage ‘ seems to be sewn on the wrong side

      Must Have Base Layer

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large

This is my go to Next to Skin Base Layer for Touring and Resort alike. I found that it is a little warmer than I expected and usually only wear this and a synthetic insulated layer to keep the chill off on the way up and throw a shell over on at the top. My favorite feature is the full zip hood which gives you maximum coverage from the elements and fits great under my helmet.

      New Favorite Base Layer

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XL

Good stuff. I've worn my Eclipse hoodie under a light puffy and a shell in weather down to 10ºF and was nice and warm. The price is a kick in the wallet, but well worth it. The material feels good next to your skin, the thumb holes help eliminate coverage gaps, and the balaclava hood is perfect for keeping those nasty winds off your mug. I can't speak to its durability but I have no doubt it will hold up if I take care of it; Mountain Equipment is good like that.

      Quality Issue; Seems open up

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: small

I got the Eclipse about 2 months ago and used it only three times for recreational use on colder evenings. I really like the hood, design and the color. The material is nice and warm, with good breathability. Nevertheless, there are some serious quality issues. The seems on the bottom and the arms open up. I have only hand washed it.

      Straight Ninja Hoody!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large

Wonderful skin feel, amazing hoody that is so big and zips up so high it is almost a balaclava. No need to worry about gusts going in around your collar on this bad boy! Napoleon pocket is a nice touch as are the elastic cuffs with thumbholes just giving that little bit extra versatility. Great for early morning bouldering sessions when its still crisp out!

      Runs small

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: XL

I'm 5'11, 200 lbs, 46" chest. XL was way too small. Fabric was slightly itchy to my skin, but I've always hated all but the most comfortable fabrics. Probably wouldn't bother most. Other than that, cool design and good quality.

      The Super-R1 Hoody

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: M

I'm a fan of the R1 hoody and owned two of them. The one thing I couldn't get over with them was the scuba-style hood. They never fit comfortably with a helmet and don't cover as much of my face as I'd like when I'm shivering at a belay getting doused with spindrift. I've always added a wool buff over/around the hood and left the zipper down to about neck height to get the versatility and protection I wanted. After buying the Eclipse Hoodie, I sold one of my (cleaner) R1's to a buddy.

The Eclipse has a unique, hinged/gusseted balaclava hood which allows the front to be easily pulled over helmet chin straps and comfortably up to your nose. Two-thumbs up for innovative designs!

Out of the box the gridded fleece feels and fits very similar to the current R1 but the fabric is a touch thinner/lighter. It has a lighter gridded fleece for the pits, hem and hood like the older R1's used to have. Additionally, like the older R1's it has an offset zipper, which I also prefer for its comfort.

We'll see how this holds up on some climbs this winter. I'm expecting it to be on par with the R1 in terms of warmth, wicking, etc. but better in terms of usability and comfort. Sometimes it's the little things that matter when you're freezing your ass off in the winter. :)

Also, FWIW the yellow color isn't nearly as offensive or bright as the stock picture makes it out to be.

      How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
      Natural Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
