    Nice piggy.

Want one haul bag that will last your entire big wall career? You should try the Metolius Durathane Half Dome Haul Bag. This medium size haul bag is ideal for smaller walls or a second bag for huge hauls. The Durathane material is much more abrasion resistant than vinyl-coated nylon found on most other bags. RF welded seams and a comfortable suspension system that tucks away in seconds gives this pig a nice clean profile for hauling. It won't snag on every flake it comes across. The river-bag style closure will keep the weather out of the inside where you'll find gear loops and a zippered pocket for smaller items. On the bottom is a drain hole for any spilled water and a full strength haul point for bringing along other piglets.

    Haul Bag

I bought this bag for my first two day climb: the South Face of Washington Column in Yosemite. We hauled to dinner ledge, fixed a few more pitches, and spent the night on the ledge. The bag held up great. We hauled on low angle terrain and there is no sign of damage. I also really appreciate the river-bag style closure on the Metolius Half Dome. Not only is it water proof, it's critter proof. Another team on the ledge had a haul bag with a simple draw string closure, and their food was ransacked by squirrels. Our bag was untouched. As for the size, we definitely could have done this wall with a smaller bag, but the Half Dome is big enough that it should give us space for larger objectives in the future.

      Great features

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This bag was the perfect size for two people and two days on el capitan. It held up very well and the scratches didnt go very deep. Love the internal pocket and the offset straps for easy access! Backpack mode was a little uncomfortable since the bottom of the bag goes a little lower than the hip strap and cuts into my back. It would be quite annyong for long approaches imo.

      A++

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I like these bags so much more than the BDs. They have more secure closures (so I can actually check the bag in on the airplane) and do way better in the rain. Bag already has much abrasion after one go up El Cap even with padding, but it's not too bad. I also really appreciate how quickly Metolius will send replacement straps to you if you happen to lose one.

The perfect size for any Grade V or VI wall. It's big, you can stand on it, but you can also reach stuff at the bottom. Throw smaller bags, poop tube, ledge, etc on a catch line if you need em and you've got a good setup.

The durathane material is bomber. The construction on the bottom is super solid. Like some others have said, the roll-top closure material at the top of the bag showed a lot of wear after one wall. I don't see this being a problem though, just pack it well and try not to let it get stuck on lips.

Backpack straps are good. The gear loops and small zippered bag inside are sweet.

          Perfect size

          Really solid bag

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Durathane material seems to be bombproof so far, even on terrible low-angle hauls. The webbing and collar fabric do get scraped up -- maybe some Seam Grip would help keep them intact longer? In any case, the materials are heavy enough to last a long time.

Backpack carrying is decent too. I have a long back, and the shoulder straps & hip belt just barely work with the load lifters completely tightened. Straps are arranged well for cinching down and securing the load.

Can't say I'd trust it to keep all water out in a storm if the water pools up in the top. I think it would fare better than the BD & Fish bags but not as well as the Runout Customs or Yates models.

          Great bag, Cheaper Materials

I just did a wall with a friend who has an older version of this bag. The differences in materials were quite apparent. The top closure system is now cordura, which is no where near as abrasion proof as the vinyl one on the older design. Other changes were apparent, but did not affect the bag in use. I feel that I got the value I expected, but would have been happier with a more durable closure fabric. Mine suffered a hole in it in just one wall, all be it a seven day wall with multiple very hard hauls. The NA wall is very hard on haul bags. I would buy this again.

The back pack system is very good on this bag. We carried 85 lb loads down without difficulty.

Great 1 or 2 day bag

As the old adage goes..."if you've got space, you'll fill it" That is certainly the case with this haul bag. My planning is entirely based on exactly how much hauling I want to do; then pick the bag. This bag is burly and really stands up to the abuse of hauling while being well engineered, constructed and thought out. Getting the stuff you need is really easy as well with the zippered pocket. The bottom attachments work well for your poop tube and possibly a ledge if you are in the lap of luxury...(see comment about hauling).

              Metolius Haul Bag

With years of building haul bags under their belts Metolius should have it down, and they do! This bag is so bomb proof, I think Osama Bin Ladin is hiding inside. Buy this if you want a bag that is a good meduim size, and will never let you down. Quick tip - duct tape all the fabric round the bottom and top rims, the tape will take the abuse of being dragged up a wall, allowing your bag many more years of use.

                Update: Obama killed Osama.

                Good day to you sir.

so how is the bag holding up?

                Bomber

This bag is great. After two shorter walls (2 and 3 days) it has shown a little wear on the nylon straps and hauling points but that is to be expected with any bag. The durathane is SO SOLID. It'll scratch but you'll be hard pressed to puncture or tear it. It's plenty roomy, has nice little extras like the zipper pouch, gear loops on the inside, and the drain hole in the bottom which make life so much easier on the wall. Excellent bag.
