We just built a campus board http://www.highinfatuation.com/blog/how-to-build-a-campus-board/ using these rungs. I know you can make them with dowels, but they are way more incut and jug-like than these rungs. I think for the price, it saves a lot of time to buy the Metolius ones. They are great--very smooth and solid, well-shaped. We were surprised to notice that if you line up 3 rungs side-by-side, the total width is just a little more than a 4 foot sheet of plywood. So I definitely recommend laying them out first, after marking the distance, before you screw them down.
