Not a fan for cx racing
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: Runs small
Donnelly PDX's were out of stock and love Maxxis mtb tires which are mounted on 3 of my bikes so took a chance with this Maxxis "All Terrane" which looked/sounded good on paper.
Upon receipt I noticed the knobs are even taller than the photos, which wouldn't be such a bad thing, but even with low pressure (24 psi) or high they only measure 31mm in width (see photo). I mounted to wider carbon rims and DT Swiss aluminum with same results. Not even close to the 33mm advertised (or 34mm actual of the PDX on same rims) but at least you won't have to worry about the UCI calipers at the start.
Did a few dry races then raced a super punchy, technical cx race course that included a sand pit. They hooked up nicely in the damp grass including climbs and blasted through the sand pit but I lacked confidence in the slick off cambers and single track that I normally excel in due to their narrowness.
Even though they're 120tpi, they feel super stiff and not supple at all. Thus the 2 star review as although they may be durable and ok for some gravel or single track fun, they are not a great cx race tire which explains why you don't see even their sponsored pro's racing them or find many reviews.
Into the scrap bin and await Donnelly's to arrive back in stock...
