Environmentally-conscious comfort to ease your practice.

Remaining present during yoga practice is difficult enough, so don't make it any harder on yourself by having a mat that hurts your wrists, knees, or conscience. The Eko Yoga Mat from Manduka is a comfortable, cushioned mat made of non-Amazonian natural tree rubber that's 99% latex-free and without any PVC or toxic, non-biodegradable glues, so you can stay in svanasana without stressing your joints or the environment. The closed-cell top surface is cushioned and moisture-resistant, while the grippy bottom layer prevents wandering mat syndrome and can be used as the mat surface if you need a gripper platform for difficult poses (scorpion pose, anyone?). Best of all, once your Eko reaches the end of its long life, you can dispose of it knowing that it's completely biodegradable and non-toxic, so you're leaving the smallest impact possible.

    • Made of sustainable, non-Amazonian natural tree rubber
    • No PVC or toxic plastics
    • 99% latex-free
    • 3-layer cushioned design

    Everything About It = Perfect

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Amazing mat, quality, and price! I am 6 feet tall and opted for the longer mat just to be safe. I'm sure you can get away with the standard size, but who doesn't like more room? The thickness is perfect and the grip is great. You do get a rubbery smell upon at first, but I honestly love the smell. FYI the charcoal color is bit lighter in person than it shows on the screen. Love it!

    Great Yoga Mat

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This mat was a great upgrade from my old Walmart one.... A million times better! It's got a great grip and it's comfortable enough that it doesn't hurt my joints to use on hard wood floors. Yes, it's got a smell when you take it out of the package but it fades away and I don't think it's that bad to begin with.

    Great upgrade.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I had my old yoga mat from 2008...so it was time to upgrade! I like the 5mm cush of this mat and that it was made from sustainable rubber. Like everyone says, out of the package it is stinky. I have used it twice now and the smell is gradually going away. I do think I will be getting a towel to put under my hands for sessions where I get sweatier to keep me from sliding. Overall, this mat is comfy, functional and grippy! I would definitely recommend.

    Great upgrade.

    Well, it's not Velcro.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I decided to upgrade my mat after getting several years of use out of my old one, and was looking for something that wouldn't break the bank and that would keep me steadily in place while I attempted some of the more difficult vinyasa poses. After weighing many of the reviews on Backcountry, Manduka's, and several other sites, I decided to give the eKO a run. So here goes:

Initially, does it smell bad? Yes, yes it does. Out of the package there is a strong smell of new rubber and an odor that reminded me of an old Alaska canery that I drove by last year; but, as per the instructions on the wrapping, I hung it up outside in the shade for a couple of hours, and the smell was pretty much gone.
As for the grip on this mat, it still has its weaknesses when it comes to keeping me in place. I'm 6'4, and 215 lbs., so the expectation that this mat would cement me in place throughout the entire practice was not what I had in mind when I purchased it, but I was hoping for a little more stability than I've experienced thus far when I start to get the heat of an active practice working. My hands and feet still tend to slide while in simple poses, causing me to have to readjust instead of pushing for a deeper stretch.
It is heavier than most mats I've worked with, but, hey, it's rubber, 5mm, and meant for use at the gym.

    Doing it's job well

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This mat weighs a ton and stinks to high heaven at first (and upon subsequent spray-downs the stink recurs), however it is truly non-slip. I take it to hot yoga and there is not slippage.at.all. The skin on my dry heels is sloughing off on it. The mat grips and does not let go.

    Love this mat!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Super awesome yoga mat. Just enough cushion without being too thick. It felt a little heavy at first, but worth a little extra weight for the cushion. Agree with other reviewers commenting on the strong smell - I've aired mine out for a few days and it still smells pretty strong. Hoping that goes away soon!

    Quality Yoga Mat

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I was thrown off with how heavy this mat was when I first picked it up compared to the mats I have used in the past but after getting some use out of it could not imagine using something else. The new rubber smell is very potent and airing it out in the winter time proved to be a challenge but does not last long. It is very sticky and offers firm support.

    Where is the floor?

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I wouldn't know I am too lost in my breathing to notice the ground. Other than how rooted I feel.

It has been a long time since I've been able to sit on my knees on a hard surface or not feel my spine jab into the ground below. This mat is a bit heavy but its the perfect size, sticky and has enough cushion for me!

A little stinky at first but its a big rubber mat and is to be expected during the break in period. I got this with a Yoga towel from Manduka that I love!

    Nothing better than natural rubber

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This yoga mat is a pleasure to use. It is grippy even with a light amount of sweat and offers firm supportive cushion. The natural rubber has a slight smell that when away after a couple weeks.

    Great yoga mat

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Much lighter than the pro and almost as good.

    Pretty Rad

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Size Bought: Standard

I recently got back into regular yoga practice and was noticing how much I was slipping around on my previous mat. On the recommendation of several friends, i picked up this one and have been extremely happy. The amount of padding is perfect and I appreciate the slightly longer and wider size than other mats. The rubber smells terrible at first, so make sure you air it out for a few days(outside if you can) and I recommend using the 50/50 vinegar /h2o solution suggested in another review. Anyways, I love it, which is something I've never said about a mat before.

    excellent grip

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I never slip or find my mat moving under me. plenty of padding as well.

    Can't imagine a better mat

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: standard

After years of thinking about it I finally started doing yoga. I haven't been that many times but I am really enjoying it. So far this mat is amazing! It does have a smell at first but let it air out for a couple of days in some fresh air and it will dissipate. You can also wipe it down with a 50/50 water/vinegar solution to help it out as well. I like that it is a couple inches wider and a few inches longer than a normal yoga mat without feeling giant in class. I'm 6'1" and I think that the standard is perfect for me. I can fully lay flat on it without a problem. The 5mm offers just the right amount of extra cushion that I need for my aging knees. The mat is also very gripy and I don't slip at all on it.

    THIS MAT *heart eyes*

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is Tera, Tyson's girlfriend. I LOVE THIS MAT. I've been through my fair share of yoga mats and this one takes the cake. It's amazingly grippy and provides just the right amount of cushion without being too squishy. It's very supportive everywhere, as opposed to traditional foam yoga mats that can get worn down in some places. Mandukas have always seemed a little too pricey for me, but I don't think I can ever go back now - this mat is totally, completely worth it. Disclaimer: this mat does have a rubbery smell to it and it is heavier than your average yoga mat.

    Excellent for hot yoga

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I like this mat. It provides more padding and support for my knees. I use it for hot yoga and it has a stickier non slip feel than other mats I have used.

A mat you can stick with

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Size Bought: Long

As I've gotten more serious with my practice, I upgrade to the eKO mat and it was a wonderful change. I regularly practice on a concrete surface but also carpet at home. The mat is think enough to provide plenty of cushion for a larger guy like myself. It's also heavy enough and doesn't stick TO you when you step or jump; it just stays in place. The closed cell rubber top us easy to clean and grips well. There's a little slippage when it gets wet, but I'm still new to the practice and it's still a new mat. As we both get broken in a little more, I'm sure we'll be fine. Otherwise, it's very grippy. It does have a wonderful (maybe?) new mat smell, but I do recommend letting it air out in a shaded area. After a few days of airing out, the smell will greatly dissipate. I'm 6'2" and fairly broad framed guy and the long mat is a pretty good fit. I wish it were just a bit wider, but it's not that big of a deal.

I'm a big fan of this mat and recommend it to everyone. It wasn't an easy choice between this mat and a Manduka Pro (which has a lifetime warranty), but the natural rubber composition was the tie breaker. A friend has the Pro and get a little jealous when I see it, but ultimately I felt the natural materials were better for me and the environment.

    Initial Impressions

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got the long version of this mat and I am glad I did. I am very pleased with the material and thickness of this mat. Performed well in an hour long hot yoga class w/no towel

After futher use I am very pleased. I have taken this mat on multiple camping trips and outdoor yoga sessions (my favorite) and it performs better with wear.

does have a slight smell, but I don't mind it. Reminds me of what a rubber four square ball smells like on the playground.. lol

    Initial Impressions

    Amazing, Grippy Mat

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

This mat will put you in your place, in a good way. It's super sticky so you won't move, even during a strenuous workout.

    Love this mat

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am a BUTIyoga instructor and this is the mat I teach on. I also use this mat in Hot Yoga and it absorbs all of the moisture and keeps the grip.

The mat has a strong smell at first but will dissipate over time.

Great mat for the price if you are a dedicated yogi and need non-slip for sweaty practice.

    Super bad smell!!!!

When I first received the smell was super strong... when I unwrapped the item and unwrapped it even my hands smelled! Laid it out for a month, wiped down with 1/2 vinegar & 1/2 water 3 times, then water once. Unfortunately this still did not get rid of the strong smell! I should have just returned as now I am only eligible for a store credit. Heard great things about the product and had seen some reviews stating the smell could be bad but didn't anticipate this. Really wanted it to work but I think I will start again with research on what to get.

I had the same issue. I received my first one and the smell infected my apartment (just opening it). Backcountry was amazing about replacing it, but the second one smelled the same. Such a shame because I love the mat and color, but it must be a design defect from Manduka with this particular mat!

The same thing happened to me, but once I let it air out in the shade outside, it was much better. Leaving it inside didn't help, taking it out to the fresh air was the trick. It's as if it fills the room and can't air out anymore. After several hours, though, it's perfectly fine and I love the mat.
