Mammut Nordwand Pro HS Hooded Jacket - Men's

Climb up, ski down, repeat.

The Mammut Men's Nordwand Pro HS Hooded Jacket is an all-around performer in high altitudes whether you're ski touring or alpine climbing. Gore-Tex Pro gives this light, thin, three-layer shell high levels of waterproof protection that remains extremely breathable for active endeavors. Fully taped seams enhance waterproofing by preventing moisture, snowfall, and raindrops from seeping through.

Mammut equipped the Nordwand with zippers under each arm for ventilated airflow, and the powder skirt is removable to transition between skiing and climbing. The hood uses two adjustments to cinch around either climbing or skiing helmets with ease. There's a jacket-to-pant interface with Mammut's Nordwand Pro HS Pant for complete coverage, and both front pockets are accessible even with a backpack or harness on.

Great wintersports shell

I have primarily used this jacket for snowshoeing and ski/snowboarding. I also own the ArcTeryx Theta AR. I bought this one to have a trimmer fitting alternative potentially for climbing. It definitely is a slimmer fit compared to the Theta AR but I was able to wear a light insulated layer and a mid-weight base-layer underneath without feeling uncomfortably restricted. In length it comes down to about 2 cm below my iliac crests. I have not had any problems with the fit and finish of this jacket and honestly harbor no gripes there. The hood/collar is a little awkward as it is best either completely unzipped and splayed out (and catching snow) or zipped up with hood up (which is excellent but I don't always want the hood up). The pockets sit high which is fine except I did find myself pining for an external chest pocket or sleeve pocket. There is an interior zip pocket on the left which was nice for stashing an RFID card. It has a removable powder skirt as well but I haven't tried to remove it.

Mammut Nordwand

Have this jacket alongside Westcomb Revenant with eVent, Millet with 3L Stretch Goretex and a Rab with Polartech Neoshell. If this can be had for under $400 on sale at BC, I say ok, but at $774, there are much better jackets to be found. The build quality compared to Westcomb or Rab is lacking. The wrist cuffs allow for undercuff gloves, but came with very wimpy velcro strap that Mammut replaced under warranty with a beefier velcro strap that works great. The neck collar cuts wind but velcro hooks can be irritating against my neck unless the collar is either folded all the way down or zipped entirely. I like the lean cut, but there are too many design flaws to make me consider buying or recommending another. Wind/water proofiness is adequate, but again, the 3L Stretch Millet or the eVent Revenant is superior in every regard. If I had to give up one of the 4 jackets, the Nordwand would be the first to go without 2nd thought.

I just purchased a Nordwand HS Pro in size large and feel that the jacket is too snug across the chest and arm openings at the shoulders. I am 6' - 0" and 190 pounds and a large is typically adequate for my frame. Not in this case. I will probably need to get an XL as I feel like I'm suspended from my armpits with this size.

Another item of note is that the newer version of this jacket is called the HS Pro and it does NOT include a sleeve pocket. This is disappointing as that has proven to be a useful feature for accessing important, lightweight items.

I agree, the jacket cuts into my armpits. Otherwise, very high quality. Orange is very bright color. The picture here doesn't make it justice.
