Not many people are strictly single-discipline climbers; it's more fun to switch between sport, trad, bouldering, and gym climbing, which means you either need a quiver of shoes or a pair that can handle everything you throw at it, like the Mad Rock Lyra Women's Climbing Shoe. With a moderately asymmetrical shape, a shape-retaining Tek Flex synthetic upper, and relatively flat sole, the Lyra can move from bolt-clipping to pebble-wrestling to gear-plugging to plastic-pulling without sacrificing performance or comfort. The Arch Flex polycarbonate midsole and dual hook-and-loop straps provide a supportive, glove-like fit, while the 3.8mm Science Friction 3.0 rubber sticks to slabs, jibs, and dishes with equal aplomb.

For the boulderers and serious sport climbers out there, the Lyra features a 3D-molded Torque heel, which has a super-snug fit and has been outfitted with textured X5 rubber for maximum grip, hold, and sensitivity when you're heel hooking your way up your newest problem. There's a rubber patch on top of the toe, too, to assist with toe hooks, and a slightly elastic R2 rand that hugs your foot without squeezing it to death.

  • Tek Flex synthetic upper
  • 3.8mm Science Friction 3.0 rubber with 2.2mm R2 rubber rand
  • Arch Flex AES polycarbonate midsole
  • 3D-molded Torque heel with X5 rubber
  • Power Upper rubber toe patch
  • Polyester footbed
  • Moderately asymmetrical shape
  • Two hook-and-loop straps

Ordered 2 sizes large

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

After reading a lot of reviews, the general consensus was that the shoes run small. I am a size 8 and played it safe and ordered a size 10 and am comfortable with this size. I ordered this shoe because I wanted something intermediately aggressive but not compromising in comfort. This shoe has a good sturdy toe that allows you to get those tiny foot holds. However, the shoe box is wide enough that my four little toes are only slightly curled, and my big toe has plenty of room. I love having two velcro straps so I can easily take them on and off in the gym and occasionally slip my heal out. These shoes also provide a good heal hook. Last but not least they're very atheistically pleasing and I have received a bunch of compliments for them. I have been climbing with them for about 6 months and have no complaints!
I ordered the Mad Rock Lotus at the same time and compared them side by side and decided on Lyria because I felt Lyria had a wider toe box and offered more comfort.

Run small & appearance degrades fast.

I gave it 3 stars if one was to purchase it full price. I bought it when it was on sale, so personally from my experience i would give it 4 stars.
I am typically size 7 and I ordered this shoes in size 9. It was still kinda small. But after a month of wearing it, either my foot got used to the pain or the shoes expanded; the shoes fit well now.
I had this shoes for about half a year now and I climb 3 times a week indoors. The shoes started showing signs of wear and tear after a few months, but it still functions well. So the cosmetic part of the shoe degraded pretty fast.
When I climb in this shoes, I feel secure with my foot on holds.
Overall, my climbing seems to be better with these shoes. The shoes start to look like it's falling apart early on, but still functions for at least 3 months after this. I'm happy with this shoes for the price I paid.

Great shoes!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 8.5

given the 'runs small' comments, i decided to order couple of sizes bigger. I usually wear a street size 7 (flats) and ordered 8.5 which fits perfectly. Just broke them in today and they felt snug but wasnt painful on my toes. Note that I have narrow feet. (my previous pair was a La Sportiva Tarantulace 37).

Love the rubber! Was very sticky and gave me confidence on tiny nubs. However, wasn't so aggressive that the rubber will quickly wear off.

Awesome shoe, but runs SMALL!

Now that I finally have the right size I love these shoes! I have very narrow feet with high arches, and I usually have to buy lace up shoes because I can't get velcro shoes tight enough on my feet. After reading all the reviews I decided to give the Lyras a try. I usually wear a 7.5 to an 8 in most women's climbing shoes, and after reading the reviews decided to go with an 8.5. These were way too tight! I could get my foot in the shoe, but I'm pretty sure there was no blood flow to my feet. I returned these and ordered a size 9 with no problems. (Thank you Backcountry!) The size 9 was still very snug. They were a little painful on my toes the first couple of bouldering sessions, but they did stretch a little and mold to my foot. I have been using them for about 4 months now for bouldering and sport climbing and they have broken in nicely. They are very grippy. Great for edging, heel hooks, toe hooks, etc. I have not tried them for slabs or crack climbing. These are very secure on my foot. I have not had any issues with my narrow foot slipping inside the shoe, like with previous velcro shoes. They are nice and snug around my heel and arch of my foot reasonably snug in the toe box without crushing my toes. I will definitely buy these again!

  • Size Bought: 8. 8.5.

Ok. So after reading the reviews, first I sized a full size up from my street shoes. I'm a 7 street shoe, and so I bought an 8.
They came in and they were way too small.

So then, I buy TWO pairs. an 8.5, and a 9. They both just came in and even the 9 feels like its TOO SMALL. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep them because my big toe feels too crunched..

So buyer beware.. I went up TWO SIZES from my street shoe and they are still cramped.

I think they are children sizes

I was really looking forward to trying these out, but it's like foot binding to get them on. I heeded warning about them running small so I order 1 full size up from my street shoes and 1.5 sizes up from my La Sportiva Nago shoes. And they are STILL way too small. I usually go by the Eur size since that feels truer to me and always get 39 in any shoe. I got the Lyra in a 9/40 (compared to 8/39 street or 7.5/39 La Sportiva) and the size difference is absolutely ridiculous. I don't know what Mad Rock was thinking other than trying to make women feel like ogres..

Great All Day Shoe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

These shoes are great for training in the gym and long days outside. They are similar to the M5, but more narrow. The rubber is super sticky and lasts several months even with multiple climbing days each week. I still haven't blown through the toes in mine, but the rubber has gotten rounded over time. The heels are great for hooking sloping holds and flat surfaces, but aren't narrow enough to hook small edges. Beware of the women's sizing, I am a 5.5 in other Madrock shoes, but needed a 7.5 in these. My street shoe is a women's 7.

M High 5!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 6

This shoe will be similar to the Mad Rock M5, but with a more slender fit. You forefoot and toes will have room to feel the comfort of this shoes, but the build of it keeps you stable and on your game. Enjoy the no-slip design of the heel. Runs true to sizing, with a snug fit. Want a little more comfort, then move up a half to full size from women street shoe.

Great Shoe After Breaking In

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 9

It took a long time to break these shoes in. I wore them around the house for about a week and tried to go climbing with them about 4 times. I had to take them off after just a few problems because they were still way to stiff--hurt my feet and I couldn't get precise footwork with them.

But, now that I've been able to complete 2 full climbing days with them, I can say that they're really growing on me! Now that they're loosened up, they fit great and provide some really awesome friction and comfort.

I did end up getting a full size bigger than my normal shoe size. They were unbearably tight until I broke them in, but now they're perfect.

Super Comfy All Purpose Shoe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I've had a few solid weeks of climbing in these babies and I love them. I have been climbing for close to two years now, mostly indoors and occasionally outdoors, and my previous shoe was the aggressive La Sportiva Muira VS shoes. I was looking for a less aggressive shoe for gym climbing.

I wear street shoe 7 Wide and I got a size 7 in the Lyras. The heel cup is perfect for me (in comparison, VS heel cup was a little loose.) I was worried that these would be tight on me since I have wide feet but they're very comfortable for my toes and width of my foot.

The lining is super soft in the shoe, and it didn't take me very long to break in the shoe at all. I do think the velcro could be a sturdier design--sometimes I have a hard time ripping off the velcro but that's a surface detail.

I love having these in the gym and they've worked fine for me outdoors. They make a fine non-aggressive shoe but if you need a lot of arch support for long climbs, this will leave you wanting for more.

Will buy again when they wear out

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

It is true these run very small, I went up a size and half from my street shoe size which is very unusual for me with climbing shoes. However, once I got the size right I was very happy. I'm impressed with them, can stand on any little nib, flexible yet supportive midsole lets me pull on overhangs. Heel cup is thick and solid, maybe too solid. I like these better than many higher priced options. I use them gym climbing, outdoor sport, and gym bouldering. I would not use these for trad.

So small!

Runs way small! Definitely order a size or size and a half larger than your shoe size. Never had a chance to wear them but they look great.

I read previous review on a different website indicating that these shoes ran small, and to order a size up. I'm usually a 7.5, so I ordered 8.5. When they arrived I was very excited. They looked great!! But the size..oh my! I felt like an ugly sister trying to fit into Cinderella's glass slipper - it just wasn't going to happen!

After seeing them, I think I would probably order a 10 just to be sure.

They look like a great quality shoe, but the sizing is incredibly off and tight (even for a climbing shoe).
