Light on the approach.

One key to feeling your best on the climb is packing as light as possible for the approach, and sometimes the approach is long and the climb consists of double trad racks. Lowe Alpine made the Alpine Ascent 32L Backpack big enough for the double rack, essential climbing equipment, lunch, a hydration reservoir, and even a layer or two. It also has a rope holster at the top and external attachments for ice axes and screws so you can carry bulkier gear outside the pack to save more space inside. The waist belt stows away so you can wear a climbing harness with ease, and there are two more gear loops to add to your climbing rig.

  • Lightweight climbing pack for rock, ice, and alpine pursuits
  • 32L capacity suitable for full days and long approaches
  • Molded back panel with padded shoulder straps
  • Stowable waist belt with gear loops for harness-compatibility
  • Top loading access with holster for climbing ropes
  • HeadLock attachments for ice axes and screws

Adequate for the Job

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought this as an on-route pack. It's adequate on the wall and it is killer as a well-packed crag bag. Perhaps it is a sisyphean task to find a climbing pack that doesn't bonk the back of your head when you lead. That being said, I like the sleek and simple design and the waist belt gear loops is a nice feature.

This is a good on-route pack; if the follower carries it, it's a great on-route pack.

I wrote this review earlier today. This evening, one of the rope holster buckles broke when I tightened it before hiking into the crag. Bummer.
