Across the frozen tundra.

To our knowledge, no one has yet ridden a bike across the poles, but the first person to do it will probably be wearing the Lake MXZ303 Wide Men’s Winter Boots. The boots’ most important feature might also be the simplest: they’re built on an exceptionally wide last, which both accommodates wide feet and provides the possibility of serious layering, all the better to survive those perilous Twin Cities winter commutes and winter bikepacking epics.

The MXZ303 doesn’t rely solely on layering to provide warmth, though. The heel and tongue are lined with Outlast heat-reflective technology, which reflects heat back at the foot instead of letting it escape through the tough Pittards leather upper. There’s also 3M Thinsulate insulation in the toe box and Thermosol in the insole, so your feet are protected from the frigid outdoors from all angles.

The boots are finished with a neoprene cuff that cinches down and wind- and waterproof flaps at the ankle and forefoot to keep Mother Nature’s most punishing incursions at bay. Underneath it all, the rugged Vibram sole provides grip when the drifts get too deep to pedal and protects your cleats from unnecessary damage.

  • Boots extend your cycling season into the cold months
  • Thinsulate protects your toes from the chill
  • Outlast material reflects your body heat
  • Thermosol insole reduces conductive cooling
  • Pittards leather is durable yet flexible
  • Neoprene cuff conforms to seal out slush
  • Vibram rubber provides traction on wet surfaces
  • Wide last allows for layering

Quality shoe but too narrow

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 12

Ordered the wide in a size 12. My normal size is 11 d width. This shoe is tighter than a d width street shoe if you have a wool sock on. The quality is there but not the fit. Also, my toe could touch the end of the shoe even with a size 12. Think it would be warm because it does have thick insulation.

Can I pick this up at your slc location? Thanks

Hey Zack, yes you could, as long as the size you're looking at is in stock in our SLC warehouse! Please chat or call in and we can check on that for you.

Husband is in love

Good gracious I don’t understand cycling gear and their prices, but my husband asked specifically for these and his eyes lit up like a child when he opened them for Christmas!! We recently relocated from the south to the upper Midwest, so he needed more than regular shoes and shoe covers. I think he’s been pretty happy with these!!!

    Worked for me!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Bought these last fall and they worked great all winter! Had to use some heated soles when it got below zero but they held there own nicely. Gearing up for this winter and they'll be my go to boot!

Not properly rated for cold temps

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've been very dissapointed in this boot. I expected a boot that would keep my feet warm. I've tried the thickest of socks with feet warmers on top and bottom and they still don't keep my feet warm. Not worth the money if they don't work. They are very comfortable to wear though and easy to walk in. I'm comfortable and warm in them when temps are in the 30's.

    Wide not wide enough

    LAKE MXZ303 WINTER BOOTS - WIDE - MEN'S

I wear a size 43 wide Sidi road shoe, but the 43 Wide I initially ordered was way to tight. Reordered a 44 Wide, but those too were still to tight. I wanted them to fit comfortably, but they don't; for me. Construction of the boots looked to be top notch, so quality isn't an issue. But they don't fit my feet, and that's to bad. Still looking for a winter cycling shoe/boot that 'fits my feet'.

try northwave they are big, you have to order the size of your dress shoes

    Lake MXZ303

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 39W

I'm a female and wear a size 7.5 sneaker and boot. I ordered a size 39 and it was too tight wear wearing a PhD Smartwool sock. I reordered a size 39 wide and it fits perfectly with a thicker wool sock or the PhD sock. I even ordered the 40 regular to see if I didn't need a wide and the 40 was too big toe to heel. The 39 Wide fits perfectly. These boots feel like slippers they are so comfortable and warm. They do not feel wide or floppy. No need to break them in. I bought them for a fat bike DH race in New Hampshire and the temps never got above 15*. My feet were warm for the first time ever in winter weather! My husband also bought a pair in size 45 and they were also narrow. Exchanged for a 45 wide and he loves them. He is a 10.5 boot/sneaker. I indicated that they are true to size (length wise) but in our case they were just narrow. They are built very well and I would definitely recommend them!

    Comfortable, well made, warm

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small

I've only worn these a few times in dry conditions, with temps in the lower 40s - upper 30s. My feet definitely are warmer than in my regular cleats with shoe covers. The lacing mechanism is well engineered and easy to use. They do run narrow and short. I normally wear a 39 or 40, and have a normal foot width. But I had to order a 41W to get enough toe room. I wear a thin, non-cushioned sock. I'll be trying a little thicker sock as the temps drop. Very comfortable to walk in, too.

    Unanswered Question

Is this model the 2016 ?

    Keeps the feet toasty

I researched a bunch of different boots before buying these and many of the reviews were saying to size up. I believe they fit true to size after they are broken in. If you do size up you get the added toe room for warmth. However, in time the boots will get pressed out and the boa tightening mech will become ineffective at giving the correct amount of support which will cause your heels to slip. Sizing up will add more material and weight as well. I had to slide my cleats a little towards the inside of my feet because the boots are thicker and I was getting slight crank rub. With winter MTB boots there aren't really that many options out there, these keep my feet warm but I might look into getting gaiters for them.

      Keeps the feet toasty

Hey Pete, Are you sizing up from another Lake WIDE shoe? I am on the 45.5 WIDEs in the MX 237s, and I find that the 47 wide in the 303s feels tighter in the width. I'm hoping they stretch to fit as the 237s did, but it seems like "stretch" in these shoes is really just over-compressing insulation - meaning perpetually cold feet where they fit tightly (1-2-combo hit of squished insulation and less circulation!)

Thoughts? I hope it's not just a "too each his own" answer... the arguments you present in the BOA still working seem very valid.

      Thanks,

      Kevin
