La Sportiva Hail Jacket - Men's

Wherever wet weather wanders.

The La Sportiva Men's Hail Jacket weighs next to nothing so you can take waterproof protection trekking, touring, and climbing in faraway places. This 2.5-layer shell uses a thin laminate and fully taped seams to prevent snowflakes and raindrops from seeping through. La Sportiva made the Hail jacket breathable for your most active endeavors, and zippers under each arm offer extra ventilation if you start working up a sweat. When the clouds dissipate, stow the Hail in its packable pocket for compact storage in your backpack. The elasticized hood stays out of sight on belays and ensures a snug fit for maximum protection.

Ok

Not sure it’s going to repel much water, but like this jacket, good fit and weight and will no doubt layer well and pack down small.

    Matches my expectations

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: S

Looks good, fits perfectly, meets my expectations and technical descriptions. It's perfect for any one day activity but can do quit good even during multi day hikes, ski touring, running.

I would like to have additional hand pockets on sides. Pockets are practical for one/multi day hikes, especially in winter at altitudes between 2000-3500 meters. I can keep my base layer gloves in there or even extra food. Though missing pockets aren't a big deal when I take my small running or big hiking backpacks with pockets on the belt.

Thanks for the review! Super helpful to get this feedback out to the community.

Repels mist but not real rain

If you're looking for a lightweight rain jacket that packs well, this is it. If you want it to repel rain for an hour, maybe look elsewhere. Worked ok when walking but last week used it for a multi-day bike ride with three days of rain. Rain was steady but not a downpour. In less than an hour, rain had soaked through the seams. I was getting pretty cold so had to add a windbreaker under it.

    Harness clip failure

I love this jacket. I am disappointed because the carabiner loop on the stuff sack is not reliable. I've had two of these jackets and they both ripped while on my harness and the jacket fell off ! I've had to make a custom loop that's more secure than what came from LS. Kind of a bummer but I like the jacket so much I'm keeping.

I usually wear medium in shells but I have this in a small and it fits great.

    Disappointed in this jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XL

Am not at all happy with this jacket, using it for climbing but also potential emergency jacket in case of rain. Wore it today in intermittent downpour: Within an hour, my sleeves, hood area/head and waistband (seems there is no taped seam here) got soaked. Also, no cinch on hood (I wonder why not?..forces me to wear my helmet...so less helpful on the trail hiking into or out from the climb)..Sourly disappointed in this jacket.

Big Fan of La Sportiva Hail Jacket!

Another great product from La Sportiva. It has been used on several new adventures, repels water, packs super small, if only there were more pockets. Overall, very happy with it.

    Ideal Emergency Jacket

I liked the Scirocco windbreaker Sportiva makes, so I was pretty psyched to see what appeared to be the same design but as a waterproof layer.

And that's pretty much exactly what this is. It does repel water, and I've been hiking/climbing/wandering through pretty heavy tropical storms in it. Zips into a chest pocket down to nothing and fits right into a pack. My only complaint is that there is only the one chest pocket. Why there couldn't be hand pockets lower is beyond me; if it had those this would be pretty much perfect.
