Kelty TN 2 Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Superlight and very compact for minimalist backpackers.

Weighing in at four pounds, the Kelty TN2 Tent has a surprising amount of features to keep even the most minimalist backpackers happy and protected from fall to spring. A stargazing fly rolls up and down quickly in case of a storm, and the tent cube packs the tent down to a minimum for more space in backpacks. The lightweight DAC Pressfit poles snap into the tent's color coded clips quickly, and Jake's Foot makes this tent freestanding.

Kelty constructed the TN2's walls out of no-see-um mesh for ventilation, the floor out of nylon for durability, and the fly out of sil-nylon ripstop to keep the tent as light as possible. Kelty also added PU coatings and taped the seams on the floor and fly for excellent water-resistance as well as abrasion-resistance.

The TN2 also features two oversize doors and two vestibules so backpackers don't have to climb over one another or share a spot for gear. Guyout points help set up the tent quickly, and noiseless zippers offer an undisturbed sleep on a breezy night. The TN2 also has internal storage pockets so everyone can remain organized for the entire trip.

Solid Tent for a Good Price

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Love this little tent! I finally decided to buy a new backpacking tent that is also accessible enough for car camping, and this Kelty did the trick. I've taken it car camping several times, led backpacking trips for the girls I work with, and most recently went on a several day trip in the Ansel Adams Wilderness with it. All those times, it's been solid and easy to put together. I even let some of my Girl Scouts do it, and the color coded corners were really easy for them. It's also super attractive and light enough for me to carry. It's a bit snug, and a taller man might have difficulty fitting in it (I'm 5'9 and sometimes I felt a little cramped) but I think it's up to how you sleep really. Also, it's pretty small for a 2 person tent, really great for one person and a dog but two people do get a little snuggly, which I don't mind. The vestibules are roomy and hold our gear.

Also, I LOVE the rainfly feature. Sleeping with half of it rolled up and looking at the stars was so cozy and great in our last trip, and I like having the other half of the fly still neatly on the tent out for comfort. There's lots of mesh here which is really attractive. Overall, I'm into it! I haven't used it in excessively wet conditions (a drizzly Point Reyes evening was as wet as it's gotten) so I can't speak much to how that is, though I'm not worried.

Great tent, great design

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Roomy for its size. I'm 5'11" and didn't touch head or foot ends on tent. Used it 3 times and once in the rain. Rain fly did its job and no leaks, use all guy-out points. You will need to buy 2 extra tent stakes.

Great tent design, slow kelty repair

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The size is perfect for 2 even better for 1. having the stargazing feature makes it easy to react if it starts to rain. After a few uses one window on the fly de-laminated. I sent the fly in for repair in Feb 2016 and Kelty had it for 6 weeks. Way too long for a factory defect repair in the "off season". They sewed both windows to the fly and seam sealed them. I hope that lasts.

Great views all around

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Everything is color coded so you know which way the poles line up with the tent and rain fly, however I always seem to end up turning the the rain fly around. The rain fly can be put up and down without getting out of the tent is a huge plus if the night all of sudden gets cold or rain comes around and going outside is the last thing you want to do. I do recommend getting a foot print since I've woken up to moisture between the floor/tent/sleeping pad. I've stayed dry inside on three separate trips with rain. As a two person tent it's great if you're comfortable with your companion. I've been able to sleep with a companion and our backpacks inside, albeit with about 12 inches of separation while laying down. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a tent that packs small and is very light weight. I was concerned about privacy with the full mesh walls, but the experience of being immersed in nature with nothing but a bug net between you is amazing. If you want privacy pulling down the rain fly is enough.

So far so good

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Easy to setup and seems to be solid tent... love the cube which fits into my smaller pack! AWESOME

Can you use just the rain fly with the optional footprint for lighter weight camping?

Hi Ada6170799,

My name is Adrian, and I work for Kelty. We did not design this tent with a fast-pack option as you have inquired. The poles connect to the tent via Jake's Feet, which is a ball and socket type of interface. The connectors are on the tent body only, and the footprint clips directly to the Jake's Foot. It's a very clean and secure pole/tent/fly/footprint connection, but does not allow for use without the tent body.

Great tent for a great price!!

Just got my TN 2 in the mail today. Set it up in my family room immediately. It sets up fairly easy and has some really awesome features. It is a lot bigger then I thought it would be. The head space is generous and the interior is very livable!! It seems to breath very well. However I wish it had more internal pockets (a gear loft). But hey minor gripe and it is not worth taking away a star. It comes with a bunch of high quality 3 sided stakes so you dont have worry about breaking them on the first pitch. The guy line seems to be somewhat reflective as well. Overall this is a great tent. I would highly recommend it to anyone!!

Edit: used the tn 2 last night on lake lanier. The weather was perfect so I slept with fly off. Woke up in the middle of the night to clear skies. The stargazer feature is excellent on the tent. It was very comfy to sleep in and the floor seems to be high quality. I can't wait to hit the trail with it soon!!

Great tent for a great price!!

I currently have a North Face 2P tent but...

I currently have a North Face 2P tent but realistically I could never fit two adults in it. Is this tent a true two person tent or would it be better to go with a 3P in order to fit two adults without having to be jammed together?

The TN2 2-Person tent will accommodate 2 people but it is a snug fit. If you are looking for a little more elbow room as well as some room for internal storage, I would recommending sizing up to a 3-person instead.

What is actual weight of full package...

What is actual weight of full package (preferably in grams)? "Packed weight" can be sometimes misleading :(

Best Answer

According to one website I found, they list the avg. min. weight as being ~1927g, or right around 4lb,4oz, and the avg. packed weight as being ~2183g, or right around 4lb, 13oz. Now, to be clear, that does NOT include the footprint from what I can gather, as they mention that specific piece is sold separately, so do not account for that in either of those weights (http://www.backcountryedge.com/kelty-tn-2.aspx). Moreover, Kelty themselves list those weight specs identically, which makes me believe the foregoing site gathered their data from Kelty. Aside from all of that, if you were interested in purchasing the footprint for this tent, Kelty has it (http://www.kelty.com/p-825-tn2-footprint.aspx) priced at $39.99, with a weight of 6.5oz, or ~184g.

Hope this helps.

Going camping MORE b/c of this

LUV this tent - fits into a cube easily, really! Plus the fly is great, easy to put down when needed.
