Get rowdy, but do it safely.
Save some skin when you're getting rowdy on the trail with the Ion K-Lite Knee Pads. Designed for every day riding, the K-Lite pads are lightweight, breathable, and happy to pedal up your favorite trails with their slim profile that fits under shorts with ease, and proven protection, so you're covered when you take a big digger. The K-Lite Knee Pads utilize Ion's 3D shaped fit that is tailored to the asymmetrical, 3-dimensional shapes our knees have. The hardcap in the knee comes from the innovative German company, SAS-TEC, that holds high respect in the motorcycle industry for creating some of the most resilient protection — and with a background in high-speed safety we're comfortable asserting that its designers know a thing or two about how to keep us safe.
A solid knee pad it's got to do more than protect, though, it has to fit well, too, so a lot of thought was put into the comfort of this pad. Ion's designers built the pad with an X-shaped snug-loop strap on the back of the calf that uses sticky-skin neoprene to lock its self onto your calf for no slip when pedaling, silicone grippers at the top and bottom, two adjustable hook-and-loop straps for dialing in the fit, and an open back for letting your knees breathe. The pads are made from lightweight neoprene that lets heat escape while protecting your skin all around.

Top notch protection in a pedal-able pad
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: Large
These pads offer an impressive amount of protection in a lightweight slip-on style pad. The silicone leg grippers and the X-shaped snug loop strap do a good job keeping the pads held in place while pedaling. The pads are fairly low profile which helps keep your shorts from catching on them and bunching up.
There is a soft neoprene material on the inside of the pads. It's most noticeable in the knee cap area where you really feel the neoprene mold around your knee. It's a comfortable design that adds some extra cushion to protect your knee. I had a pretty high speed crash while wearing these pads and in spite of full body bruising, my knees were completely unscathed. Very impressive for a pedal-friendly knee pad.
I do agree with other reviewers about breathability. The back of your knee breathes fine. The neoprene at the front does get a bit hot/sweaty. That is the only downside to these pads is that they are not as breathable as some other slip on designs. Then again these pads are much more than just a lycra sleeve with foam pads sewn on. They are engineered to keep your knees safe while still being able to pedal in them. Sizing is true to size. I historically wear a large in most brands and the Ion large fit well.
Sweaty and tight
These pads seem to be made of good materials and the pad/guard itself is very gentle on the inside against my knee. However, the second I skipped these on my skin began to sweat under the pad and I wasn't even doing anything. They also are difficult to pull on and remove. I felt that the thigh was too tight and the calf too loose, no adjustment straps to fix that on these. I personally think I would prefer a different brand with adjustable straps and different materials. These definitely weren't made for larger thigh people. I can tell these would cause me to have sores from the moisture.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
Overall, these are a great set of trail pads.
Solid protection - SAS-Tech provides great protection for the kneecap.
Fit: The asymmetrical design makes sense, and the pads stay in place without fail
They aren't as breathable as some other lightweight pads, like the Dainese Trail Skins or some of the super light XC style pads. That being said, these offer superior protection for the weight.
