Push Notifications Privacy Policy

Web Push Notifications
Backcountry.com, LLC and its subsidiaries ("we," "us," or "our") offer website visitors the option to receive browser-based push notifications. This section explains what data is collected in connection with this feature, how it is used, and the choices available to you.
How Consent Works
Push notifications are only sent to visitors who have explicitly granted permission through their browser's native permission prompt. No notification data is collected or sent unless you actively click "Allow" (or equivalent) when prompted. You may decline this permission, and doing so will not affect your ability to use the rest of our website.
What Information We Collect
When you subscribe to push notifications, the following information may be collected and stored:
- A unique push subscription token issued by your browser
- Your IP address (used for general geo-targeting of relevant content)
- Approximate location, browser type, device type, and operating system
- Engagement data, such as whether a notification was delivered, viewed, or clicked
- Any additional attributes you provide or that are inferred from your on-site behavior (e.g., pages visited, segments assigned)
This data is not stored using traditional browser cookies. PushEngage stores subscription-related data using your browser's Local Storage and IndexedDB (referenced as "PushEngageSDK" storage), which function similarly to cookies but are technically distinct. If our site uses separate cookies for other purposes (such as analytics or advertising), those are disclosed in our separate Cookie Policy.
We do not collect this data through hidden or pre-checked opt-ins. Consent is obtained solely through the browser's native permission prompt.
How We Use This Information
We use push notification data to:
- Send you updates, offers, alerts, or content you have subscribed to receive
- Measure the performance of our notification campaigns
- Segment and personalize the notifications you receive
- Maintain and clean our subscriber list
Third-Party Service Provider
We use PushEngage, a third-party push notification service, to deliver and manage push notifications on our behalf. PushEngage acts as our data processor and stores subscription tokens, delivery metadata, and related attributes as described above; we remain the data controller responsible for this data. PushEngage engages vetted sub-processors as described in its Data Processing Agreement. You can review PushEngage's current policies here:
- Privacy Policy: https://www.pushengage.com/privacy/
- Data Processing Agreement: https://www.pushengage.com/dpa/
- Cookie Policy: https://www.pushengage.com/cookies/
If you granted permission to receive our push notifications before April 2026, that permission remains stored in your browser for our website. When we changed service providers, your subscription was re-established with PushEngage the next time you visited our site — no new permission prompt was shown because your browser permission was already in place. The nature of the notifications you receive has not changed.
Data Retention
We retain push subscriber data for as long as your subscription remains active. Subscribers who have not engaged with (viewed or clicked) our notifications for an extended period may be periodically removed from our active list as part of routine list maintenance.
Your Rights and Choices
You can manage or withdraw your consent to push notifications at any time by:
- Clicking "unsubscribe" or the notification bell/widget on our website, if available
- Changing the notification permission settings for our site directly in your browser settings
Because the notification permission is stored by your browser, clearing our records alone does not change it. To stop push notifications permanently, revoke the permission for our site in your browser settings; otherwise your subscription may be re-established on a future visit while the service is active on our site.
If you are located in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or other jurisdictions with applicable data protection laws, you may also have the right to access, correct, export, or request deletion of your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@backcountry.com.
International Data Transfers
PushEngage may process and store data on servers located outside your country of residence, including in the United States. Where personal data originates in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, PushEngage relies on its certification under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (and its UK and Swiss extensions), or on Standard Contractual Clauses where the Framework does not apply, to safeguard the transfer.
