In 2010, the UCI lifted the ban on disc brakes in cyclocross races. And while athletes were suddenly imbued with increased speed modulation and stopping power, it was dependent on having the right wheels. Wheel manufacturers were slow to develop the perfect 'cross disc wheel — except for HED. And now that they have been in the game a few years, the Stinger 5 Disc Brake Tubular Wheelset has the perfect ratio of strength, weight, and stiffness. It's capable of taking on any course in any weather and giving you every advantage imaginable.
HED constructed the Stinger 5 Disc Tubular from its own blend of lightweight and durable carbon fiber. HED has even added an extra layer of carbon fiber over the rim to enhance the Stinger's durability over rough terrain. And to compensate for its 50mm depth, HED designed the rims with its SCT Technology. This means that the wheel has been tuned in accordance to handling at its depth. Ultimately, SCT strikes the ideal balance between crosswind handling and aerodynamic gains without compromising the Stinger's weight or naturally rigidity. Additionally, the Stinger features a 28mm-wide rim design that's intended to run a 25mm or larger tire. This wider-is-better technology isn't a bunch of marketing smoke and mirrors, however. It directly results in an 18% reduction to rolling resistance, and a massive gain to laminar airflow over the 50mm rim depth of the wheels. More importantly, for 'cross purposes, the width means more surface area to glue onto, creating a more stable surface for tight cornering and rugged terrain.
Now, HED just didn't take its Stinger 5 and add disc-compatible hubs to it. It reworked the wheel to accommodate the additional stresses of cyclocross racing. The spokes are Sapim's popular and aerodynamic CX-Ray J-Bend spokes with self-securing aluminum nipples. Both wheels use 24 of them. And of course, the Stinger 5 Disc also received new hubs to accommodate rotors. The venerable Carbon Sonic FR Hubs have been redesigned to handle the new variance of torque and stress caused by its centerlock rotor design. The new hubs run on ABEC5 bearings with oversized 12 and 15mm axles. HED spaced the flanges as widely as possible to create a stronger bracing angle that directly results in a heightened level of lateral stiffness. Also new to Stinger 5 Discs, HED added grease ports to both the front and rear hubs for easy service. This is of particular value when you consider the grime and abuse that occurs in cyclocross racing. And with a mind for practicality, the centerlock rotors are removable, so you can utilize the rim braking surface for cantilevers.
The HED Stinger 5 Disc Brake Tubular Road Wheelset is available in a 700c size and in the color Black. They are available with either Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo 11-speed freehub body.
