Lightweight without skimping on protection.

Whether you're hiking Arizona's Mogollon Rim in the summer monsoon or get caught in the Peruvian jungle's daily deluge, quickly unfold The Black Anorak by Haglöfs from your pack and slip it over your head before the heavens open up with booming thunder, whipping winds, and torrential rainfall. This ultra-lightweight shell weighs a scant 5.5 ounces for a size large, which is impressive considering its highly waterproof, breathable construction.

Speaking of construction, Gore-Tex Active with Shakedry Technology ditches a traditional face fabric, which is heavy and prone to wetting out over time. In case you're unaware, wetting out is when a traditional jacket's face fabric loses its ability to bead off water, usually during hours of prolonged rain. Since the face eventually absorbs moisture, it compromises the jacket's ability to breathe, leaving you feeling cold and clammy in a pool of your own sweat. Gore-Tex Active with Shakedry eliminates this discomfort by placing the waterproof, breathable membrane on the outside of the jacket, thereby continuing to bead off water and breathe well, even through hours of non-stop rain and especially humid conditions.

Delving into its ultra-light, minimalist design, you'll find The Black Anorak ditches zippers entirely to reduce weight and make it highly compact, seeing it folds inside the center-front pouch for convenient carrying. Instead of a zipper, it employs a crossing elastic drawstring running along the upper half of the jacket. This drawstring allows you to cinch it up tightly during a rainstorm or gusty weather, complemented with a full-sized hood with lower snaps that work to keep out driving wind and rain.

  • Minimalist shell for hiking, backpacking, running
  • Gore-Tex Active is waterproof, exceptionally breathable
  • Shakedry technology beads off water in prolonged rain
  • Ditches zippers for a crossing drawstring closure
  • Lower snaps along hood to keep out the elements
  • Fully sealed with reinforced overlay tape
  • Jacket stows inside front pouch pocket
  • Elasticized hemline with silicone grip

Not as shiny as you think

Gearhead Brandon Orloski tried on the Haglofs Black Anorak. It's not as shiny as you think. Brandon is about 5'8, 160 lbs, and he has a Medium jacket.

super lightweight emergency rain gear

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Medium

I am a fan of shake dry technology and combined with gore-tex active. It can keep you dry. I plan to use it for hiking.

I was on the edge of small and medium. I went with the medium. The fit may be better as a small for me. I guess I have a short torso because the buttocks are fully covered by the length of the jacket.

Also to note is that there is no ventilation other than the fabric itself and possibly loose cut. There is material behind the elastic drawstring.

Thank you for review, Robert!
