Dialing in your layers.
While we enjoy fall riding, perhaps more than any other time of year, it does often leave us with the dilemma of how to layer effectively for the ever changing weather. Storms roll in and out, and temperatures fluctuate drastically with the moving sun and dancing shadows. A layer often forgotten by cyclists may just be the answer to cycling in the cooler months —the vest. Gore Bike Wear's Element Windstopper Softshell Vest offers the coverage you need to insulate your core on chilly descents, piercing headwinds, and pocket storms that deal day-ending blows to the not-so-water-resistant thermal jersey.
It should come as little surprise that the highlight of this vest is the fabric, as is consistent with all Gore clothing. The material is constructed in 3-layers, with a Gore WindStopper membrane on the outside, shielding your core from wind completely, and creating a barrier from light showers. Underneath, a tough polyester softshell stands up against the abuse of the road, with a lining that wicks away perspiration to keep you dry, while trapping warmth inside to keep you insulated while you fend off the chilly days.
Compared to Gore's Active Shell fabric, the Soft Shell construction is a bit heavier, due to the lining, which is plush and warm, compared to the thin mesh of the Active Shell. This thicker lining provides much more insulation and warmth beyond the Active Shell, so you don't have to worry so much about piling on layers underneath, and can instead enjoy a toasty core from the Soft Shell alone.
The Element Windstopper Softshell has a regular cut, which allows for room for layering underneath, but is still performance oriented, and designed to minimize bulk in the riding position. This cut enables you to dictate the proper layering system based on the day's weather, so you can go minimalist when the temperatures are mild, or pile on the gear when the mercury drops. A high collar brings the element protection up to your neck, sealing out drafts from sneaking in, and elastic hem cuts the breeze from below. The vest has a slight drop tail, keeping your rear end covered, and 2 rear pouch-pockets for easy-access essentials, and a zippered chest for items you want to keep safer, like your ID, phone, and secret gummy bear stash. Reflective details do their best to alert motorists of your presence, so you can stay safer on the road when the lighting gets dim.
