Vanquish MIPS Helmet

Giro's Vanquish MIPS Helmet reaches the zenith of high-performance road cycling helmets. Giro spent countless hours studying the science—and art of mastering—airflow, which dictates the helmet’s shape and vent designs. Months of aerodynamic development, dozens of prototypes, and extensive feedback from pros inform the Vanquish MIPS, Giro's ultimate aero road helmet.

As an evolution on the popular Air Attack, this model features an innovative TransformAir design that actively streamlines airflow. An aerodynamic “cliff” tricks the air by reducing drag and provides the aerodynamic efficiency of a full teardrop helmet in a profile that is more comfortable and versatile in a variety of head angles. Four Polycarbonate Hardbodies make the helmet lighter, more aerodynamically efficient, and durable. No detail went unnoticed and even the helmet straps have been tuned with aerodynamics in mind. Giro’s proprietary Tri-Glides system allows the helmet’s featherweight webbing to lie flat against your face, increasing comfort and reducing aerodynamic drag.

With all of those aero developments, it might be easy to forget proper ventilation, leading to hot heads on climbs and during summer months. But not so on the Vanquish. Wind Tunnel ventilation allows air to flow smoothly across the top of your head to deliver optimum cooling inside the entire helmet without increasing aerodynamic drag. Inside the Vanquish is an EPS liner with a progressive layering of multi-density foam that saves weight and allows the Vanquish to help absorb a wide range of impact energies. The renowned RocLoc Air system seamlessly integrates with MIPS Technology to enhance comfort and cooling power while providing an additional measure of impact diffusion in certain impacts.

All Vanquish helmets include a Vivid shield making the helmet even faster by streamlining airflow. The road-tuned Vivid lens increases contrast and definition to bring road obstacles in stark relief while keeping colors true-to-life. If you choose to forgo the shield and wear shades, integrated eyewear grippers provide easy and secure sunglasses storage should lighting diminish.

This no-compromise helmet is packed full of features designed to improve your ride, from its best-in-class aerodynamic efficiency, exceptional ventilation, and innovative solutions in head protection. This lid will encourage you to get into every breakaway, crush the bike leg of a Tri, or get the most out of your watts for the toss at the line. Regardless of the circumstances, Giro creates the Vanquish MIPS to manage the wind so you can perform at your best.

I was accidentally bumped by another rider while descending a hill at 27 mph. I broke my hand and received lots of road rash during this incident. It was not till the next day that I realized the amount of damage sustained by my helmet. I was alert/aware during the entire crash and it didn't appear my head struck the pavement with such force. I knew there was an impact because my visor broke and was laying in the road with my earbuds after the crash. I'm no doctor but judging from the damage to the helmet, my left eye socket would have been broken and the left side of my head would have tons of road rash to match my shoulder. I may have also sustained a concussion. Other than a few friction marks on my forehead, my head/brain were fine! I'm not able to ride for about 8 weeks but I have already purchased the exact same helmet as a replacement. Short crash video is here: https://youtu.be/rwaTNhnQCOs

Great helmet runs large for me

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love this helmet but it is the only medium helmet I have ever worn that is barely tight enough at maximum tension. The visor is quality and much better than my sunglasses, no complaints otherwise!

Pinnacle of brain buckets

A killer design, light years ahead of others. In a sci-fi analogy, it’s like Giro is doing 3D Avatar in 4K while others are still stuck on Alien in widescreen 1080P. Absolutely nothing beats an integrated visor/helmet solution, for any sport. This engineering philosophy gives the designers “from scratch” trade space to design and build the best of both worlds ... and we consumers hugely benefit. Stunning Visual acuity, MIPS protection, easy maintenance via magnetic clips, and micro fit adjustments and no nose bridge pressure points ... i just listed 5 separate tech marvels in a single product. That is a smoking deal at this price point. It is now the only helmet i use ... road, MTB, and gravel. The only 2 things missing are 1) integrated HUD display (nav routing, cycle data) on the visor, and 2) a Garmin interface to display rear radar view results of pesky drivers. I hope those rockstar engineers are listening!

Thanks for the input! I think the two missing items are not far away. Maybe in the next year or just a bit more.

Buy this brain bucket

For an aero road helmet including TT, this is the best value available at this time.
1. Safety - MIPS (multidirectional impact protection system).
2. Comfort - Ultra cool by way of superb venting design / placement.
3. Opics - Viion shield is crystal clear and very secure by way of the magnet attachment system. Though not Polairzed, the vision shield is vey clear.
3. Very light weight (lighter than most road helmets and aero TT helmets).
1. Price - But hey if you are buying Giro you know you will be paying somewhat for the name. Top market price is justified and mitigated via the "pro" factors mentioned above.
2, Looks (some say). Frankly I think the angular shapes of this helmet resemble those of a stealth fighter jet. But others say it looks nerdy and goofy - probably some truth to that.

RUST! The visor is attached using 5 magnet on the visor and 5 inside the helmet shell. Using it 3 months in dry conditions, the visor magnet rust due to sweat. Worst, the hidden magnet inside the shell rust badly and crack the plastic shell.
Giro mentioned that this is a maintenance issue; but they don’t explain how to dry up the sweat that rust the magnet within the helmet shell!
I previously own a Giro Air Attack who developed the same problem but only after 4 years - 24,000km; not 3 months.
All the good reviews are right for confort, aerodynamic, low wind noise, good vision. This magnet rust issue ruins it all.

Very Pleasant Surprise!

I was looking for an aero road helmet for both road cycling and triathlon. I ordered a few different styles/brands to try, knowing I would be returning all but one. At first, I thought the Vanquish was just "too much helmet" and leaned towards one of the others. But after I took it out for a spin, I was very pleasantly surprised! The helmet was very comfortable, and quiet. In full disclosure, I will keep one of the others, as well, as it has more ventilation for hot days, but I will reach for the Vanquish, often. Thanks Giro and CC for all your help!

Love it

I love the fit. I love the magnetic glasses and how simple it is to push them away.

Comfortable aero helmet with great visor

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I never thought that an aero helmet would make such a difference when riding as this one does, especially on the drops. It's very comfortable for long rides. The MIPS system adjusts nicely to my head size with the twist of a knob so I no longer have sore spots on my head after an hour of riding, and the chinstrap is the most comfortable I have ever worn. The visor is incredible. It is suspended above my nose bridge so my nose doesn't get sore from glasses, and the visor doesn't get foggy in the cold even when I'm breathing into a balaclava. The visor increases the aerodynamics of the whole helmet and the enhanced view of the road is amazing. Although this is an aero TT helmet, it's great as an everyday helmet with no teardrop tail to restrict head mobility. The MIPS system increases safety, which is, of course, why we wear helmets, and you can feel its rotational ability to protect against concussions. I have a large head, often too large for even the largest helmet sizes for some brands, but the L size for this helmet fits fine with some extra room in the MIPS adjustment for wearing a balaclava or thermal skull cap.

A few days ago I got caught in a cold rainstorm, and rode about five miles in the rain. The visor is water-resistant so the raindrops ran off the front, and the visor didn't fog up like glasses do. The vents in the helmet point mostly forward and back, so my head stayed dry. The rest of me got drenched.

Great Aero Helmet

Love the Giro Vanquish w/ MIPS system. Very comfortable , fits well and excellent peripheral vision. Good ventilation, can be use in summer time and cold weather alike.
They do run larger than usual so order one size less.
Thanks to Competitive Cyclist for super quick delivery it was "Christmas time" and excellent customer service.

Sweet helmet!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I would definitely recommend this and buy it again. I'm not a huge fan of most aero helmets but love the looks and functionality of this one. The shield is magnetic and can stow upside down on the front for any time you need to ride with it off. It's comfortable and is good for regular everyday rides as well as races.

Shield works well

  • Fit: True to size

I purchased this helmet to use with sunglasses and it works very well in this manner. I had not used a helmet with a shield before and thought it looked funky. One ride, I decided to put the shield on and what a revelation - the shield works great, a marked improvement over sunglasses for 3 reasons:
1. Visibility is much better, especially looking up at the road from the drops.
2. When wearing a cap under the helmet to cover my ears, there is no need to keep pushing sunglasses back as the normal ear perch is covered.
3. The optics of the shield are excellent, magnifying every detail in the texture of the road.

Aside from the shield, this helmet is very comfortable and includes MIPS, a great plus as most aero road helmets do not.

I can not measure the aero but it is very quiet, usually an indicator of less drag causing air turbulence.

I have a Giro Valegro helmet I use in the very hot Texas summer but I use this helmet for everything else and love it.

The most noticeable thing is the lense not sitting on the bridge of your nose. The lense itself is outstanding in contrast. Think of it as Maui Jim's quality lenses. Airflow is excellent as well but to be honest it hasn't been used in 80 plus degree weather. Yeah it's a bit pricey but I have no regrets.
