Giro Montaro MIPS Helmet
GiroMontaro MIPS Helmet

A no-brainer.

When 5pm hits, break out of the office and head for your favorite stretch of tree-lined singletrack to shed the stress of the day and breathe some fresh air. Whether your plans include hitting the dirt jump course with your ride crew and a few cold ones or you've got fast, rowdy trail riding in mind, wear Giro's Montaro MIPS Helmet to stay cool and comfortable while you ride while knowing your gray matter will be protected when you take a good spill.

The Montaro's biggest feature to get excited about is its use of MIPS technology. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to a thin, flexible inner basket designed to rotate slightly to absorb energy during damaging side impacts. In addition to MIPS, the Montaro has a deep shape with extended coverage along the lower part of the head, and a reliable In-Mold construction to handle more standard bumps and tumbles. If you decide to slack out your frame and head for the lifts, the helmet's P.O.V. Plus visor easily integrates with goggles, and the breakaway camera mount gives you a chance to take footage of your biggest sends. Before you ride, you'll be able to get just the right fit quickly with Giro's Roc Loc Air fit system, which works with the Montaro's 16 vents and plush padding to keep air moving and sweat away from your eyes.

Comfortable Helmet

This is a very comfortable helmet, and the Matte Blue/Lime colorway is awesome! The GoPro mount is a bear to attach to the helmet, but at least I know my camera won't fall off! I like the Roc Loc Air fit system, but the wheel is smaller than I'm used to which makes it a little harder to tighten. Overall this is a great helmet!

    Snug, Comfortable Helmet

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have a 24" head and went with the Large. It fits great. Super snug without squeezing my noggin. It doesn't flop all over the place like helmets I've had in the past. It took maybe 2 mins to get the fit dialed and I haven't touched it since. Really am liking this helmet so far. Happy that I got it!

    Good fit, bad pads

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Helmet fits well, very comfortable. Doesn't interfere with the fit of my Oakley sunglasses. As others have stated, the Velcro liner on the sweat pads is an issue, it began to pull away from the foam after an hour of use. Easy enough to replace or repair, but a very annoying issue on an otherwise great helmet.

    The Perfect Fit

I purchased the women's version for my wife, I was curious about the fit and feel with the MIPS outfitting, so I tried it on and that's all it took, I ordered one. Right out of the box this is the best fitting helmet I have ever owned, the size(M) is just right for my head shape, no strap adjustment necessary.

      Awesome price for MIPS

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
      • Fit: True to size

      Breathable, comfortable, and secure.
I purchased this helmet for my husband for his birthday, and he's digging it big time. The Olive color is an awesome option for someone who likes a more subdued look but is a little bored of black and grey.
The Giro Montaro MIPS helmet, as the name implies, features Giro's MIPS technology to keep your cranium extra safe from blows you might encounter in all directions. The fit is comfortably and true to size, and the vents are well placed to keep you from overheating.

      Feels Good, Gives Me Headaches

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The helmet feels fine but I found it was giving me headaches (i do not normally get). I set the retention system slightly more loose than other helmets I'm used to wearing and it seemed to have solved the issue.

      Like it so far

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size

This helmet has been good for me so far. It fits well, is comfortable, reasonable weight and good ventilation. I really like the blue/lime color that I bought as well. It works well with my sunglasses and sweat bands. In the past I have been either a medium or a large in helmets. In this case I had to size up to the Large. The MIPS shell does take up a few millimeters of room inside the helmet.

My one complaint is that the pads wore out quickly. The liner peeled away from the pads revealing the foam underneath. Minor issue and replacement pads are cheap but it happened after about 2 months of riding. I do sweat a lot, but it still seemed like premature wear.

      Sweet Helmet

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I purchased this as a birthday gift for my boyfriend and he loves it. Unfortunately he has not had a chance to test this out yet due to the snow on the mountain, but should be able to soon. This being said, I only have fit and initial impressions to offer as feedback. Overall he raves about the fit and look. The large ran true to size, really light weight, tons of ventilation for those hot summer days, and while a little bit more in price the MIPS feature is great. He isn't always good about replacing his helmets when needed so I thought this feature is perfect for providing me with peace of mind. The Matte Vermilion ended up being my color choice since orange is his favorite color. It will also offer high visibility as he tends to ride after work throughout the summer. Overall I think this will be a great addition to him biking gear.

      Simple, Solid, Steezy

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This lid gets the triple S review score. It is extremely comfortable fitting with adjustments available if needed. Great lock design that holds the helmet snug even in the most extreme downhill conditions. Took a pretty hard slam the other day and had no noticeable complaints from the helmet in an impact scenario. It also helps that the color variants are pretty stylish. You also get mips protection for a fraction of the price of a smith forefront for example. Great helmet at a great price.

      So safe

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I went over the bars off of a 10 foot drop right onto my head. No concussion, not even a headache. Bottom line, this helmet works. Plus for great ventilation, and good looks.

        Like a glove!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet was a wonderful purchase! I'm very happy with every aspect, aesthetic, build quality, MIPS for extra noggin protection, venting and most of all the amazing comfort. This helmet goes away while riding. Some others have stated its on the heavy side... I literally don't even acknowledge its existence on my head. It cradles the lower back of my head perfectly. I understand all heads are shaped differently, but for me it's huge win!

        This helmet kicks ass!

I ended up taking a spill in my last one, and had no hesitation to come back to the exact same size and color. I absolutely love this helmet. Killer fit, ton's of ventilation, and awesome looks. Don't hesitate and pick one of these up.

        Light and ventilated

This helmet is comfortable even after a 9 hour ride. My helmet (orange) can be spotted from the moon.

          Does the job

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet is super awesome. Very cool and sleek look. I feel safe with the MIPS technology. The fit is a little tight though. I recommend this for anyone.

Given the goggle compatibility and the rear protection, would this helmet be a candidate for skiing or snow boarding? Yeah, I see the million vents, but curious to see if anyone has had the same thought. I usually wear a balaclava, special ops style, anyhow.

          Hey Jon,

This helmet isn't certified for snowsports so I wouldn't really recommend it. I'll reach out and we can chat about what you're looking for in a helmet.

          Super Solid

Perfect fit. I take of the visor when I ride road and put it back on for mtb. The bolts that hold on the visor will come lose after awhile, so make sure to re-tighten them occasionally. One of mine fell out and Giro was quick to send me free replacement bolts.

A littler tighter fit with mips

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times
          • Fit: True to size
          • Size Bought: Small

A great helmet but with the Mips it fits a slightly narrower than there non Mips helmets.

          Looks good

Lightweight, super chill, enduro helmet. Visor slides back nicely to fit goggles if that's your deal. Light and fashionable.

            Best in a long time

            • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've had the Montaro for pretty much the entire season and it's definitely the best helmet I've had in awhile. It fits well, the visor is very secure, and I never think about it while I'm riding. The only issue I've had is some wear on the fit pads.
