Solid skins that won't break the bank.

Whether you're new to backcountry touring or just want a set of skins that are solid and simple, the G3 Expedition Climbing Skins will please you with their simple and effective design that gets the job done without too many unnecessary bells and whistles. Their large tip loop attachment offers a solid connection that won't slip and slide on you, while their rock-solid tail clip makes for a bomber connection between skin and ski. Like most of G3's skins, the Expeditions are made with a plush synthetic material that glides efficiently and bites when you need it to. A new feature for this season is the RipStrip, which runs down the middle of the adhesive side of the skin, making it easier to pull the skins apart during transitions.

    Grip needs improvement

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Held up to multiple changes in the field with zero problems! Got them in a 110 for a 109 waisted ski (Black Crows Corvus Freebird 183) --so i went for the "vertical" cut rather than the edge-to-edge fit which shaved off some (in my opinion) un-needed material. Are there grippier and lighter skins? sure but these did an excellent job on 4000 vert for me yesterday with multiple changeovers in cold, snowy, and windy conditions.

UPDATE: Took these out for another tour, slightly warmer temps. Variable snow but still saw no reason for the issues I experienced. Felt like I was constantly fighting the dreaded skin-slide backwards with these if I was following anyone in my party on freshly broken trail. Will be returning these for a grippier skin, not worth it.

Do these skins come with a trimming tool?

    Good Skin

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Maybe not the lightest or fanciest skins out there, but they get the job done. Good traction, tolerable glide, and certainly not light or compact but they fit in my pack fine so don't really care.

If you have a super fat/square tip ski though I would recommend the alpinist for sure. The tip clips on those are incredible for any ski shape. The clip on these works fine with my Line Sakanas though.

    No Slip Grip

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    These are some sticky skins!
The skis were easy to shape, and super great right out of the bag. They are medium weight, and stick very well while climbing. They almost stick too well, were they do not glide as well as other skin types. I love them though, i feel very safe and stable while i am climbing up mountains.
The clip at the back is super secure and very intuitive to use. Be careful to have the tips all the way down before you clip though, i almost damaged my ski!
I would recommend this for any person who need extra grip while climbing.

    Good skins

Good skins for touring, however beware of the tail clip in deep snow as it is not as secure as butterfly tail clips.

    skin

Good quality. Easy to cut and fit and work great, skin savers a great idea to have with them to make the adhesive last a little longer.

    good skin, good price

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Not the lightest, not the "grippiest", but a great skin that won't leave you cursing on your way back to the trailhead. Simple tip connection and tried and true tail clip. For the price, I love these, and have a couple pairs. Only complaint I have is that the tail clip can get knocked off a bit too easy when you hit it with the other ski, but I suppose you shouldn't be knockin' skis, so...

Thanks for the review Peter! Be careful about knockin' skis on the skin track!

    Gets the job done

      They work great for me.

Less bulk but slightly less traction.

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My last pair of skins were the G3 Alpinists on a pair of 176 Voile v8 skis. I use these with a pair of 183 Voile v6 and have noticed slightly less traction and kind of miss the universal tip of the Alpinist. However, these skins are a lot less bulky than the Alpinist that I really appreciate for jamming more snacks in my bag during a long day in the backcountry.

      Unanswered Question

Will these skins fit a salomon rocker 2 122 tip? The tip is so round that i think the alpinist tip attatchment Would be better.

Okay but not as nice as BD Ascension

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Better glide, but otherwise poorer grip, gloppier glue, and annoying tail clips. Durability seems good

      Light and Durable

I have used these skins on several tours now. They are light weight. They stick to the base well even after several transitions while storm skiing. The skins glide smoothly on the flats and provide great traction on the climbs. Set up was a breeze. G3 provides skin trimmer to cut the skins to appropriate width.

Will these fit a 184 cm ski? I have only ever used alpinist skins never a tip loop

        Hey Rgcblunt,

These will fit a ski that is 184cm in length. If the ski has a straight tail, and actually measures 184cm you could use the medium. If the ski has rocker in the tip and tail, or measures more than 184cm from tip to tail I would recommend the long length.

        WORST glue EVER!!!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

So I stored the skins in a cool dry place for the summer with a skin saver between them, the same way i have treated my Black Diamond skins for a decade... then I went to use these skins for the first time and the glue was a NASTY mess. Super sticky to the touch. Nasty sticky glue came off on EVERYTHING it touched, hands, pants, jacket, gloves, AND all over my board (which made it so it did not slide! I had to use wax remover and rewax the board!). This exact same thing happened to my girlfriend and my best friend. They both bought their skins new from Backcountry, so they got a warranty (still a pain in the butt), but since I bought mine from eBay (like new!) I attempted to "renew" them with an iron and paper bag. This did nothing, so I spent 4 hours with an iron and brown paper bags removing the G3 glue then applying Black Diamond Gold Label glue ($50). MAJOR pain in the butt, but at least I now have awesome BD glue on my skins.

What made me finally write a bad review is I just went to use the skin saver/ cheat sheet that came with the skins and they were covered in nasty sticky glue that got all over me. I just spent 30 minutes with an iron and newspaper removing the excess glue from the darned skins savers!

Worst Skin glue EVER. Whatever you do, don't buy G3 skins! Get the Voile!!!

Having said all that, the G3 skin trimming tool is pure genius. Props there.

        SAME!!

        No complaints here

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are the only climbing skins I've owned, and I've only used one other variety (some BD skins), so take this review with a grain of salt. However, I have been pleased with the glide they provide and have had no issues with them. The provided tool for trimming them down to size is a little tough to use, but there are many other ways to accomplish trimming. These are hardly the lightest or fastest skins out there, but they have been quite reliable for my use.

        How to Measure:
You can get maximum skin coverage by choosing a skin that is slightly narrower than the widest part of your ski, and trimming the skin to the sidecut / shape of your ski, as described in the skin instructions. The extra work required to trim will more than make up for itself with the superior grip of a skin with "wall to wall" coverage. Choose a skin that covers your ski base "wall to wall" (edge to edge) about 25cm (10in) back from the ski tip. For example, if the dimensions of your skis are 115-77-105, a pair of 110mm skins will do nicely.
