How did the Frye Company become a storied American fashion brand? When you’re the oldest continually operating footwear brand in the United States, it comes with territory and it comes with hard work. Frye was founded in 1863 by John A. Frye to provide sturdy, serviceable shoes for factory workers in and around the town of Marlborough, Massachusetts. When homesteading sparked adventurous New England families to head west in the 1800s to seek their fortunes, many of those pioneers wore Frye boots along the journey. <br><br>Footprints of Frye boots can be found throughout American history, on the feet of anyone from cowboys and settlers in the West to cavalry soldiers in the Spanish-American War. Through the end of World War II, Frye supplied its Wellington-style boot to thousands of soldiers and pilots. Postwar, its cavalry-inspired Harness boot—featuring a squared-off toe and leather straps with rings on either side—become a favorite of rockers and bikers. In the late ‘60s, Frye introduced another American classic, the Campus boot, which was inspired by some of Frye’s earliest boot designs. It rapidly became an indispensable part of the wardrobe of the youth of that generation, so much so, in fact, that the Frye Company donated a pair of Campus boots to the Smithsonian Institution in 1975 as a representation of the era. <br><br>As it wound its way through the collection U.S. history, Frye footwear became valued for its inimitable style and uncompromising quality. It takes more than 190 steps to craft one pair Frye boots, and a similar set of processes to make its shoes and accessories. Along with this heritage of fine craftsmanship and painstaking attention to detail, this process uses only the high-quality leather, tanned with natural oils.<br><br>Today, in addition to its iconic boot designs, Frye offers a wide range of footwear and accessories for men, women, and kids, known of course as “Small Frye.” Women’s footwear ranges from head-turning over-the-knee boots to strappy sandals, while men can choose anything from rugged work-style boots and vintage hikers to dressy wingtips and casual boat shoes.
