From the sea-sprayed coast of Washington to the rocky beaches of Maine, the Fjallraven High Coast 18 Backpack delivers the same rugged performance and iconic look as Fjallraven's line of hardy, G-1000 pants. Designed with a slick silhouette, the High Coast boasts a generous main compartment that easily seals shut thanks to the drawcord and steel hook closure. Additionally, the pack is outfitted with side, internal, and external zippered pockets, while the front external pocket doubles as a stuff sack for the bag itself. Not to mention, the lightly padded shoulder straps provide trek-long comfort and the frame sheet, chest, and waist strap are each removable.

Good commuter bag

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Super light and good for every day use

A great small daypack for most uses

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The High Coast is an excellent small, daily use daypack. Despite being super lightweight it can carry a surprising amount of stuff while remaining comfortable. When not stuffed it's really low profile and unassuming, but it can expand if needed. It also looks great - so much better than other packable and similarly priced daypacks from Herschel, REI, Patagonia, or the like - and is suitable for wide variety of situations. I've used it for traveling, short hikes, errands, farmers market days, and day trips; it's performed admirably in all situations.

I regularly carry a layer, snacks/lunch, an iPad, a 500-750ml water bottle (depending on shape), and a camera while having plenty of space for other stuff (or whatever my toddler wants me to carry). The drawstring + hook enclosure makes it reasonably secure while it's on your back, and the interior pocket is great for stashing important items, like a passport.

The G-1000 material is also quite water resistant while remaining soft. I was out in the snow with it for 5 hours one day and everything remained dry inside.

Problems? The water bottle pockets won't hold a large bottle, and there's not a divider for a hydration bladder, so it wouldn't really work for an all day hike (unless someone else is carrying your water). It's the same problem as the Kanken - Fjallraven needs to learn to add elastic to their water bottle pockets.

Quick access isn't a strength for bags of this kind, either. They're bottomless caverns. Not much you can do about that, other than get a different kind of bag.

Overall, I highly recommend the High Coast. At the price, it's really difficult to beat.
