In introducing Fi'zi:k's Superlight Classic Touch Bar Tape, allow us to wander down memory lane a bit. When we were impressionable young cyclists travelling abroad, we happened to notice a magazine clipping on the wall of a European mechanic's shop. It showed a 1970s-era pro (who shall remain anonymous) climbing through one of l'Alpe's switchbacks.
The mechanic had circled the cyclist's bars just behind the shifters because a triangle of metal was showing through where the team wrench had gotten sloppy and not properly wrapped the tape. Next to the circle was a handwritten expletive that served to communicate in no uncertain terms the mechanic's lack of enthusiasm for this tape job. We won't relate it here.
The moral of the above anecdote is: A well-wrapped bar is a thing of beauty, but shoddy wrap jobs will earn you the scorn of crotchety wrenches and salty crit dogs alike. Whether you're a seasoned taping pro or a neophyte with a cold beer and 20 minutes of spare time on a Sunday afternoon, a well-applied wrap of Fi'zi:k's Superlight Classic tape will not only add a fresh pop to your machine, but it will also improve bar feel and help maintain grip during sweaty climbs. The tape's Microtex composition resists ripping, tearing, and wear better than old-school cork tape, too. Do yourself a favor by not incurring the wrath of cycling's greatest generation. Get new tape and apply it right.
