Besides an unexpected crash, nothing quite kills the fun during a ride more than a flat tire or some other wheel mechanical. Its critical to keep air in the tires and your rim intact while racing and sure makes riding more fun as well, so that's why ENVE has been working hard developing a carbon rim that won't flinch when getting sent, without compromising your ride with unnecessarily high tire pressure, extra heavy duty tire casings, or cumbersome and heavy tire inserts to reduce pinch-flats. With the M735 Industry Nine Torch 29in Boost Wheelset, you get an EWS level set of hoops that will let you charge with the safety and security you've come to expect from the carbon experts.
The M735 takes inspiration from its predecessor, the M70, but has been redesigned to mate better with modern tires, so that they can support wider tires and withstand harder riding. Harder riding often involves heading into dusty corners at higher speeds, and nothing can spook you faster than an unexpected drift from running your tire's a bit too firm, so ENVE's designers took special care to develop a rim that can be run at lower tire pressures and allow for a better contact patch to the trail, keeping you connected even when the terrain is loose. Enabling these lower pressures, along with the reshaped rim, is ENVE's Protective Rim Strip that provides extended durability without the weight of a rim insert. The Protective Rim Strip improves impact resistance so when you bottom out a tire on a drop to flat and ride away with air in the tires and a round hoop.
Like its predecessor, the M735 uses downhill-specific carbon laminates that come from the M90 line to give aggressive riders the confidence they need for dare-devil downhill stints, with the option to climb efficiently when your shuttle takes off for the day or the chairlifts close. The girthy rim-width of the M735 helps to increase this contact patch, with an inner rim width of 35mm that begs for a bigger tire, from the 2.5-inch wide-trail all the way up to a 2.8-inch plus tire. When combining the extra girth along with the redesigned, more robust rim design you to end up with a heavier wheel than the M70, coming in 128-grams heavier than its predecessor, but we're willing to forgive a little extra weight for a rim that can stand up to our gravity-hungry appetites.
ENVE's designers utilize its patented technology to create tough, stable wheels for all riding condition. Using a unique process of molding nipple seats and valve stem holes, it helps ENVE earn the reputation for incredible strength-to-weight ratios. ENVE's carbon fiber is meticulously laid around each hole to maintain a continuous fiber, maintaining continuous fiber integrity, resulting in increased rim rigidity while keeping weight lower at the spoke face. When you lace this system up to a hub the result is a system that facilitates more uniform, and higher spoke tension than standard molding. In addition to their meticulous layup, ENVE uses a process that removes the inner bladder from the carbon fiber bolding, which results in lower weight compared to other composite manufacturers who leave the rim-molding inner bladder inside the rim when the wheel is complete. The tedious process of removing the bladder adds expense but lands you with a lighter rim with superior weight distribution and better balance.
Of course when we think of ENVE wheels our focus is on the rims, but it's worth thinking about the hubs they're laced up to, and ENVE trusts these hoops with Industry Nine's Torch hubs. The Asheville, NC firm uses precision engineering and machining to create lightweight, fast engaging, and beautiful hubs. This model uses boost spacing for stiffer tracking up front and more responsiveness in the back. The hubs and rims come together in Utah, where they are laced up to create an impeccable wheel with the longevity you expect from a class-leading wheel system.
