For the versatile explorer.

Deuter made the Women's ACT Trail 22 SL Backpack versatile so you can ski, climb, and hike with the same pack. Its AirContact Trail SL suspension system features a women-specific design, stabilizer straps, a flexible frame, ventilated channels, and breathable 3D AirMesh padding at the shoulder straps, waist belt, and back panel.

There are two access points to the ACT Trail's main compartment, one at the top for packing and another at the front for getting gear quickly. Deuter also added a sleeve for your hydration reservoir, a compartment for dirty clothes, and a rain cover that you can remove for sunny days. There are multiple pockets inside for organization as well, one on the side for a water bottle, and another zippered side for security. The loop at the bottom stores ice axes, trekking poles, or a helmet―whatever your adventure calls for.

Really like the color selection on this bag

Versatile Day Pack!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love this bag. Have used it on several day hikes and many short weekend trips as a carry on. It is a great size and is very comfortable to wear. (5'4", 130, avg torso). Also use the Source Streamer Water Reservoir with this bag. Outer pocket and elastic loop also work great for a traditional water bottle. The zip front on the bag makes it easy to access things at the bottom. Bottom pocket is great for items you don't use frequently like the raincover and small safety supplies. Lots of straps to adjust depending on how full you want to pack it. As one other reviewer mentioned, I do wish it had a small pocket on a strap for easy access to stow your phone, etc, without taking the bag off, but that is the only thing I would change about this! I would totally buy this again.

Good pack for Short people only

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Backcountry sent me this pack and asked me to review it. This is a beautifully made, full featured pack, with several clever touches, and its price is low for the value. However, it did not fit me (I’m 5’6”, 125 lbs, 18” torso length), and it barely fit a friend who is 4” shorter. The problem is that if I position the hip belt across my hip bone, as is needed for maximum comfort and efficiency, the shoulder straps need to be loosened significantly, resulting in a pack that sits low on my back and with load-stabilizer straps that tilt uphill, instead of being level or sloping down. It fit my friend a bit better (see photo), but the stabilizers were still almost useless. The reality is that when the pack bag is small, the distance between the belt and the top of the shoulder straps will be correspondingly short. In sum, belt, shoulder straps and stabilizers will work as intended only when the wearer’s torso length is also short. Taller folks should look for day packs without a hip belt.

So, if you’re a short woman, is this the pack for you? Kudos for nice touches such as fabric “keepers” for compression straps, attachment points for ice axe/trekking poles, daisy chains on either side and more attachment points for a jacket or even a rolled sleeping pad, stiff spreaders in the zipper pulls that make it a cinch to find and pull the zipper, zippered compartments on each side of the hip belt (no phone, but lip balm and a bar will fit), and a key/wallet/phone compartment that’s accessible from the top outside, yet keeps your goodies safe inside the pack. One major ding: the port for your hydration hose is a small, vertical slit that will not accommodate either end of an MSR hose (old-style Camelbak hoses will work, as they have a straight 180 degree coupling at the bag end).

Hey Janet,

Appreciate the review! I'm curious if it might work for me. I'm pretty short. Thanks for taking your time to really inspect this pack!

Quality and Comfort

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a great pack. I purchased this backpack mainly because i was impressed with the cushion it has on the shoulder straps. I have used it and continue to use for my day to day activities. It can carry everything you require for your day and remains very compacted.
I also own the Deuter ACT 24 L standard because that one matches my torso size, I just hiked 110 miles in England with it, . Therefore, i am now extremely familiar with the Deuter brand and would not change it for any other one. Super comfortable, versatile, beautiful colors and definitely looks very durable.

Rainbow Falls in Stehekin

This backpack accommodated all I required for a day trip - extra shoes, jacket, water, book and small handbag.

The 22L was perfect for my 5'6" slender frame.

It required a simple strap adjustment and I rode a horse 1000 feet up over rocky terrain for 4+ hours without any shoulder issues.

This is the most comfortable of all the backpacks I own.

I plan to use it snowshoeing come Winter.

Great daypack!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I ordered this backpack after trying it on along with a few others at a local store. It fit my frame much better than the comparable Osprey pack (I'm 5'8", 145 lbs) and is perfect as a smaller pack for day hikes. It is definitely on the small side and I wish it had a pocket on the waist strap-but as long as you're ok with that its a great pack!
