shoe protection

We generally love Crankbrothers pedals for their light weight and bulletproof entry and exit in mucky conditions but the retention bars that are so key to their wonderful functionality unfortunately sometimes have a tendency to dig into the soles of our favorite (and expensive) shoes.

Crankbrothers Shoe Shields are essentially just that: stainless steel plates that are added in between the cleat and shoe to protect the soles from damage. The precision cut guarantees a fit that is far better than what you can do with tin snips and a beer can on even your best day and clever cutouts still allow the cleats to dig into the shoe as usual to prevent unwanted twist.

Crankbrothers Shoe Shields are thick enough to hold up well over time yet thin enough that they add virtually no stack height to mess with platform stability and use standard-length hardware. The slick finish even makes for smoother rotational float, too. Your shoes will thank you.

They do the work

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These shields get its work done as your shoe will have the extra protection they are meant to. And also add an extra height that help clipping in on some MTB shoes as they usually include some extra heigh one the sides

Work Great

No issues, if you are using cleats with carbon soled shoes you need these.

    Carbon shoes? You need this

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I didn't put this on my Shimano XC-9 shoes to begin with. After just a couple of uses i noticed the carbon sole was wearing out! This immediately fixed my problem.

Work great for protecting your shoes

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Crank Brothers shoe shields are a critical piece of equipment if you run egg beaters. I would give this product five stars as they do exactly what they should in protecting the sole of your shoe, however I am docking Crank Brothers one star as these should really be included in the pedal purchase. Overall a great product that is a must have if you are running egg beaters.

Work great with Crank Bros cleats.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

They do their job admirably in raising up your Crank Bros cleats, so you can easily clip in and out without your shoe sole getting in the way. Much more durable than the plastic shims that come with Crank Bros pedals.

    Carbon Sole Savers

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I actually use these under my Time cleats. The spring bars will eventually wear away carbon soles if you don't have these in place. Pretty cheap insurance an I replace these every time I change my cleats.

    Got carbon shoes?

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These shims are great if you have a carbon sole that the cleat is going to interface with, as it helps prevent the actual cleat from digging in to the carbon and ruining/damaging the sole of the shoe.
I picked up a new pair of Sidi Drako shoes, and they have a rubber area where the cleat attaches that doesn't require this shim, but now I have an extra set just in case.

    Carbon Sole Necessity

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

If you ride Crank Bros. Candy/Egg Beater pedals you will need these shields for your carbon or high end shoe. These shields will allow the float of the shoe/pedal interface without gouging your expensive kicks and creating a wear groove in the outer sole.

Needed for egg beater type pedals

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

If u use crank bros and have carbon sole shoes, you want to use these. Easy to install and work as advertised. They should come with their pedals those vs those plastic guards that dont work. Come on crank bros... Just charge 3.00 more for your pedals and incluse these...

    without these...

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I once ran just the plastic inserts that come with the pedals and the pedal spring warped the plastic, leaving the pedal making direct contact with my carbon soled shoe. Over time, the spring sawed through my shoe! Ever since I've run a set of these aluminum shields (using the same set for years) and never have had an issue since.

    Protect your shoes

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Another great piece from the Crankbros. Light, simple and all function.

    Lives up to name

Not only do these save the soft plastic that usually surrounds the mounting area, but with bigger caged pedals, it will also help save your rubber sole and permit the pedal to release the way it was intended. Kind of a no-brainer.

      A must for most shoes

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

For carbon shoes you absolutely have to have these, for CB, Look, and Time pedals (any style of pedal with narrow contact bars). I actually don't own any carbon shoes, but I still use these on all my shoes for two reasons:

      1) Protect the shoe sole from wear due to a small contact point

      2) Preserve free float

The second point is important to me; with the shoe shields the float is much freer on CB pedals than otherwise, as the wings can move smoothly on the steel plate and not rub on the sole (especially as grooves rub into the soul and restrict the float more). There really is a noticeable pedal difference and as I use CB for their free feel, having these to preserve that is important.

I give them 3/5 for two reasons: first, they do actually wear out (I pretty much replace them whenever I replace my cleats, about once a year or 4000 dirt miles), and second, these should be included with cleats or pedals because I really think they ought to be used with CB pedals for all shoes. They're cheap enough that it's not that big an issue, but I'd still like to see them bundled instead of those useless plastic shims CB puts in there now.

Carbon shoes? Shields are a must.

If you run carbon soled shoes and Crank Bros pedals, these nifty shields are a must for protecting your investment and preventing your pedals from wearing a groove in the sole. They are super slim, simple to install and totally worth it.

I've got 1,000s of dirt miles on Eggbeaters. No issue with anything failing. Sounds like you just had some bad luck.
