Why We Like The Continental Grand Prix 5000 Tire
The all-new Grand Prix 5000 Tire from Continental is a worthy successor to its Grand Prix 4000 S II, standing at the top of the Continental road clincher range. The Black Chili compound uses the latest polymers and synthetic rubbers along with a proven natural rubber for a high-performance blend that's truly race-worthy. It gives the tire greater ability to conform to imperfections in the road surface for excellent grip in demanding situations, which we appreciate for high-speed cornering.

28 IS WHAT YOU WANT!!!!!
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Weight:
- null
The pairs of 25's I ran for over 10 yrs did very well: fast, ran at 90psi, not that comfortable, good durablity, when worn out did flat more, cuts did happen from glass, nails etc on the side of the road, but main problem was getting the last 6" over the rim, so very depressing when having a flat, especially trying to get under the tire bead to pry the tire off then having to use a tire bead jack getting it back on- often resulting in pinching the new tube!! Enter the 28. It's just as fast, 50% more comfortable. I'm 200lbs and run at 85psi. The 28 is 75% easier to get the tire on, 50% easier in getting the bead out to remove the tube, then again 75% easier getting the tire back on usually just by hand so eliminating the chances of pinching!! I have had the same results on getting it on my Astral aluminum and Astral carbon rim. I've had them over 2,000 miles and the first week got a pinch flat from something near the side of a city street, but no problems since on city or rural roads.

Sidewall blowout
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
- Weight:

Like a few other reviewers have mentioned, these tires have problems. I too had a sidewall blowout on a smooth road, and I just put them on a few weeks ago. On the other tire I had a couple pinch flats since it was so difficult to mount. I won't be buying these again.

Have not had better- but hard to mount

good puncture resistance, grip and excellent rolling resistance. They can be very hard to fit on some wheels. Took forever to get on a set of HEDS. If either bead is not pinched together in the center of the rim all the way around the wheel, you won't get them on. other wheels I have are nowhere as hard. Be careful if your frame's tire clearance not generous. With modern wide rims these will be a couple mm wider than their size.

Was a good tire...
Ran the 4000 series for years with no issues and great ride. Switched to the 5000 series and had similar results until the last few purchases. I must have gotten a bad batch because the side walls split allowing the tube to pinch through. The last tire was only on my trainer for a couple hundred miles before experiencing the same failure. You can actually see the fibers pulling apart. I really liked these tires and only experienced one flat over several thousand miles. But after experiencing 3 sidewall blowouts in a row due to tire failure, I will be switching brands.

Nothing but good things to say

I've had zero problems with these tires and I've had them on the bike for about 18 months. Not sure of the mileage because I have a lot of Zwift thrown in, but they likely have around 5-6,000 miles on them. I haven't had any flats with these. However, one of my valve stems broke (my fault), so I did have the chance to change the tube once. I discovered it right as our club was rolling out for a ride, and changing the tube was so quick that I was able to catch the pack. I do run the 28's, so maybe that's why I've had a better experience than other reviewers.

Better than 4000's but they run narrow.

I've been riding Continental 4000's for many years. I have some miles on the new ones and they are an improvement over the 4000 S II's. The main improvement I have noticed is they are slightly less prone to getting small cuts from glass shards. The main caveat to be aware of is they are definitely narrower than the 4000's. I always used 25's before so I ordered the 5000's in the same size. As soon as I installed one I could see it was narrower. I then got some in the 28 size and mounted those. The 28's in the 5000's are the same width as the old 4000's in a 25. Still overall a great tire as far as wear, grip and puncture resistance. They will be slightly tight to install when new but after you ride them for a bit they loosen up a bit.

They might be great once you figure out how to get them on your wheel but they are so tight it is almost impossible with two people trying to get them on. Good luck if you are riding alone and you flat, you will be stuck.

Once they are on, they are a great tire. The fit is very tight, but not impossible to get on. I loved the 4000 Conti's and these are a worthy successor.

My go to road tires

On my 3rd set. Replace every Spring and get an entire year out of them putting in around 5500-ish miles per year. I have just had zero problems or complaints with them. As long as they keep making them, I'll keep buying.
