Catlike Tako Helmet

Catlike tech for the trail.

Catlike rarely ventures outside the world of road cycling. When it does, you know the product is going to be something special. The Tako helmet brings Catlike’s extensive helmet experience to singletrack and, in doing so, creates a helmet as beautiful as it is functional.

The Tako uses Catlike’s Crash Energy Splitter technology. The design incorporates multiple ribs that run across the helmet to form energy-absorbing crumple zones. The Tako features 23 air intakes that keep your head cool and a wheel retention system that provides an infinite level of retention adjustment. The retention wheel can also be adjusted with one hand, so it’s easy to dial your fit mid-ride.

Wish It Had Worked Out

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Bought this helmet having heard good things about it from some other riders. The helmet is light and seems that it would do the job, but the sizing was funky and the adjustment system felt a bit cheap. In fact, I had to return the helmet because the adjustment system stopped working entirely––it's possible I just got a defective unit, but because protecting your head is not something you want to skimp on, I decided to just drop the extra money and get the Giro Savant with MIPS. It's definitely more expensive, but it feels leagues better, both in construction and fit, right out of the box.

Great purchase!

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

I have now had this helmet for more than a year. I used the size guide and it fits perfectly, especially with the very easy and effective retention system. I am now a huge fan of Catlike and Competitive Cyclist!

Runs large, excellent otherwise

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My head measures 58 cm. The large was quite a bit larger than I expected, with ~1.5cm of empty space on each side of my head, and it was still loose even with the adjustment mech in the back tightened all the way. Exchanged it for a medium, which fits me perfectly.

Sizing issues aside, I have no complaints. Looks good, hardware is well-done, bug screen is kinda neat, visor hole plugs are nice.

Ditto

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

As Scott Pendleton put this is an awesome helmet for the price point. I agree with everything the review says below and use it as my primary mountain helmet also. The only thing I have to add is the helmet fit is big. I wear a 7 1/8" hat and I just barely fit into the medium for this this helmet with nit adjusted as small as it goes. Also it looks really cool!

Incredible value

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm not understanding why this helmet is at this price point, it's light (my L is 303g), it has good coverage, good venting in hot humid conditions, is extremely comfortable, I really can find no fault. I use it as my primary MTB helmet despite its "commuter" branding. I have other helmets that cost 50% more that have poorer coverage and venting and are heavier. This helmet really is a steal.

The only thing close to a complaint would be the visor is a little shorter than I would like, but it still keeps sun and water out of my face and stays out of my vision so I suppose it works fine.

Nice review, Scott!

How is the fit on this thing?

My noggin' measures in at 59.5 cm and the L helmet sits comfortable over top of a Buff headband with plenty of adjustability either direction. I have a more of an elongated oval-head and I think this may be for more round shapes, as it cinches up front and back before the sides, but it stays put without having to crank it down uncomfortable tight.

Also, the back ratchet goes low enough for me to fit my ponytail above it but below the helmet body, which is a plus. I'd rate the helmet as ponytail-friendly.

Good Helmet

This is a great helmet for the price point. It is comfortable and vents well. I got a medium and it is comparable to a Giro size Medium. The guts of the helmet seem minimal, but I haven't yet decided if it's a good or a bad thing yet. I only give it 4 stars because I'm used to a sleek Giro Atmos and this one looks a little funny on my head.
