It’s all in the name.

Castelli’s Free Aero Race Bib Shorts hide their assets in their name. Namely, free speed, aerodynamics, and race-oriented. The Free Aeros utilize a variety of surface textures, fabrics, and time in the wind tunnel to deliver a claimed 10-watt savings at 50kph. This may not seem like much, but those savings add up over even a two or three hour ride, and could mean the difference between enough power for a sprint and pedaling lamely to the line.

At the core of the shorts sits Castelli’s Progetto X2 Air chamois, with one minor-but-crucial improvement —a softer face fabric. You get all the support and chafing resistance you expect from the Progetto, but it’s a bit kinder to your skin now. We’d be remiss to not mention the lightness of all of the fabrics in the Free Aero Race, in part because they’re comfortable and airy on even the hottest days, but also because you’re going to want to apply a bit of sunscreen at the leg bands.

  • Racing bibs for the discerning cyclist
  • Aerodynamic features for a claimed savings of 10 watts
  • Gently compressive material reduces long-mile fatigue
  • Lie-flat cuffs and bibs reduce drag from transitional ridges
  • Race chamois is lightweight but comfortable in long races
  • Castelli's tailoring is fit for professionals and recreationalists alike

Very nice

Very confortable for long rides . High quality product.and fit perfect every where.

    Pad Deformed

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large

After riding with these for a season something weird happened with the chamois/pad. Floating around inside the chamois there is now a gel blob that can cause problems when it migrates to the wrong place. I've never had a pair of bike shorts do this and I care for all of my stuff the same way. Unfortunately I shelved these things and pulled out some older bibs in the meantime but they probably failed right around the 12 month mark.

Otherwise nice fabric, good leg grippers and fit is a tad small (I wore large and I'm 5'10" 170). I was definitely hoping to get another season out of these things.

    Love it

My first bib and fits great and feels great when I ride.

Glad to hear it! Thanks, Marshall!

Wore these once and returned them.

I purchased these as a hopeful step-up from the Velocissimo, which I have found to be very comfortable for long rides of 125-200 miles. I had heard great things about these and while they were on sale I jumped on it and got a pair.

Sadly, one ride out in them and I knew they wouldn't work. after 75 miles I hated the pad and had the sore butt to prove it. It was a good . try, but I went back and got another pair of Velocissimo.

I am 5'11" 178 and usually wear a medium. I sized up to a large on these and they fit great. Just a bad pad.

      Nice bibs, horrible logo stickers

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

The 2 red Castelli logos on the front middle of the thighs are giant (1.75in wide), stand out on the black background and are extremely ugly.

      As good as it gets.

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: large

First of all, super comfortable fabric. Feels like a second - better - skin.
Compelled to write a review because I crashed wearing these. Went down hard on my left side. I knew before I even got up the skin on my hip was GONE. Not so much as a thread pull on the fabric. Seriously. NO DAMAGE, Not much fun peeling them off after another 22 mls, but ...yeah, great pc of equipment.

      Great Comfort

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: XL

I've worn these on three century rides, and they are the most comfortable bibs I own. If you're in the market for bibs give these a try. You won't be disappointed.

      Amazing fit

        The best

        Great bibs

Caught the $149 sale and crossed my fingers on fit. I selected the XL based on tech specs and reviews. My sorpasso cold weather bibs are a L but are form versus race fit. Same chamois in both. The suspenders are on the tight side with the aero bibs but tolerable. Rode 32 miles the day I got them and am happy with the new piece of kit. I’m 6’2” @ 200# with a +|-2#. Also these bibs are made in El Salvador. This is where I think the variations in fit happen. All of my cycling kit is from castelli. Manufactured in Romania, Morocco and El Salvador.

          Love ‘em!

I was on the fence about bibs. Not anymore. These Look great & feel even better. One word of caution: Castelli’s run small. At 6’ and 195 lbs, XL is plenty snug. And it’s the suspenders where I notice it the most. My Castelli CX suits are XXL and I could’ve gone either way with the bibs.

          Runs small, Perfect Bib

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
          • Fit: Runs small

This is my go to bib. It can take a beating also, I have fallen twice (cornering at low speed) and they have no visible wear or damage. They run a bit small, so size up. The length is perfect in my opinion, and once the gripper at the bottom of the leg is in place it is not moving.
The Progetto X2 Air chamois is great. no complaints.

          Tight, perfect fit for me

I like super euro tight fitting race kits. These fit the bill. The inseam is a little shorter and the fit is tight. Runs "small", but only if you like US sizing. If you do, size up one size and you will be happy, but the inseam may still be a little shorter than most Americans are used to. Great bibs though, high quality with a great chamois.

          Great shorts, will buy again.

I have been a long time fan of Castelli ever since I tried there Kiss chamois back in the early 2000's. These new Aero Race shorts stay true to that quality and fit that I have come to expect. The new Progetto X2 chamois is awesome. The shorts fit snugly but very comfortable and I am glad I sized up. If you do the measurements and follow the chart you should be good to go. I will be purchasing another pair soon, to replace my worn out Kiss shorts.

          Unanswered Question

are these back to normal fit; like pre 2016? I used to get 2 bibs per year, same ones every year. Then in 2016 they changed something, made them super tight with a weird fitting chamois. Returned them. 2017, same. I've worn the hell out of what I have, and havent found a good replacement bib from anyone else.

          A little small

          • Fit: Runs small
          • Size Bought: medium

Beautifully made but because it is a little small (I ordered a medium and probably should have ordered a large-I am 5'7", weigh 170 with a 34 waist). The shorts are fine on my trail bike which has a wider seat, but my road bike which has a Fizit seat becomes uncomfortable after about 30 miles. When I order another, I will get a large. The quality of construction is well worth the price.

          High Quality

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times
          • Fit: True to size

These bibs are super sweet. The fit is really nice, and the chamois is more comfortable than most. Pretty simple bibs, nothing too fancy, just super fast!

What is the inseam length on these?

These are great bibs, but I wish the inseam was an inch or so longer. I'm 6' with a 34 inseam, and the Medium is cut just a hair short for my liking. Still highly recommended, however.

Approximately 8 inches for size M, btw.

Best so far but not perfect

I typically wear the LG line but was in the market for bibs with higher quality chamois. The Progetto X2 chamois in these bibs is definitely a step up from the LG Airzone and and a little more forgiving than the LG 4Motion . I definitely feel the difference with a more comfortable ride over longer distances (50+ miles).

I am 6' 1" 190 lbs and settled on the XL (I usually wear a L in the LG's). These still have good compression on my rather slender thighs but I wish the straps were a little longer and wider. But so far these are the best bibs I have used.

          Very Cool But Some Friction

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times
          • Fit: Runs small
          • Size Bought: XXXL

I wan to love these shorts. On hot days they are very cool and comfortable. EXCEPT there is some friction and soreness. I bought two pairs and each exhibit the same problem in the same area of my anatomy.

          Too bad.

          Still the best

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
          • Fit: Runs small
          • Size Bought: XL

I have been using these shorts for the last three years. I have noticed some quality problems last year but this year they appear to have the quality control back under control.

I have tried numerous different brands but always end up back with these. Very comfortable, sweat wicking, great straps, nice quality. I have gone on 7 hour rides and never needed Chamois Creme with these.

Not sure why some people don't like the updated version. It fits exactly the same as the prior versions.

          Still the best

no way does it fit the same as the old version. tighter in the legs and a weird sewn in chamois which bunches up. came here to see if 2018 is any better, but no comments yet.

Where’s that grand fondo guy nice!
