Tricam Evo — three placement modes, one lightweight trad piece
Gearhead® Review
What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"I've always kept a few classic Tricams on my trad rack, but the Evo genuinely improves on them. The stiffened sling is the real win — one-handed placements are noticeably easier, especially in awkward stances. The third placement possibility opens up spots that would've been marginal with the original. Fair warning: these still take some practice to place confidently, particularly in active/cammed mode. Not a beginner's first piece, but a worthy addition once you know how to use them."
Who It's For
Experienced trad climbers comfortable with passive and hybrid protection
The Tricam Evo suits trad climbers who already understand how tricams work and want to expand their rack's versatility without adding weight. It's a strong fit for climbers who frequent constrictions, pockets, and horizontal cracks where conventional cams or nuts struggle — or who want a lightweight, affordable complement to their main cam set.
What It's For
Trad climbing in pockets, slots, horizontals, and constrictions
The Tricam Evo excels in placements that challenge other gear: shallow pockets, solution holes, horizontal cracks, and constrictions too shallow for cams. It can be placed passively like a nut or actively like a cam, and the redesigned head adds a third passive chock position, widening the range of cracks where it works effectively.
Why We Like It
Three placement modes, stiffened sling, and a weight advantage over comparable cams
The Evo's redesigned head geometry creates a third chocking position — a genuine improvement over the original's two — while the wider taper also adds stability in cammed placements. The stiffened sling is a practical upgrade: CAMP stitches the inner webbing band further toward the head, making single-handed placements significantly easier without sacrificing the flex needed for active engagement. At the small end of the range, the Evo covers territory where cams are either too bulky or too costly to carry in multiples.
