Problem solved.

When heading out for a day hike, you're faced with the age-old dilemma—bring a bulky backpack that could be overkill, or just carry a water bottle and hope for the best. Luckily, there's a third option in the CamelBak Arete 18 Hydration Backpack. This ultralight pack is barely noticeable on your back when empty, and it offers enough space to stash a rain jacket, first aid kit, and some snacks. Of course, it also includes a CamelBak hydration system that sits flat against your back for a stable, balanced feel.

You can turn this pack inside out to turn it into a reservoir sleeve on longer treks. That means it serves as a convenient reservoir storage option when you're backpacking on extended camping trips. And when you want to go on a short excursion away from base camp, just turn it back inside out and you have yourself a compact pack for side hikes.

  • Ultralight minimalist hydration and storage option
  • Turns inside-out to become reservoir sleeve
  • Reservoir sits flat against your back
  • Lightweight and durable fabrics withstand wear
  • Mesh shoulder straps are light and breathable
  • Compression straps on lid manage load

Pretty spacious

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Way roomier than we anticipated. There are no interior compartments for organization, but that's not much of an issue for short hikes, or holding just your rain shell and some snacks. Initially I was worried about the flat panel back instead of having some kind of breathable mesh, but so far it's been doing well and hasn't made me feel any sweatier than usual!

Sleek Day Pack

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

If you're looking for a pack to use for day hikes or traveling this pack is great. The new and improved reservoir tube delivers even more water per sip because a slightly larger diameter, surprisingly, it actually makes a difference! I also like the closure for this pack, I think the double buckle system and flap makes it look good. I also enjoy the small zippered pocket for my keys, food, or sunscreen.

Great, compact hydration system

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Nice and small! I recommend this for easy-to-moderate difficulty hikes. You'll run out of water if you try to go an entire day plus with this. But again, great for smaller hikes!

Keep cool in the heat

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love that this has an option to turn inside out, there are cooling spaces on the back when worn, and a storage area in the top. Overall great for running around all summer.
