B17 Standard Saddle

Urban cycling (like cycling in general, to be fair) is all about blending form with function, and nobody does that better than Brooks England. Its B17 Standard Men's Saddle is the epitome of this design philosophy, and Brooks has been making it for over 100 years, so it's not surprising that the company has the B17 pretty much dialed. The full-grain leather cover helps keep the saddle from overheating on warm days, and is designed to conform slowly to your anatomy over long periods of riding, so you'll end up with a nearly custom fit after a few months. The B17's steel rails are strong and absorb road vibrations, and the saddle's wide tail and abrupt taper help provide a solid pedaling platform while eliminating rubbing and discomfort.

  • Full-grain leather cover
  • Steel rails
  • Wide rear
  • Narrow nose
  • Large taper

The. Best. Saddle. Period!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Mine came with my Salsa Marrakesh and I couldn't be happier. I "cheated" a bit on the break in (http://www.randorichard.com/saddle-break-in) and was riding it comfortably on day two. I rode it from Washington to Colorado and had absolutely no problems. I like it so much I'm adding one to my Carbon Fiber Roubaix. The extra bit of weight is a penalty I'm willing to pay for all day comfort!

The. Best. Saddle. Period!

Just so Comfy

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

No longer a slave to "padded adult diapers" has been the single best upgrade I have made to my bike build. I wear whatever shorts I want and can ride all day in comfort. No friction, no sores, just sweet spinning all day long. The 1 and only thing I would change if I did it again would be to possibly swap for the b17 with the cutout in the middle. But still, more than pleased with this thing so far.

As far as break in, I guess my butt is a lucky shape because it was comfy right away, and 200 miles later its really starting to mold and just gets better every ride.

Lasting Quality and Comfort.

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

My husband has been wanting a Brooks saddle for years, but would never buck up and buy one for himself. So, for his 30th birthday I bought him a handful of bike-specific stuff that he's been talking about for, oh just the past 5 years. And the Brooks B17 was one o them.

So, the craftsmanship is uncanny. The leather is premium quality: durable, yet flexible enough to mold to your bottom. I bought him the black and it pairs beautiful with his steely grey Surly Pacer.

This saddle is pretty stiff right off the bat, but once you tack on the miles, it really starts to break in to the, erm, contours of your derriere. This saddle really will last a long time, but it'll last even longer if you take care of it! Leather needs love, so make sure you're giving it the good juju it needs with the Brooks leather saddle treatment goo.

Great Saddle

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Got this saddle for a friend, but I am very familiar with them already. These saddles need to be taken care of a bit more than some others, leaving them out in the elements without a cover for too long is bad idea. The leather can get ruined by rain or snow over time, as well as freeze and thaw cycles.

The benefit of this saddle is that it will break in eventually to your own sit bones, unlike synthetic saddles that are designed for a very specific width of sit bones. Once broken in, a brooks is super comfy and add points to ride quality for sure. Also, this model of saddle works with a good range of handlebar positions, but are commonly paired with upright handlebars, where they shine as an all-star.

There Is No Butter Seat Out There!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Got this bike seat a couple weeks ago, and could not be happier with my purchase. At first it can be a little stiff, but with just a few rides it morphs and fits perfectly to your behind.

Have to say it was one of the comfiest saddles I have ever used. Makes me want to ride my bike even more than I do now!

For the price, ya really can not beat it.

Comfort to outlast your bike.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've now put over 10,000 miles on my Brooks and transferred it to 3 of my recent bikes. Still looks great with very little wear. It's a saddle, that when broken in, will be the perfect fit and most comfortable match you've ever ridden. I tour, commute, and race with mine. It has definitely been my favorite saddle.

Give it about a week of good riding (about 120 miles) to break in. And I highly recommend getting a Brooks rain cover for it too, if you plan on touring or commuting on it. The cover folds up small and straps nicely to the rail under the saddle.

Comfort to outlast your bike.

Impressed so far!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I recently picked up the Brooks saddle and I'm very pleased with it so far. I've applied 2 coats of Proofide, so it's starting to soften up and the color has darkened. If you're on the fence about picking one up, I would say go for it. Just make sure to buy a can of Proofide (although the saddle comes with a small amount) as well as a saddle cover if it rains.

Why did I not know about Brooks?

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

No, seriously, why did I not know about them? This saddle is amazing, new favorite product line. I am still in the breaking in stage, and can already see the potential that is around the corner. These saddles do exactly what they are designed to do, which is fit you perfectly and comfortably, albeit you are willing to break it in. Make that booty happy, and classy riding on leather.

The best.

After broken in, these saddles are the best for long rides. Nothing cradles you like good ol leather.

Great Investment!

I ride my 1974 French Made "Lyberia" at least 25K weekly. Love my bike...love my Brooks!

    Great Investment!

It is a little on the heavy/bulky side and would look funny on a carbon bike, but on my steel road bike that still rides beautifully it looks fine and it is the first seat that I can say is fantastic. The added weight compared to my old saddle is minimal when I think of my ideal cycling weight and what I do weigh now, and to get there I need to ride. This saddle keeps me on the bike longer and I ride more frequently. AWESOME.... if you're like me, it was the best thing I did to ride more!!!

      Can't beat the price

This saddle is more than comfortable. It's comfy out of the box, but only gets better as time goes on. Absolutely love it. Looks great and the leather looks better as it wears in. My only complaint is that the seat is a little noise. Seems the rails creek when you shift your butt around or pedal.

Generally seats will creek because the rails need to be greased or more likely the seat post collar is dirty and just needs to be wiped. Probably not the actually seat creaking.

        Great seat!

It takes a bit to break it in but once it's dialed in it's great!

          British Support

I tried many saddles, but this one's the best for me. The smooth leather allows weight shifting to a different saddle position easily. This provides welcome change. These saddles are made very, very well, and should last a lifetime. The adjustment bolt is hard to change...I understand there is a special tool for it. This tightens the leather thay may stretch a bit. This should be done twice a year for the leather to be kept taught.

For the price, this is an excellent seat. Looks awesome feels great. Haven't got the chance to really break it in yet, but its still comfortable even when its new.

              It's the Sh*t!

                Great saddle!

As everyone knows, it takes a few miles to work in, but after that: smooth sailing and it looks awesome!

Not for everyone, but if it is your school of cool, you won't be disappointed.
