Soloist Glove

High mountains, technical terrain, and bad weather call for a glove that's warm, dry, and dextrous, and the Black Diamond Soloist Glove fits the bill. It's made with a waterproof BDry insert that's integrated with the removable insulated liner for a serious blend of warmth, dryness, and dexterity, and has a reinforced goatskin leather palm with ultra-durable Kevlar stitching. The abrasion-resistant nylon shell also stretches in four directions for ease of movement, making it easier to handle ropes, ice axes, and ski poles when taking your gloves off would be a serious mistake.

  • Four-way stretch woven nylon shell
  • Goatskin leather palm with Kevlar-stitched palm patch
  • Removable waterproof BDry insert
  • Removable liner with PrimaLoft Gold insulation

What you expect for BD Quality

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Solid glove. Good price for what you get. PrimaLoft insulated liner, held very securely by Velcro around the cuff, inside a durable, well stitched BDry shell. The shell works OK if you wanted to slip into them with liner gloves instead of the PrimaLoft inserts they come with, so that’s a nice option as well for a warmer day.

Almost perfect

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Size: Large
I have an 8" finger length, with a 9" circumference. Hestra sizing puts me in a 10.

The sizing and construction are fantastic. My fingers just graze the ends without being squished and the thumb construction allows you to grab something firmly without jamming. The leather is supple, while the Pertex feels tough. I have no concerns about long-term durability on these.

I'm using these for bike commuting, and the warmth/dexterity combo is perfect. It's been in the 20's, and as long as I'm putting in a little effort, my hands stay warm, even with the wind. While they are on the bulky side, I still have enough dexterity to operate my Ultegra brifters, zippers, lights, and helmet clip.

The only reasons I'm not giving 5 stars are there are no leashes for snowboarding, and the membrane is in the liner, which means if you remove them, the shells won't be waterproof.

Very Warm

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Got these hoping they would work as gloves for really cold days when my more mid-weight, day-to-day gloves aren't quite warm enough. Took them out skiing yesterday on a day when it was 5-10F and slightly windy and found them perfect for that role. They were super warm, just a smidge shy of being a bit too warm actually. In the wind and sitting on the lift were all perfectly warm, and I get cold fingers pretty easily. Not in these!

I almost always wear a Large in gloves, and the fit of these was as good as I could hope for. My fingers reach the end of the glove fingers, which helps with dexterity. That's important on these gloves, because, they're mildly bulky and not the best for dexterity. They're perfectly fine for skiing and pulling zippers that have pulls and working the drawcords around the wrists and gauntlets, but not for anything requiring much more dexterity than that. Still, for how warm they are, the dexterity is actually great when that is considered.

As mentioned, they have a wrist closure to cinch, which is easy to manipulate with them on, and the gauntlet ends have a drawcord closure that can be tightened or loosened with one gloved hand. The leather on the palm is nice and soft and the pertex fabric seems pretty burly.

The removable liner is held in very securely by a velcro band that encircles the inside of the glove just below the wrist cinch. The liner does not bunch up or pull out, even with sweaty hands. Good gloves, and I could not be happier with them for the purpose I got them...unusually cold days on the ski hill.
