Bombproof protection without the weight.

With the Black Diamond Men's Liquid Point Shell Jacket, you don't have to choose between burly waterproof protection and light weight. Made with Gore-Tex PacLite, this waterproof and windproof shell is easily stuffed in the bottom of your pack for when an unexpected storm blows through the uppermost elevations.

With a weight of just 14.5 ounces, it won't weigh you down during long approaches and multi-day backpacking trips, but that doesn't mean it won't fend of even the most unruly mountain storms. Fully taped seams, a DWR treatment, and a water-resistant center front zipper all prevent water from seeping through, while its helmet-compatible hood, and adjustable cuffs and hem let you batten down the hatches when the skies go from grey to black.

  • Stay protected without being weighted down with this jacket
  • Waterproof, breathable Gore-Tex construction protects you
  • Regular fit enables room for movement in the mountains
  • Underarm zippered vents allow for a quick cool down
  • Multiple pockets stash adventure essentials close by

Fits perfect, except the length

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

After reading reviews on 15 different jackets on 10 different sites, I determined that the Liquid Point had everything I was looking for. That is until I tried in on. At 5'6" and 145lbs, I purchased a small expecting it to fit and it did, except for the length. The jacket is entirely too long, to the point that it even restricts movement. I wanted to like it, it had all the features I wanted, 2.5 layer Gore-Tex, sturdy materials and zippers, pit-zip, and relatively light and packable. I even held onto the jacket for two weeks hoping I could move past the issue, but in the end I had to return it. Never even got to wear it, outside of trying it on multiple times. It's a shame, it's otherwise a great product.

Unanswered Question

What is the waterproof rating? 10k, 20k?

I own a large BD Cold Forge jacket. I want a shell. What size Liquid Point do I want to buy to fit over the large Cold Forge?

In order to fit the shell over that jacket, you will most likely want an XL in order to have the space for no restrictions with your body while layered up.

Good but not ideal for me

Hood fits well over ski helmet and kept me MUCH warmer on the infamous green mountain freezer at Jay peak. Shoveling without a helmet, I was able to cinch the good down to a comfortable form around my head.

I’ve used the pit zips but never notice the difference because I wear a down jacket underneath anyway.

No chest pocket is nbd but I had to jump to register my ski pass at Jay’s card scanning turnstiles.

Fits well over my montbell alpine light jacket (hoodless).

I would have overlooked the minor inconveniences and given 5 stars if it weren’t for this incident:
While tree skiing I hit a branch and received a 5 inch tear horizontally on the sleeve. Thankfully it protected my down jacket but GTX Pro would certainly not have torn in this instance so skiers
beware wearing this jacket into the glades. I think the star reduction is justified since it’s billed as a back country ski shell but isn’t really tough enough for the woods.

TLDR Good jacket but if you ski the woods just spend the extra money for a bullet proof shell

Light Packable Do All Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Versatile, light weight and pack able. The BD Liquid Point Jacket is a great value for a technical GoreTex jacket. This is a go to for everything from keeping dry in the rain hiking, a light weight shell shell for touring/climbing and works well around town too.

It doesn't have a chest pocket, but these are an optional item for me and the hand pockets work for storage. Pit zips are mandatory for me so this was a key deciding factor.

It's what I needed

Fantastic jacket!

I got this jacket under strong advisement from "my" tech guru at Backcountry. We wanted something that looked good, fit well, was durable (but not necessarily as "bulletproof as a typical hardshell .... like GoreTex Pro), was

, waterproof but highly breathable, and lightweight... BD scored on all these points. He loved the fit and has used in in all but our coldest NE winter ski days ... summer hiking in the White Mountains of NH and the Alps, rainy day hikes with backpack, and even our "warmer" New England ski days (by "warmer" I mean anything over 20 degrees with a little sun ... with nothing but a micro-fleece base layer underneath). It's super lightweight and packs down to nearly nothing (considering it's not ever called a "packable jacket"). It still sheds water and breaths as well as the day we got it. I really can't think of anything we DON'T like... So pleased. Some may say it runs a little loose, but over a base layer, it's perfect in our opinion. (attached photo : he's only wearing a t-shirt underneath...) Thanks again for great advise on a great product!

Fantastic jacket!

Not for short people

  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Med

The jacket appears to be high quality but the fit is for tall people. I am 5'7" 165 lbs. Athletic build. The Med was was too baggy and long, tried the Small. Was way too tight around shoulders and still very long. So just a heads up to fellow "shorter" shoppers.

Initial Impression - Bomber!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

Just got this jacket and had the chance to take it out camping last weekend. This is definitely a well made jacket. The construction is solid and it held it's own in a rain storm. Water beaded up on the outside and kept me nice and dry. It's paclite, so it also packs down... well, light. Great all around shell.

A couple of other notes, as one other reviewer mentioned, it is lacking in pockets. Not a huge deal for me as I wasn't expecting them, but some additional storage would be nice. I'm a big fan of the pit zip construction. Very easy to access and dump heat easily. The jacket definitely fits loosely. I went with the large (which I always do when it comes to BD) and I was on the fence as to whether or not I'd size down to the medium. In the end I kept the large so I'd have some extra space for layering, but it's a bit baggy. Lastly, the zipper comes up pretty high at the neck. This can be nice for tucking your chin down on a cold day, or shielding yourself from campfire smoke, as well as wind/rain protection with a helmet on.

All in all, another bomber piece from BD!!!

Dope jacket! I'm picky though...

Love the jacket. Feels like a real solid shell! Not super flimsy like some lighter ones. Feels like it could take a beating. Taping is unreal! Solid joints I'd say! Water beads right off and doesn't soak through the membrane even when the outer layer does. Three things though! First thing, the hood has a 4 in 1 cinch in the back of the hood. You can not cinch the depth and opening separately! If you don't have it cinched and you don't have a helmet on it's gonna cover your eyes, period! Second thing, It only has 2 pockets! I emailed Black Diamond (they said they would fix it) because their website said it has a chest pocket. IT DOES NOT have a chest pocket! It only has two normal pockets and they are not vented. If there is a downpour and you have your hands in them water will run down your arms into the pockets and it gets clammy in there. I guess that's normal and they seemed to wick the water out fairly quickly. Third thing, I feel that black diamond is one of the slimmer fitting American brands you can buy but they seem to be going a tad boxy on this one. The saving grace of the extra room (Which you would need if your layering heavily. I use a BD Hot Forge down hooded jacket and still have plenty of room to layer a mid and base) is that it hangs nicely in the back and in the silhouette. Solid jacket but needs that chest pocket and I feel it needs some pocket liner that absorbs moisture and wicks it away and a hood that my head doesn't swim in if its not cinched.

My to-go jacket

This is a very light, packable jacket. I have used it in wet snow ski, raining day hiking and high altitude climbing. They keep my body dry and warm in summer and winter. Yes, gore-tex paclite works well too. This is the photo when I was on a ~19000ft peak.

My to-go jacket

Thanks for taking the time to write this review, Zimu! Glad to hear you're loving the jacket!

so good!

I have brought it on multiple backcountry ski tours and it does NOT disappoint. It packs very nicely, and its probably the most durable jacket I have ever owned. I would recommend this jacket to anyone.
the GORE-TEX 2.5 layer doesn't disappoint, the climbing helmet adjustable hood, and the large pockets. The GORE-TEX feels extremely waterproof, durable, and its the type of material I always needed out in the backcountry. After purchasing this jacket. The climbing adjustable hood is super convenient knowing that at any time I can put my hood on without moving things around and putting things back into my pack. And the large pockets make for extra convenience such as map storage, headlamp, food, ect...

Great Jacket

Got this jacket, as suggested by "my" gearhead, for my 14 yo son as he prepared for a trip to Europe. He Loves it. Fit is perfect (Men's medium, he's approx.5'10" and about 150 lbs) and he can't wait to use it skiing. And it looks great, too. So glad I listened. As with all other purchases I've made in the past, customer service is amazing!

I live on the ocean .We get a lot of wind blown rain, so far this jacket has preformed excellent. I bought XL and the fit is just right . I can fit my blackdiamond down blend hoodie under it with no problems when skiing or alone on a rainy summer day.

Tested and Approved.

  • Fit: Runs small

I tried this out in a rain demo last fall at Backcountry HQ, it was a race of cunning and whit, while people sprayed you with hoses. Although I was beaten badly, when I took off the jacket, I was bone dry! Later that week, I went out and bought my own Black Diamond Liquid Point Shell Jacket and I am very happy with the results. I have used it at football games, skiing...and coming soon to this summer CLIMBING/HIKING!

Updates to come.

This jacket is AWESOME! It's totally bomber. I wear it most days for all sorts of activities and it never lets me down! It takes up no room in my pack when I have to store it. It's lightweight and still keeps me warm. It's got to be the quietest Gore-tex jacket I've ever owned. The hand is super soft feeling!
The jacket is lightweight enough that I was initially worried about it and after putting wearing it hiking, back country snowboarding through tight trees I think this thing is nearly bulletproof.

Got it on Sale. I love it.

This is my go-to jacket. It's definitely waterproof and it is stylin'!

The pit-zippers are a little hard to open by yourself unless you hold the jacket down with one hand and unzip with the other, but I love them anyways.

I like that it is helmet-compatible; I've yet to use it with my climbing helmet, but I've definitely used it many times with my bike helmet and it's done swell.

The chest pocket just inside the zipper is nice.

I got the blue, and I just love the color.

I don't know if I would've bought it at full retail, but at ~50% on REI.com it was a steal, and did I mention I love it?

Got it on Sale. I love it.

I just got back from a week skiing in Colorado and am so glad I got this shell. It kept me super dry all week and was very lightweight.

When paired with a medium base layer, it was quite warm for skiing in 30-40 degree weather. When paired with a light base, it was perfect for 40+ degree spring skiing. Ventilation options were great, pockets were accommodating, and fit was dead on.

Best shell I've owned. BD is killing it with apparel!

A great balance

This jacket is freaking RAD. If you're looking for a good balance of performance in the waterproof, packability, and bad-ass-style departments, look no further. At first, I was skeptical of the 2 layer GoreTex Paclite material (I had used a similar 2 layer rain jacket that degraded after a season), but now I have no concerns with the lifespan of this fabric. This jacket really holds up in a downpour, and looks great doing it. A lot of my friends have lower-end rain jackets that end up wetting out, or maybe the hood's shape lets water run onto their face. I just watch and shake my head, cozy and dry.

This has been my go-to rain layer for all activities, summer and winter. I'€™ve used it extensively on backcountry skiing outings, as a wind-proof layer on summit missions, during week-long downpours in Alaska, as well as guiding wilderness horse-packing trips. I've caught this jacket on tree-branches and rose bushes and got away without any rips. This is a simple, do-it-all shell! Black Diamond really knows what they're doing.

Of course, the breathability is lacking. But it'™s worth having the high waterproof rating. Since I don'™t really hike in the tropics, a hot rainstorm isn'™t really something I have to deal with anyway. For the dryer, colder climates I frequent, this jacket fits the bill perfectly.

I'™m 5'€™8 155lbs, 32 waist, 42 chest, and the Medium fits great with a little room for a midlayer.

Pros:
Ultra Waterproof
More packable than 3L GoreTex
Decently durable
Steeze
Seems like this jacket will last a long time

Cons:
Not breathable
Can feel uncomfortable next-to-skin
