First Light Hooded Insulated Jacket

The Black Diamond Women's First Light Hooded Insulated Jacket takes the edge off dawn patrols and alpine starts when you're skiing and climbing. It won't get your ass out of the sleeping bag when your alarm goes off—that's still on you—but it will help you feel like you never got out of bed when you're on the approach. Its stretchy Schoeller shell is surprisingly soft for how durable it is, and it's breathable for highly active endeavors, as is Primaloft's Silver Active insulation that adds the touch of warmth required for moving in frigid temperatures. Black Diamond treated the shell with Nanosphere to repel snowflakes, raindrops, dirt, and oily substances. If you get too warm, the jacket stows inside its own pocket and clips to harnesses and backpack straps for convenient, compact storage.

  • Insulated full-zip for dawn patrols on the tour or climb
  • Primaloft Silver Active stays warm and breathable
  • Breathable, durable, and stretchy Schoeller shell
  • Nanosphere Technology repels water, dirt, and oil
  • Adjustable hood fits over most climbing helmets
  • Jacket stows inside the internal chest pocket

My new favorite

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Size Bought: XL

Got this to replace a puffy jacket that only lasted a couple of seasons before the fabric became noticeably pilled and worn from wearing it under a hydration pack while hiking. I have a tough time finding womens' jackets that fit me well because I have large arms, so after reading reviews, I was worried that this jacket wouldn't fit me. I can't wear thick layers underneath, but otherwise I love the fit and can wear a slim base layer or thin hoodie underneath with no issues. It fits well in the body, and the hood is large enough to stretch over a climbing helmet comfortably, but not so large that it flops around and gets in my face when I am not wearing a helmet. The fabric proved to be very durable when I wore it scrambling around Red Rocks and in a couple of limestone climbing areas and came back with no noticeable wear. It was undamaged by sharp rocks and prickly desert plants. Bomber. It's my new favorite. I love it.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I have had this coat for a couple years and love it. It's tough and can take anything you throw at it. I have worn it on the some chilly MTB rides in the Alps, countless hikes in the snow under a shell, and it's my go to daily coat. I am 5'9" with long arms and slightly shorter torso. This coat in S fits comfortable over all my mid layers well, though a size M fits me super well, for a more baggy look. I wanted a slightly fitted coat for the everyday active use, and this one is it! I would highly recommend!

Warm but not super flattering

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M

This jacket performs and will keep you warm. The fit was is a bit chunky and I found the sleeves to be super long on me. But I'd rather have slightly longer sleeves than shorter sleeves. I've worn this jacket on warmer ski days or just out walking my dog.

Great for stop and go work outs

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I have had the chance to try this jacket on and have some feedback to give. It's a great layer for winter aerobic activity - touring, snowshoeing, etc. Super warm and durable. I like the nanosphere technology because I tend to end my day covered in dirt and crashing through a few trees and it gives the jacket a great durability. It can be worn as your insulating layer or outer layer depending on the conditions for the day.

Pocket Situation: 2 for your hands and one internal pocket the jacket can be stuffed into.

Care Instructions: Machine Washable with a low grade detergent. Hang to dry.

Sizing Tip: BD women's products run slim. If you're looking for outdoor gear that still keeps your figure, I'd definitely recommend their apparel.

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure around the fullest part of the neck, at the base.
Measure around the apex of the bust, just under the arms and across the shoulder blades.
Measure around the narrowest part of the waist.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
Measure from the center back of the neck, across the shoulder, and down the arm to the wrist.
