Warm!

This was my first down jacket and was impressed how much warmer it was than my polyester filled jacket of about the same size. I've had it for about three weeks now and have worn it quite a few times, both in and outdoors and havent had any issues with down coming out, at least nothing that alarmed me; there were a few small feathers when i first got it but havent seen anything since. Be aware though, the inside "pockets" arent actually pockets and there is a hole at the bottom, so you could loose something small. However a phone would stay put in them. These "pockets" are just the zippered pockets on the outside that have been stitched to the inside so they aren't moving around,

Good Cheap Down Jacket

I picked this up for $65 off Steep and Cheap and it's definitely worth it. I'd pay up to ~ $100 for this jacket. The sizing is decent for the most part - 6'2", 180 lbs and large is good for the sleeves, slightly large throughout the body. The hood is the only thing that doesn't fit - it looks like it's sized for helmet compatibility, but doesn't have any adjustability, which makes it useless with just a beanie. I wore it today in 10 deg F weather (dry, no wind) with just a North Face TKA 100 fleece mid layer and it was just warm enough

I like

I have the non-hooded version of this jacket. Since I can't find that on here, I'm reviewing under this product, since they are the same jacket, just with or without hood!
Sizing: True to size. Buy the size you normally would - nothing crazy here. The cut is normal. It is not tailored or slimming at all. I guess you could say it a standard straight down from the armpit to the waist. The arms feel tight, but I think that its because the down is so lofty it just feels tight. But the armpits actually are tight. You know those t-shirts that fit tight in the armpits/shoulder? This fits like that. I think the pit region could be a bit more generous in roominess.
This jacket is so soft. I don't want to take it off. Very comfortable. 800-fill down is quality. I haven't noticed any large feathers leaking out yet. Just small strands that probably got caught in the stitching process, which are working there way out. Nothing major.
The inside phone pocket is actually located inside the zippered pocket. The right hand pocket to be exact. Its like a little pouch inside the pocket. Literally a pocket in a pocket. Pocket inception. Seems pretty useless, but to be honest since it's there I will probably use it anyway. My iPhone 7 fits in there, but its a snug fit with my slim case. iPhone Plus probably won't fit in there.
On a side note apart from the jacket, I love that Basin and Range's logo is the universal symbol for camping. I also love that there is like zero branding on the jacket. This jacket is very clean and simple looking.

So Good I Bought it Twice!

I love this puffy so much I bought my brother one for his birthday. The loft isn't too bulky but the coat is lightweight and oh so cozy warm. (It can be seen in both black and brick red in the photo). Sisters will verify it is much warmer than women's REI standard and Patagonia nano puff.

Great Camper

I bought this because I was looking for a lightweight down jacket to wear around the campfire, on chilly early morning starts, and might try it out as a top layer for touring next year.
I was very happy with the weight: substantial enough to be a standalone top layer, or could go underneath a shell if it really starts getting cold. And also happy about the fit: longer sleeves so I can lift my arms over my head and not get naked wrists, and a drop tail to cover up my lower back when I'm bent down.

Big fan of the fit

I was in the market for a new puffy and heard that basin and range had fixed some of the down leak issues with their wasatch jackets, and so far that seems to be the case. I'm a fan of the slim fit this jacket has, I used it to climb Mt. Washington in February and it was lightweight enough to not notice whether it was on me or in my pack.

What size did you get?

Amazing value & surprising warm

I purchased this jacket on sale and have not regretted it. It is very warm in temps as low as the 20s. Unfortunately, it provides little protection in windy conditions, but a hardshell or layers underneath do help.

The jacket fits great, tapering in around the waste just a bit. The arms are a bit larger, so if you are slim they may feel to big for you. If you have an athletic build, the jacket is true to size. I've worn it with layers underneath and have not felt it was tight, nor did it pinch or restrict my movement. It also has been very comfortable to wear with a shell or other coat/jacket over it.

If you are able to get it on sale, it's a great buy. So much so I just ordered the jacket version of it. It would get 5 stars if the price was usually sub $150, but for $229 it does not provide enough.

arrived with a factory odor and leaking insulation. 2 months later and I'm still apologizing to people for all of the feathers floating around. who needs bread crumbs when you can leave behind a trail of white feathers. An expected amount might come out of the seam, but this jacket leaks right through the fabric.

I usually prefer jackets without a hood, but this one didn't get in the way. Light enough I didn't notice the hood, but nice to have it there when I wanted it. I'm usually right inbetween a small and medium, and the medium drown me. A small would have been perfect.

How much does a large weight?

Nice and comfortable

I only got to try this on once, but I wore it for a while while i was working in the office. I'm typically ware a size large when it comes to shirts and most jackets, but this particular jacket runs large. A size medium even felt a little bit baggy on me. If you run really cold, this could be a good mid layer to wear under a shell when you ski, but I find it to be a little too thick to be worn under my shell, and a little too baggy as well making it feel a bit cumbersome.

I have been looking for a down sweater type hoodie for a while.
I got this for myself just before Xmas but had the wife wrap it up..Anyway, super warm and great fit. I really have not taken it off much, as Denver has been pretty chilly since Xmas. I have multiple down coats from Patagonia, Eddie Bauer and Burton. This one is quickly becoming a favorite.
The hood is big enough to fit a ski helmut and the front pockets are super deep, which make it easy to allow your hands to hangout in warmth. I am 5'6", athletic build, my arms are like a 33" shirt length. the coat fits me like a glove.
Still comfortable though not tight. Quality construction for sure, I would rate it close to Patagonia quality if not the same. Also pockets inside are long. There is a phone cord loop holder at top and drawstring at bottom. Also longer tail to coat is nice for chair lift!

All in all I really am stoked on this coat. Also noticed Basin and Range is a Utah based company, way to go!

I really enjoy this jacket, and wearing it around Switzerland in the winter has been great. Even after diving/swimming in freezing water hunting for fish, when I get out after 30 minutes literally frozen!, I throw this jack on, and instantly, feel warmer.

It does lose some down in the beginning through the seams, but I've had this with my other down jackets I've bought. It only at the very beginning, and it's not anything that compromises the quality of the jacket. I believe it's just the very small, micro feathers that slip through the seams.

The size is a little off. I am 5'11, 165 lbs, and athletic build. I almost always were an 'M' , with almost any brand. However, I wonder if I could have used an

Will not last

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

After wearing this jacket only twice it began to leak insulation. I do not like how there are holes at the bottom of each internal pocket. I lost some valuables the first time I wore this. Seriously why would you put holes in the bottom of a pocket? It is worthless. I would not buy this again.

Sorry to hear about losing your stuff. I saw what you were talking about and although the design certainly looks and acts somewhat like pockets, these technically aren't. They're just the insides of the hand pockets that are sewn to the side. I'll pass this info to the design team so hopefully this doesn't happen again.

This jacket is super warm. It may fit a bit snugger than expected but it is not slim fit. It's super lightweight and packs down small. If you are looking for a basic down jacket this is for you.

There were some comments on the previous version of this jacket relating to issues with the fill, however, this update has solved all of those concerns with flying colors.

Very much into the small detailing and the fit is one of the best I've ever tried in a puffy. The only thing I miss is the older earthy tones.

I typically am between a medium and large size in a shirt but go with a large which gives me a looser fit. Wore a medium in this jacket and it fit closer to a large on me but with the added benefit of the nice tailored feeling around the shoulders.

Glad to hear they fixed it the down issues. I have the first model and really would love one that doesn't leak down. Mine seems to have slowed down which is good. It is an awesome jacket!

How does this compare to other similar models from Patagonia/BD in terms of sizing ? Normally I wear M size jackets from these brands.

The arms and length at the waist are a tad longer on this item as it compares to similar Patagonia/BD/Mammut items

If it lasts will be a great coat.

This coat is too hot to wear right now in southern Utah. The price was too good to pass up. Fits great looks great. Is very warm. Will be belaying in it this winter and bagging some peaks. Will update after some use.
