Basin and Range Empire 3L Shell Jacket - Men's

Gear up.

When you wake up to the mountain buried in over a foot of fresh snow, and a few more inches expected throughout the day, throw on the Basin and Range Men's Empire 3L Shell Jacket and get up the canyon. This three-layer shell is built to withstand snow, howling chairlift winds, and of course, endless powder runs. Fully taped seams prevent moisture from seeping through, while a DWR finish makes moisture bead along the face fabric. Two underarm vents help you regulate body temperature as you pound out powder run after powder run. A helmet-compatible hood provides an extra layer of protection from wind and falling snow, while an integrated powder skirt seals out snow, keeping you warm and dry so you can ski until lifts stop spinning.

  • A ski and snowboard jacket for all-weather protection
  • Three-layer shell is waterproof and breathable
  • Fully sealed seams stop moisture from seeping through
  • Powder skirt keeps snow out
  • Zippered underarm vents for ventilation during exertion
  • Drop tail hem for extra protection
  • Regular fit for easy layering

Gets the job done

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I've been using last seasons model for all of this season. The jacket was purchased on sale, and for the price I paid I think it is a great jacket. It feels well made, blocks out the wind, keeps me dry, and I've gotten a number of compliments on its appearance. It also fits the layers that I need for the coldest days (wool baselayer, thin fleece, thin down puffy) without being excessively baggy. All in all, a great success.

A few comments on issues that kept it from a full 5 stars below:

The pockets are all smaller than I want them to be. Each and every one of them would benefit from being larger.

More pockets would be nice too...

The hood is helmet "compatible", but with a helmet on and the hood pulled up I have seriously reduced range of motion with my head. As a snowboarder, its pretty hard to look uphill when merging. I only wear the hood up on the really windy days because it helps so much to block the wind. Just wish I could turn my head more with it up.

Once again, the above items are minor in terms of the big picture. I like the jacket and definitely will be looking to hang onto it for as long as possible. But there is room for improvement.

Awesome Shell.

Looks great and feels good. Even with a just a shirt warm, felt good for the stark of conditions. With a layer or two underneath, I was ready for the cold winter.

New Favorite Ski Jacket

This is by farm my favorite ski jacket that I have ever owned. It fits perfectly to fit a nice undershirt and mid layer without all the bulk. The seems are tapered, zippers are water tight and the shell is lined with a nice fleece material but super thin. The hood is extra large to fit over a helmet and there are endless amounts of useful pockets.
