Backcountry has over 30 years of experience pioneering the outdoor industry and Burton has 40-plus years of their own paving the way in snowboard design, so it was a match made in powder heaven when we collaborated on the Promise Land Splitboard. Made with input from our most experienced Gearheads here in Salt Lake City—who know the legendary Wasatch Range that is our backyard better than anyone—this split is named after and designed for the type of terrain found in one of our favorite zones in the Utah backcountry.
Right off of Peak 10420, the wooded area called "Promise Land" has steep clearings, tight trees on low-angle slopes, and plenty of protected powder thanks to its thick Evergreens, to give us powdery natural terrain that this split loves to lap. Floaty, nimble, and light, the medium-flexing Promise Land has a directional swallowtail shape and 15mm of taper to help sink the tail and buoy the larger nose for effortless float in deep powder, while also turning between tight trees with agility and maintaining stability at speed in those steep sections. The Directional Camber profile further enhances float while juicing our deep-driving turns with extra power on the descent, and also ensures a smoother glide when we're on the skin track back up.
Equal parts light and strong, the splitboard-specific wood core offers pop, strength, and reduced weight to help us drop cliffs with control, ollie fallen trees, and make easy work of the uphill. Light and lightning-quick, the 45° Carbon Highlights balance a lively, responsive feel with power and aggression for busting through the chop. Even though the stance is setback almost two inches, the Balanced Freeride Geometry makes for a twin-like, freestyle feel on flat while still turning tight and fast with the surfy, float we expect from a directional pow deck. Among our favorite features is the Split Channel, giving us one of the strongest, fastest, easiest, and most adjustable mounting systems ever offered on a splitboard, and the pre-mounted pucks make the setup a piece of cake right out of the box.
