Why We Built The Synthetic 3/4 Insulated Pant

When our next dawn patrol is sure to be a chilly one, we pull out the Synthetic 3/4 Insulated Pant and layer them under our bib shells to add some warmth to those frigid mornings. We built these bottoms with two side vent zippers for breathability when the skintrack gets steep, and the water-resistant treatment ensures that we stay dry.

Perfect for shell pants

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These are perfect for cold days to wear underneath shell pants. The 3/4 length helps prevent bunching inside the boots. My only request would be some pockets. I typically wear these on the way to the mountain. Having a spot for my phone and keys would be nice.

I'm lucky to have the old version

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I never came back to review the old version, which does indeed have the full-length zipper on each side. The current version DOES NOT have this feature. That aside, I love these pants. They are very stretchy, have just enough loft to cushion your butt when wearing shell pants on the lift and in the wind. They breathe well. the 3/4th length is amazing. The only gripe I have with my older version is that there is only a pocket on one side. These pants are one of my favorite pieces of my skiing kit.

They?re alright

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I had an older version of these, I believe it was the first year they were made. Just replaced them with these and I?m not the most stoked. Mainly sad they got rid of the full length zipper on each side in exchange for a small vent that does nothing. I bought these so I could take them off touring without removing my shell. But it?s no longer possible to do.

Nice midlayer for resort skiing

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Resort skiing in the east, I'm typically good with my 250 wt merino wool tights and my shell pants until it gets down to single digits or below. But when the high is 3 and the windchill is -30, like it was in Okemo this past MLK weekend, that ain't enough. Enter these insulated knickers. I wear them as a midlayer, between lighter-weight merino tights and my ski pants. Keeps me warm all day, even when stuck in a long lift line or on a stopped lift. And they ventilate pretty well if I get too hot, as the zip vents align pretty well with those on my Arcteryx Sabre ski pants. Only reason for the 4-star is that the crotch on these pants is incredibly long -- in order to fit them under my ski pants I have to either hike them up under my armpits or fold over the waist band (I choose to do the latter), but then the combined shortness and high placement of the zipper makes going to the bathroom an adventure ... After appropriate crotchal realignment, the bottoms hit me right under the kneecap, which could cause a gap with some of my ski socks, but that's why I wear them over tights. Great fit, apart from that. Nice addition to my kit.

Super warm!!

These are great! I hate when I have to tuck in my baselayer into my mountain erring boots or ski boots. These are super warm for skiing and great when ice climbing! Highly recommend

Excellent base layer under ski pants

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

What I liked most about these pants are the length. They are stretchy for a form but not compression fit and fall to the top of your ski boots making for less bunch at your calves. They were warm baselayer under ski pants on a 3 degree ski day. Wore with darn tough wool ski socks was a winning combination. Vents that can be unzipped. Does not have full length side zip but I wore them like pants with no intention on taking them on or off during resort skiing. I would recommend.

Fantastic product. Wore over a medium weight base layer with a shell pant on a 0deg F damp and windy VT ski day. It was flat out cold and I was toasty. Fit is on the slimmer side but the stretch material moves with you effortlessly. Side vent is in the perfect place to match up with a shell that has zips on the outside of the leg.

Really great, but description is wrong

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Skier in the northeast and was wanting something to wear for warmth on cold lift days underneath unlined shell pants. I?d search for the Arc?Terx Axino Knicker but they seem to be low in inventory, so I was searching for something that was similar. These 3/4 pants from Backcountry fit the bill perfectly. I wear a 31 inch waist in jeans and a medium was a perfect fit with unhindered range of motion and able to accommodate a base layer comfortably. I cannot see wearing these while skinning, as I think they?d be too warm, but they do feel breathable so? one correction. These DO NOT have top-to-bottom side zippers for donning/doffing. Once they?re on, they?re on unless you strip down and remove boots. The side zips are about a foot long and are for venting heat. They also have a front zipper, making ?bio breaks? easier. Would highly recommend.
