Cottonwoods Gore-Tex Jacket

Why We Like It

We're not the type to shy away from storm days, not even when the flakes are melting on contact—that's because we've got the Cottonwoods Jacket, our secret weapon. This bombproof hardshell features a highly durable Gore-Tex construction that can handle our most adventurous runs, all while keeping our woolly long johns warm and dry. It's not as lightweight or stretchy as our Rustler Jacket, but we're pretty grateful for its protection when plowing through snowy mountains in the Pacific North West, or hunting for fresh powder off-piste. Articulated sleeve patterning still allows us the freedom we need for pole-planting and binding adjustments, and we tossed in a handful of thoughtful features to keep us comfortable and dry.

Product Features

Our passion, Gore’s Expertise

Our gear-loving expertise in the mountains goes back more than 20 years, and Gore-Tex is one of our favorite names in the game. Given our passion for the outdoors and Gore’s industry-defining expertise, it only makes sense that we teamed up to produce outerwear that defends on storm days and delivers comfort when we’re playing hard.

Benchmark for waterproof, breathable performance

Gore-Tex is a synthetic laminate that features thousands of tiny holes small enough to prevent water droplets from penetrating but large enough to allow water vapor to escape. This combination prevents snow and rain from reaching layers while still allowing hot air and water vapor to escape, managing moisture from external and internal sources.

Low-weight breathability for chasing goals

3-layer construction is more breathable, more packable, more durable, and lighter than its 2-layer counterpart, so it thrives during strenuous efforts in the worst weather. This construction features a technical laminate attached directly to a face fabric and a backer. Though it’s called 3-layer, the design works more like a single layer that seals out the weather while releasing excess heat and moisture. In this process, the face and backer provide protection while the laminate does the heavy lifting of sealing out water and releasing moisture.

Keeps even the sneakiest moisture at bay

Even the highest-rated membranes won’t do a whole lot of good if the seams between aren’t defended. We fully seal every seam on our technical outerwear, so melting snow doesn’t find its way into baselayers.

Modern style with room for layers

Our regular fit is built with inbounds resort riding in mind. The cut accommodates multiple insulated layers for the coldest days on hill, while still tapering in just the right places to provide a clean look that’s at home across the world.

Additional Details

Coverage from deep snow

Powder skirts are built into the inside of the jacket at the waist to prevent snow from blowing up into your layers while you slash and turn in powder. They feature a closure at the front and elastic around the bottom to create a seal that can keep snow out, or be undone for more comfort during days spent on-piste.

Cute and effective!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

This jacket kept me dry on a three day backpacking trip last January. Good ventilation, and the hood is large enough to fit over hats/helmets. Love the color, too! Does run slightly small.

Solid Petite Fit Jacket - But Size Up!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: S

I've never worn anything but an XS in my life, but ended up going a full size up to an S when I tested this jacket. The fit still felt pretty snug. I was a fan of the slim fit, but if you're curvier, this may be a bit of an awkward set up.

As far as the jacket quality - I took this for a spin in a solid storm, and was a big fan of the waterproofing. The material is definitely stiff, but it was reassuringly heavy-duty, and I really didn't notice it once I was skiing.

I was also **STOKED** on the media pocket on this. My phone is a old fragile thing that freezes the second it gets kinda cold, and this jacket somehow kept it magically warm almost all day? It was seriously witchcraft.

My only major complaints were that the water resistant zippers, while they work well for holding out water, were kind of clumsy to deal with with gloves on. I ended up opening up the pit vents a couple times, and honestly decided that I really prefer the old-school non-waterproof zippers with a flap over them, rather than built in waterproofing. Totally personal preference though! The other thing was that this jacket is supposed to snap in with the bibs, but I'm so short that once I sized up to the S, the snaps on the jacket were like a mile below the snaps on the bibs. Didn't really affect the performance - the jacket and bibs were still solid at keeping snow out, but something that's worth knowing.

Overall, I really liked this jacket, but I generally recommend sizing up, and be aware that it might be quite a bit slimmer than what you might be used to.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

I REALLY wanted to love this jacket, the color is amazing, it has everything you need, but it was so stiff and uncomfortable. I have a pretty average body, 5'7, athletic, not small not big, but if my hips had been any wider the jacket wouldn't have zipped at all. Keep workin on this backcountry, I have faith!

Fits weird...

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: small

I really love this jacket but the fit is a little weird. Like other reviews said, the arms are super long, it's pretty tight around the hips and a shorter torso than I'd like. It has a great performance though! I am thinking about sizing up to a medium?

Great jacket some fit issues

  • Size Bought: Small

Beautiful colors, great features, everything one would want in a ski jacket. But the front collar comes up almost over my nose, and the fabric is not very flexible, I tried on with various layers but just couldn't make it work when fully zipped up. Otherwise everything one would want in a ski jacket.

Review after unboxing

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Size Bought: Small

Initial thoughts after trying on: the material is very stiff. I hope as it gets worn more it will wear down a little and become more malleable. The sleeves are also too long...the thumb holes are well past my hands, so that might turn out to be a little annoying. Otherwise, I really like the color and I enjoy the slim fit.

Great jacket but funny fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XS

I really, really wanted to love this jacket, and I even made my self wear it a few times just to be sure I wasn't making a decision too quickly but at the end of the day the fit is too poor to be worth the money and sacrifice of efficiency and comfort especially in the back country. The hips are too tight and chest and shoulder area has way too much fabric making it bulky and difficult to maneuver. The arms are too long also. Such a bummer to return it because otherwise it's great! I have a curvy, athletic build and this doesn't seem to be compatible with that body make up.

Good material, bad fit.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I really wanted to love this jacket as the color is awesome (silver pine) and the material was thick and burly, but the fit was just awful for me. I have wide shoulders and hips, 29" waist, and ordered my normal Medium size in jackets. It was incredibly tight around my hips, and the sleeves were WAYY too long (I'm talking 3-4 inches) which made the thumbholes impossible to use. After 5 or so days on mountain, the zipper split at the bottom while on the gondola and I was able to work with warranty to return it.

Great jacket

  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: XS Small

I Love the color “High quality material.
I’m a very tiny person the Problem with me is the Sleeve too big and long, other than that the jacket is a amazing looks, Hope there are size XXS that would be perfect.

Cool material!

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Size Bought: Med

Picked these up for my lady and this is what she had to say. “High quality material at a reasonable price. The powder skirt on the arms is super handy. It fits true to size and is a quintessential shell.”

Beautiful Jacket

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: large

Gorgeous color ,excellent amount and placement of pocket s. Had to size up. I am 5"4 140 lbs and a medium would barley zip over my hips with jeans on. Neck comes up pretty high over chin and fits well with a helmet. Kinda stiff but seems to be softening as I work with it. Will update once we get snow!

Amazing Jacket for an amazing price. Overall this jacket has really held up well, got one for my girlfriend and she loves it. Paired with a good insulated jacket it can hold up in the coldest of temperature and still maintain good breathability for the warmer days.

What size did you buy? My wife is 6' and 145lbs.

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Have someone measure from the center of the back neck down the arm, with arm slightly bent, to the wrist bone.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure from the crotch to the floor with no shoes.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
