Why We Built The Cottonwoods GORE-TEX Bib Pant

Excuse us while we head out to find some waist-deep powder stashes this winter—we've got the eager help of our Cottonwoods Bibs, you see. We built these with everything needed to stay dry in the wettest of sidecountry or full-blizzard conditions. Using a burly GORE-TEX construction, the Cottonwoods defend against all manner of moisture, even from the inside, and we designed them to integrate seamlessly with our paired Cottonwoods Jacket, so we'll be safe and dry when we land those fresh turns.

  • Burly hardshell pants for skiing or riding in wet, snowy weather
  • Tough GORE-TEX fabric delivers waterproof, breathable performance
  • Articulated knees and stretchy side panels ensure easy mobility
  • Unzip the inner thighs when you need to cool off between runs
  • Internal gaiters block sneaky snow when you find yourself in powder
  • Scuff guards give your pants a longer lifespan despite crampons
  • Multiple pockets hold all essentials from gloves to goggles to pass
  • Adjustable waist offers a secure and comfortable riding fit

Love the huckleberry color

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: S

Love the huckleberry color, just wish the fit around the torso wasn't so tight. The side zipper would slide down and then come unzipped altogether, so it wouldn't be long before the entire top portion was totally undone and flapping open underneath my jacket. Also, hopefully the material used in future versions of this style is less stiff, and more relaxed.

runs extremely small

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: M

I so badly wanted these to work because I love the design, color, materials, etc -- but unfortunately these were ridiculously small in the thighs/ butt. I normally wear size 27 pants or a 4-6 in regular clothes and a S-M in snowpants; bought these in a medium and I could barely zip them over bare legs. Definitely not designed for skiers with muscular build.

Great product

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Gave it as a gift. Form-fitting and works great for their skiing/snowboarding needs.

Never buying another pair of bibs!!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

I was given this product by Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion.

I used the Backcountry Cottonwoods Bibs on all my snow adventures this winter. I live in Park City so I have access to the largest ski resort in Utah in my very own backyard, which means I snowboard nearly every single day. I have worn these bibs in a variety of conditions from sunny spring skiing weather to windy/blizzard conditions, and freezing temps. The Goretex feature in the Cottonwoods bibs not only never failed to keep me dry in all conditions, but held up against the roughest of riding. The bibs are tough and did not show any sign of wear or tear after taking spills or ripping against tree branches. The fit was perfect for me and I was honestly surprised! I am 5’10” and 150lbs and it is usually hard to find bibs that fit my long/athletic build. I went with the large for extra length and room for layers. The adjustable waistband helps to customize the bibs to the perfect fit. Front zipper pocket is where my phone lived all winter and the front thigh pocket was where I kept my pass. The long zipper on the side makes going to the bathroom a breeze ladies! Like I’m talking about popping a squat in some obscure trees on the mountain is so fast and easy. Overall I am truly obsessed with these bibs and wore them every single day this winter from Park CIty, to Targhee, to Snowbasin, to Brighton, to Colorado, and beyond. I can’t tell you how many times a gal would stop me in a parking lot or at the post office asking what brand my bibs were. My only feedback is I wish the color selection was a little better (more forest green colors for women gear please!). If you’re on the hunt for the all around functional, durable, comfortable, flattering bibs stop looking and buy these!

Never buying another pair of bibs!!

Fantastic bib

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I was given this product by Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. This winter I did a lot of skiing and also tried backcountry skiing for the first time. I skied in a variety of conditions ranging from powder, cold windy days, and warm spring days. This bib was perfect for all conditions! I love that the upper part of the bib can zip off so that I have the flexibility to use it both as a bib and pants, and this also makes it easier to get in and out of. The pocket positioning is great and the inner leg vents are great for warmer days. The zippers are somewhat stiff at first but they loosen up over time, and despite the bib being made of thicker material, it’s easy to move around in while skiing. Plus, they’re surprisingly warm for being just a shell. They are also VERY waterproof and the opening of the pant legs is large enough to fit over both ski and snowboard boots while slim enough to still look flattering and not bulky. I’m 5’3”, 120 lbs, waist is 27 and hips is 37. The Small is the best fit for me but the sizing is a little tricky. The Small fits me well around the waist/hips (loose fitting without feeling baggy) and the length of the pants (from waist down) is perfect for my height. But to get the upper bib part to fit, I have to loosen the shoulder straps as loose as they can go, so I suspect that the Small was made for someone a little shorter than me. The one thing I’m not crazy about are the velcro straps that are different from what the photos online show (they show an adjustable sliding/buckle). I wish it wasn’t velcro but regardless, the straps aren’t bad! Overall I love these bibs and would recommend them to my friends. The color I have is Gargoyle.

Fantastic bib

Love these, but top side zipper...

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M

I really like these bibs, my only complaint is the side zipper of the upper bib constantly comes undone... other than that pockets are great, feel is great. I sized up, because I fall in-between a small and medium, I wanted them to fit a bit looser for comfort skiing.

Awesome bib except....

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

I initially LOVED these bibs. Lots of intelligently placed storage pockets and vents. Unmatched waterproofness/breathability (thanks GORE-TEX). The zip-off bib is great for ease of bathroom use as well as the left-side leg zipper.

UNFORTUNATELY the left-side bib zipper does not lock into place when zipped and I spent 3 days constantly stopping mid-mountain to re-zip the side. I actually had to duct tape the zipper so it stayed zipped.

It almost totally defeats the purpose of using bibs as opposed to ski pants when your bib is flapping in the wind while carving turns. Backcountry's proprietary brand needs some work and maybe a little more product testing before sending to production for market sales.

durable af

Bibs are great for skiing powder since you don't have to worry about snow getting into places it shouldn't, but these bibs hold up especially well when you find yourself in a gnarly bushwhacky descent. I've squeezed between many a rough bush and surprise branches and honestly, you couldn't even tell the difference afterwards. They're durable as heck.

notable pros:

- dedicated beacon pocket with a leash

- has a comfortable athletic fit while still having room to slip on down pants for extra insulation

- side zips for easier backcountry bathroom breaks (some people seem to have issues here, but if you unzip both side zippers and just pull back that whole back panel it's super easy. No need to fuss with the shoulder straps!)

- gore-tex!!!

notable cons:

- sizing can be a little bit funky, I'd recommend ordering two sizes if you're between like myself

- kinda wish it came in pink

Runs a bit small perfect for ski touring

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: M

I am usually in between sizes (S-M) (I am 5’6 and 145lb) so I ordered size M. It fits perfectly. It is a bit snug around my butt and thighs making it just perfect for backcountry skiing. Note that I have very muscular thighs. I absolutely didn’t want these pants to be baggy and I’m glad they fit might pretty tight!

No way to zip up on the slopes

You have to be a contortionist to get into these (two zippers, one on the top and another on the bottom) and there is NO WAY you could zip yourself backup in the bathrooms at the ski resorts.

    Feedback from a Customer:

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

    • I was concerned they might not be warm enough because they were not insulated. I was wrong - they were perfect.
    • I like the idea of being able to choose either bib or take the bib portion off
    • I did have problems with the side zipper of the bibs. It is really hard to start the zipper. Zipping it was hard too.
    • I would prefer the zipper in front instead of the side for the entire bib/pant. Hard to see the zipper in relation to my breasts.
    • It was very hard to maneuver in the rest room. Had to pull straps over head at a weird angle, unzip the side upper zipper then the side lower zipper. Then reverse when all done. It was a hassle and if I didn’t like the bibs so much for everything else - It would be a reason to not get them.

    runs very small

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: small and medium

Runs very small, if you have wide hips, do yourself a favor and order two sizes up! I'm usually a small, tried both small and medium. I couldn't zip past my thighs with the medium. Material is very rigid.

    Great bibs- runs small

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought the cottonwoods for both my wife and I, and we are both very happy with the results. With the right base layers these bibs are well worth the price. We snowboarded in several different conditions: wet, cold, snowy, warm all with the same end result: DRY! I knew from the previous reviews that the women’s bibs ran small, so thank you all for that. Overall quite happy with the purchase and hope to have them for many years going forward.

Putting in my wife’s height & weight for context.

I like these pants. I had the same ones for 15 years so it's hard to make a switch. These have been good. I still get a little cold in the resort but I doubt that would be an issue in the backcountry when you're moving a lot more (also, I have a hard time staying warm in the resort so it's not necessarily the pants). I like all the pockets. I wish these pants were slightly more roomy, the length is good and no issues on the knees telemark skiing. I have a fuller bottom and it pulls a little in the front .I agree with a review below that wearing extra layers makes these feel snug. It would be hard to get more insulation on the legs without feeling like a stuffed sausage. These definitely run a bit small and has a slimmer fit. I wear a patagonia better sweater and long sleeve shirt on my upper layer and it fits fine.

    I'm 5'5" 135 lbs wearing a size medium.
Overall I do like these pants.

    awesome bibs

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great quality and fit. I read other reviews, so knew to order a little larger than I normally wear.

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I've had my eye on getting some bibs so gave these a shot. Yeah, no. The fit just felt awkward for me. I'm getting older and things are more round these days! The length was too long, the hips too tight and the torso a bit too big. I'm sure there are enough female skiers out there that a model of pant and jacket could be created that would accomodate those of us with hips. I keep hoping! I'm sure the tallgals wish there were pants with longer legs! These might be the ones!

Bottom half fits, but top is too tight

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XS

Bought these for my wife. She is typically a xs (size 4) and that was our first order. The material and quality is great. All the pockets and zippers help to make them easy to put on and take off.

The pants are composed of a top that zips onto the bottom pants. You can wear the pants without the top. The xs pant size was perfect, but the top bib portion was way to tight. It could barley be zipped on without extra warmth layers. She also mentioned the suspenders connected on the chest which was uncomfortable. We reordered a small and thos pants were too big and awkward, but the top fit. She decided to keep the xs and use without the bib top.

Her comment was that the sizing of the top bib seemed like an afterthought.

    Love the color!

    • Fit: Runs small

The hucklyberry color is so pretty! I love how you can zip off the bib part and they become pants!! I have never seen that before and think it is awesome! These are a bit more fitted then many ski/snowboard pants that are very baggy! If you want more room, I would suggesting sizing up!

    Strange fit

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: M

I usually wear a 6/8. The pants were tight in the hip and the thighs were so tight I could barely move. Below the knee they were very wide and very long, so sizing up isn’t going to be an option. I have no idea who these are supposed to fit.

I really liked the features and they seemed well made, so I’m super bummed I’ll be returning them.

    Didn't fit right.

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

For the money spent I want to love these! However, the fit felt weird. I'm a size 6 usually. The thighs were really tight, and the waist just didn't fit right. I felt stiff. I am going to return these.

    How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Have someone measure from the center of the back neck down the arm, with arm slightly bent, to the wrist bone.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure from the crotch to the floor with no shoes.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
