AstralBrewess Water Shoe - Women's

Footwear for trails, rivers, and pubs.

The Astral Brewess Water Shoe has a women-specific fit and a multi-functional style to bring kayakers more comfort on and off the water. Cordura sidewalls ensure long-lasting durability and abrasion resistance, and the Airmesh vamp and tongue allow airflow to help your feet dry quickly. Drainage at the front sidewall and a slit at the heel direct water out of your shoe every time you leave the river, and the Balanced Geometry midsole cradles your foot so you can cover technical terrain easier. The G.ss sole provides excellent traction on wet rocks and slippery floors.

Not a whitewater kayaking shoe

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

These are probably fine as a sub for sandals for river walking or casual kayaking (and maybe rafting) BUT I wouldn't use them for whitewater paddling (I'm returning them). They don't work with drysuit booties (just not sturdy enough/not enough space), don't provide any insulation, don't have arch/ankle support (which I want when I'm carrying my boat for awhile), and just feel kind of flimsy for walking on steep irregular slippery rocks.

ALSO I found that these run true to size. The 7s were 38 3/4 in European sizes, which is about what I'd expect.

Hey Chelsea, thank you for your review. The Brewess is used by many in whitewater situations, so I am sorry it didn't work for you. For a more bomber option, if that is what you are looking for, please try the Astral Hiyak or the Rassler. I think those models will work best for a more aggressive situation! And, when sizing for neoprene, please be sure to size up.

Thank you!

Great shoe for rafting trips.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Very comfortable and good grip on wet rocks. My daughter dislikes sandals on the river as they always seem to give her blisters. Bought her these and no more complaining. I also have a pair myself and love them!
I thought they ran pretty true to size maybe a little bit big, but that allows me to wear a neoprene wetsock with them when the water is cold.

Thank you so much for the review!

Great. Women's used mens sizes

  • Fit: Runs large

Great for kayaking. The women's run large! They must be using men's sizes as the sizes on the box are 9.5 and 42, which corresponds to men's size in comparison to European sizing.
Luckily returns and reorders are easy.

Hi Margaret, I found the same thing. Astral does use women's sizing, but I had to go down almost a full size on this model. Sometimes that does happen in footwear models. This is the only one that I needed to size down for from Astral.

Thanks for the heads up!

Agree. I ordered women's size 8 and the box arrived saying size US8, EU 41-1/2. Women's EU size is 38 or 39. Thank goodness Backcountry is awesome and will send new pair quickly.

Sturdy & comfortable

I bought these for a trip to the BWCA. They were ideal for portaging over mossy rocks, mud & tree roots, as well as launching canoes in the water in rocky areas. It was great to have toes protected. The water escaped through the vented holes in the soles. The bottoms proved to be very non-slip. These shoes made my trip. They run large. Recommend ordering 1/2 size smaller.

Thank you for the review, Karlyn! Agreed on sizing!

Stylish and Functional Water Shoe!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: 7.0

I bought this shoe for a trip to Costa Rica I just took. The shoe arrived 2 days before my trip and I was able to put my feet right in them and explore the country with no problems. Not only are they comfortable but very stylish for a water shoe. I put this shoe through intense water sports including white water rafting, waterfall repelling, canyoneering and hiking ... good news is .. they made it! They were supportive, light weight (even when water logged!) and had great traction in different terrains. I would highly recommend this shoe to anyone doing water sports.

*Like the other reviews mention this shoe runs big so I suggest ordering at least a 1/2 size down.

runs a touch big

  • Size Bought: 9.5

I compared the Brewess, the Loyak, and the Porter all from Astral.

The Brewess runs a touch large, and is the stiffest of the 3. Overall it appears to be a rad shoe, and super grippy. They also come with a second pair of laces in an alternate color. Our river guide last week was wearing these, and she seemed to be pretty stoked on them.

In the end, I decided to keep the Loyak (they won for most comfortable) and return the others.

Versatile summer shoe

I bought these shoes for an 8 day trip to the countryside in Idaho where I only brought these shoes and a pair of sandals. They were all I needed. While my friends fumbled around in their sandals on the river trips, the grip was outstanding and my toes felt protected from all the unforeseen debris and rocks in the water. Then we hit the trails and my feet didn't get a single blister or hotspot. They were comfortable the whole time. Even going out in town, these shoes were great because, while casual, they were more dressy than running/hiking shoes and sport sandals.

These shoes are my ultimate go to. I wear them for everything; kayaking, rafting, fishing, canyoneering, approach shoes/hiking. Everything. They are light weight (great for backpacking and traveling), super durable, quick dry, the most grippy sole ever and really good looking. Seriously, best shoe ever. I have multiple pairs : D You won't be disappointed!

Shoe for the Ultimate Waterwoman

The Brewess has it all. Comfort, Durability, and Sustainability. This shoe has lasted me a good year now, and still looks brand new when I give them a wash. I hike, bike, and paddle with these. You can wear them with or without socks. The soles are sticky and offer excellent traction in wet conditions.

They can be the one shoe for any trip both on and off the water, that still maintain their fashion as well as functionality. Trust me, you won't regret it...best money spent.

Awesome shoes for multisport

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 8.5

I use these shoes for creek boating, raft guiding, and mountain biking. I usually wear either an 8 or 9 in shoes. The 8.5 fits me perfectly, and can stretch out to easily accomodate the feet of my drysuit. I wore them during the Silverback Race on the Green River Narrows and gameland trails - straight through the kayaking portion into the mountain bike component. I actually prefer these shoes to clipless when mountain biking. They stick to my flat pedals and are great if you have to hike-a-bike. The closed shoe also keeps my toes safe when raft guiding and the grip makes me feel comfy running around on rocks :) Awesome shoe!

Sticky Sole

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Wore this shoe for 7 days on Futaleufu rafting trip. The sole provided excellent traction on wet & dry boulders & in the water. Not as good on dry leaves & dirt. Making the uphill hike to camp challenging at times. Drained adequately & dried quickly.

Bought my normal size shoe & it fit well to slightly long in length. The topline hit a little high & cut into the skin under the anklebone resulting in 2 open wounds on each foot.

Excellent!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

As a die hard Chaco wearer, I doubted I would be sold on the Astral Brewess Water Shoe...BUT...a girl can change her mind, right? On my first kayak outing wearing these shoes, I decided they were definitely the way to go. My feet were protected from sharp rocks, and the usual muck one encounters when kayaking. Plus, they were super comfy, not to mention cute. They dry quickly and I have even worn them on last minute excursions to the grocery store. I wear a womens size 9 and the shoes are true to size. Really nice shoes!

Excellent!

Love these!

These shoes have been amazing. Put the chaco's in the closet... No more rocks, sand and super grippy on those slippery rocks you always stub your damn toe on! Not to mention they also aren't too shabby to rock with a skirt or dress!

Awesome shoes!!!

I LOVE my brewers. I've had them for about two years now and I wear them on all of my kayak trips. Even in the play boat. On Multi-day excursions, they dry out fast and then I still have a pair of non soggy shoes to walk around in while at camp or hiking on a side trail. I am also very impressed with grip while walking up and over rocks if I have to portage a rapid. Great shoe....

Awesome all around shoe!!!

These shoes are truly amazing. I purchased them for kayaking a year ago, with their perfect fit and comfort I wear them everywhere. They have a low profile and stylish look that makes them great for any occasion weather it's a day hike, bike ride or even a night on the town. When it comes to water these are by far the best performing shoe I have owned. You can rest easy while scrambling over wet and slimy rocks. Also the most durable shoe I have owned that also fits into my playboat with ease.
