Grafton Hiking Shoe

The Men's Grafton Hiking Shoe is the first trail hiker that Altra made with canyoneering and approaches in mind. Its suede upper is incredibly strong yet surprisingly soft, and the longer rubber rands add durability where it matters most. Underfoot, the Grafton has a Vibram Megagrip rubber sole for the maximum traction necessary when you're setting up a rappel of the edge of some slippery sandstone.

  • Durable suede upper with long rubber rands for added strength
  • Vibram Megagrip rubber sole maximizes traction on trails

these are really goods shoes

I love that Altra expanded to produce scramble/approach shoe. I wear Altras literally all the time, and these have been my go to for desert slot canyon missions for the last year, and as a nice all around casual shoe for everyday wear as well. They have the classic Altra fit, but maybe a touch narrower than the trail shoes I run in, which is nice for steep or off camber rock.

Nice shoe. Runs a little short however, compared to other Altras. I ordered a pair running with my old King MT1.5's as the reference.... too short. Toes smashed up against the front. So I needed to return the 13's and go with 14.

I love these shoes. I'm a fan of altras but I'm no runner, but I've felt like the quality slipped the past couple of years. These shoes were my last attempt to give altras another chance and they've succeeded. The leather hugs your foot. The shoes have grip. The material doesn't feel cheap. They withstand weather and wetness quite well. I'm very happy and I'm already considering a second pair in case I get disappointed again.

Game-changing approach shoe

If you're like me and need a zero-drop shoe with a natural forefoot, you really had no good options for a legit approach shoe before the Grafton. I've used these for massive approach hikes (Red Rocks and in the San Juans), huge slabs, and even 5.10 warmups at Indian Creek. This shoe re-defines comfort in an approach shoe, while delivering a decent degree of technical performance. By definition, the natural toe-box means there's some room for your foot to move around, meaning the shoe isn't great on edges. But it has good friction on slabs and does quite well torquing in cracks. The BIG shortcoming of this shoe from a sports (climbing) perspective is its lack of a clip loop at the back of the shoe so you can throw them on your harness for the descent. With this correction, I'd never think of another approach shoe again.

Great new shoe from Altra with the Grafton. A more technical/beefier version of the Wahweap. You get the sticky Vibram outsole on this guy which is great for smooth services. Great step in feel with the suede and can take a beating no matter where you are headed off to on the trail. Strangely, this shoe also look really nice with jeans which makes this shoe perfect for the work adventure as well. Only change I would suggest is to smooth out the front of the shoe on the outsole for some smearing capabilities on rock. Otherwise, one of my favorite shoes to grab off the rack and go!

Tech and Comfort

Just got back from a great traverse of Devil's Castle above Alta. The Vibram outsole was definitely appreciated on some of the gritty and sandy exposed sections. More supportive and comfortable than the Lone Peaks that I have used in the past. Super comfy right out of the box and great to wear if you job has you on your feet all day!

Premium Outdoor Adventure Shoe

The Grafton is Altra's first go at a technical high end outdoor shoe and they nailed it. Having a full vibram outsole and durable abrasion resistant sticky rubber all around, it can take the nastiest granite boulder scrambles. Though, It still has the comfort of a running shoe and will get you down the mountain as easy as most trail runners do. Another prime feature of the Grafton is the suede upper which is soft while also durable (and looks badass). The only thing I'd change is having a little higher of an arch, and putting a carabiner loop on the back heel.
