Best hiking shoes ever

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I've had these for a few months now. I've hiked trails in Olympic NP, Mount Rainier NP, North Cascades NP and Great Smoky Mountains NP in anything from scree to gravel to dirt to snow. These are extremely comfortable, durable and well made boots. They are breathable and very waterproof--in fact one of their best attributes is the depth of submersion at which they will remain water-tight: I've slipped on rocks in a couple of creeks with water way past my ankle and not a drop made it inside. They are relatively insulated although not overly warm for summer but also not a winter boot or ice-climbing boot like you might use to summit Rainier--this being said, they are fine with traction spikes on icy trails at mid elevation. I really like them, and having owned La Sportiva, Salomon, Scarpa, Hi-Tec, and others over the years, I find these to be the very best all-around hiking boots I have ever owned. I got some for my wife too.

AKU Alterra-GTX

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I have had these boots for a few months now, very comfortable. I have worn them for 8 plus hours at a time and right out of the box the felt great. They have great traction in all terrain, snow, ice, wet rocks. I especially like the gusset, it goes right to the top of the boot. The lacing system works well, easy on and off. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who wants dry feet and great traction.

Great for hiking and everyday use

The AKU Alterra GTX is a great all purpose shoe as well as a hiking boot. I live in a rural area in VT where just getting around my property can be similar terrain as a mountain trail. The boot is lightweight but tough. I put it on in the morning and they stay on all day and get me through chores involving farm work, stone work, carpentry as well as daily hikes in and around my area. They are comfortable right out of the box and they "break in" to fit even better. The extra 1/4 inch protrusion from the Vibram sole on the instep or by the big toe takes a bit getting used to but on rocky terrain it is very "grippy" and stable especially if wearing a 30lb + pack. The shoelace system is the best I have seen and makes tightening laces a snap, without snapping laces! The only drawback I have encountered is the loop on the heal for pulling the boots on. It is too small for my fat fingers to fit into. I would certainly recommend this boot to any outdoor enthusiast.
