It's good cape weather this time of year. Besides a Detroit Lions jersey, there aren't many articles of clothing with worse status implications than a cape. I like the idea of a wearable blanket, but in terms of practicality, a cape would be tough for riding a bike, and you'd probably choke yourself the first time you sat on it getting into a car. My friend wore one a moped once and it worked okay, but I also decided the other day that the worst imaginable injury to have to tell people about would be getting your cape caught in the back wheel of your moped. All around bad news. My friend broke his foot at our kickball game, and he even had to tell people at work that it was a softball game. A moped/cape accident would have ruined him.

"Passionate" is the most overused word in job interviews and marketing material. Everyone's passionate about everything they're try to sell or the line of work they're trying to get into. You're passionate about working on the ad campaign for Absolute vodka? Really? That's just sad my friend, in so many ways. Whoever started throwing that word around had no regard for depth of the word passion, and frankly, it marginalizes everyone who's ever truly felt passionate about skiing, surfing, gardening, or anything else you love. I think we'll have to kick it up a notch when we talk about how much we love rock climbing or skating, and start using the phrase "being on a plane of existence only shared with those precious few who understand the depth of my commitment" to whatever you're really into. For me it's beer. Well, beer and bikes. Sure the phrase is mouthful, but that's why we'll be able to own it and won't see it usurped in catchy marketing phrases or job interviews.

Code Name: Secret Service

The Secret Service gives code names to the First Family. The nicknames across the family typically start with the same letter and will often have the same two-letter combination; I'm guessing so it'd be easy to rattle the names off in a hurry. For that reason, it would be unlikely that any president will have to contend with the code name Sbarro since that's the only "Sb" letter combination I know. No matter how you feel about his politics, you have to agree that Obama's code name, "Renegade," is super badass. I think it was likely a tongue-in-cheek choice for a skinny guy, and they wanted to give the rest of his family the names Renaissance, Radiance, and Rosebud, so they needed something with an "R" (not Rocky?). President Bush's code name is "Tumbler," and when Ted Kennedy ran for president his code name was "Sunburn." These two fall into the not-so-badass category, and you have to wonder why the President didn't lay down the law and explain that he wanted to be called Winged Freedom or Jack & Coke. I guess that you have to give a little bit of ground to the people whose job it is to step in and take a bullet if the job calls for it.

Being Sick and Star Wars
Tuesday, November 04 2008, 04:31 AM
Today's Deals on Steep and Cheap:
That getting sick feeling is the worst. Swollen glands, hot ears, scratchy throat, and a head full of things you're going to miss when you don't go to work the next day. I wish I could just enjoy being sick like when I was a kid. I would watch the full Star Wars trilogy that we'd taped off TV, so I had every line memorized plus all the commercials. The first time I saw the full-length non-edited-for-TV version of Star Wars, it was better than the times I saw any of the prequel Star Wars movies. There was actually a new animated Star Wars movie that came out a few months back, and I wouldn't have turned it off if it was on TV, but they only showed it in the theater by my house at matinees during weekdays. I could have gone and seen it if I'd have called in sick, but that would have been too depressing in so many ways.
Today on SteepandCheap we have some Big Agnes Seedhouse 3-Person Tents with Cross-Over Pole and Footprint, Smith Turntable Sunglasses, and Chaco Women's Flip Sandals.

Yet we don't get to see the good stuff the men have in their closets.... banana hammocks and such..
I am not sure that I would want to see any of the guys that I work with wearing one of those. It might just be disturbing.
