The trails can be a lawless place. Pedal-churning MAMILs, high-school hotshots, and wanna-be DH pros all think they own the place, and sometimes the only thing preventing anarchic pileups is the obscenely grippy WTB Vigilante TCS Light FR 27.5in Tire. Big, open knobs provide grip on wet and loose or hard and dry trails, while the Dual DNA rubber compound blends fast-rolling 60a rubber in the middle of the tire with grippy 50a rubber on the sides for the perfect balance of cornering and speed.
The Light FR version has a single-layer lightweight casing to cut down on the ounces, while the Tough and High Grip versions use a more durable double-layer Enduro casing. Other than that they're the same, with an all-mountain 2.3in width, and a light, flexible TCS aramid bead that lets you use tubeless or go tubeless.
- Q & A
Light, Grippy, and Predictable
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I have to say I am really happy with this tire. I had ridden WTB's in the past and felt they were soft, and tended to have sidewall roll and let go in corners. I have been running this tire on the front of my Diamondback Mission with Renyolds R27.5 AM wheels. I have found it more confidence inspiring than the Kenda Nevegals that came off of it, during hard cornering. It seems to grip well in a variety of conditions, and what little mud I have ridden though it sheds it well. Tubeless set up was a breeze and I have been running it at about 22psi with no burps or complaints. I like that the tire does not have obnoxious writing on the sidewalls (MAXXIS!!!!), and I have been puncture free. I was concerned about the lighter casing, but this has held up great moving quickly on a lot of sharp rocks. Make no mistake, despite what they say this is not a low rolling resistance tire. It is louder on the road than any tire I have heard before :) I will keep using this on my front wheel when it is time to replace it.
