Volcom Species Stretch Pant - Women's

Serious storm-proofing and a slim, flattering fit.

The Volcom Women's Species Stretch Pant knows how to shed wet winter weather thanks to its storm-stopping V-Science Stretch Twill fabric and taped critical seams. Its slim fit stays in close, and the stretch fabric means that you'll have optimum mobility for those terrain-park sessions. The Species also uses a breathable lining system and mesh-lined zippered vents to keep your core at a comfortable temperature.

Volcom gave the Species a Zip Tech pant-to-jacket interface that allows you to zip the pant into compatible Volcom jackets to keep out pesky backbowl powder snow and slush balls from botched tabletop landings. Boot gaiters with lace hooks come in wicked handy when the snow is deep. An adjustable inner waistband supplies a comfortable, secure fit while hand and back pockets stash your hotel key, lip balm, and snack money.

Love these pants!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

These ski pants are stylish yet functional. Very comfortable and warm! They fit more snug vs transitional ski pants and I had to purchase size larger than usual. The color is rich and love all the pockets and vents.

Thanks for the review Julie!

If a snowboard pant was made for yoga

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

This feedback comes from a girl that ONLY wears yoga pants. These pants look and feel sleek, providing incredible flexibility and softness that doesn't take away from their durability. They have been surprisingly warm on the really cold days. The vents allow the right amount of breathability when you want it, and none when you don't.

Nice fabric

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these in black and really like the fabric and that they match with whatever top I am wearing. They are a lot warmer than I was expecting them to be, but I have been wearing them with a base layer underneath. There are a couple of really small things that I don't like about these pants: they don't have a pocket for your ski pass, and they are really big around the waist so I have to wear a belt. Other than that, I think these pants are great and would definitely recommend them.

Amazing and great everyday snow pant!!!

Great for all-around function, the Species is unbeatable. Uninsulated but strong construction, solid design, comfortable fit, excellent materials, and classic styling they are definitely my go too pant this season. I just wish they made better colors like Grey, Charcoal or Khaki.

Depends on your body type

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Small

I think it really just depends on what your legs are like - some of the reviews said that for my height and weight a small would be perfect, and many of the reviews also said these pants fit true to size. However, I found that at least for me, the small was too small. They fit okay when I didn't put a base layer on under them, but realistically how often are you skiing without a base layer? I have pretty muscular thighs and big hips and the pants didn't seem to want to cooperate with that build. Despite the stretch that these pants claim to have, they just weren't stretchy enough. That being said, I'm wary of sizing up because I've also read multiple reviews that say the small was too small and the medium was too big, so considering my height and weight, I think I'd probably run into that issue, too. Oh well! After trying these pants on, I've decided they just aren't for me. The fit is definitely ~hip~ (think bell-bottoms for skiers) but I think I want pants with a bit more space in them, and also pants that are a bit more functional (eg. I don't know how comfortable I'd feel wearing these on a tour). In summation, I'd say if you're certain that you're consistently a small (or whatever size) these pants would probably work for some chill days at the resort!

Thanks for the review Emily! Super helpful to get this feedback out to the community.

Mrs. needed a new pair of pants that wouldn't soak up the snow on the lift or while sitting and strapping in. These pants are very well made and using the V-Science Stretch Twill fabric was perfect for her. They have just the right amount of stretch, style and accessibility with the pockets. Fit perfect for her size.

Fits well and is stylish!

  • Size Bought: M

These pants are great if you're looking for a non-insulated pair. I am 5'11'' tall and 140 lbs and went with the medium. They were a bit short on me which is why I removed one star. If Volcom offered a long length option, I'm pretty sure all my gear would be made by them! The fit otherwise was perfect for my body type; not loose and icky nor tight and restrictive. The Charcoal color is very nice but in my opinion it has a bit of a blueish tint.

awesome pants!!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I ordered both the Small and Medium for comparison, as I'm new to Volcom pants and the Small was a perfect fit (for reference, I'm a true 6 in pants). The Olive color is definitely more green than the photo above makes it seem, but the Port color is just as it appears and is gorgeous.

There's a good amount of stretch to these and the fit is slimming without being restrictive! I was able to get a pair of leggings underneath with ease. The only reason I didn't keep these was because I fell in love with Burton's Paradox Gore-Tex Pant and couldn't justify both.

Will I look silly skiing in these pants. I like them and would fit my fit body well, but I'm forty and don't want to look like I'm trying to look like a 25 year old snowboarder. Please be honest. Thanks

Hey Melissa, I don't think you will look silly at all! These pants are awesome and if you put them on and they make you feel like sunshine on a cloudy day then I say rock them!

I see plenty of older women rocking similar gear. There is a woman that skis at my local resort and she is in her 50's and you would never know. She shreds and looks amazing doing it( she rides a similar pant)!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Unanswered Question

Which jackets are compatible with the zipper at the waist of the pants. I bought a Volcom Bolt gray/port jacket (matches the port colored pant) from this site but it does not have a zipper that would connect to jacket.

Shred the Narr

I love Volcom. I guess you could call me Volcom obsessed because my wardrobe is 80% Volcom and these pants contribute to that because they fit so well, I love the color, and I know they will hold up on the mountain while I snowboard. I can't wait to wear them the next time I'm up there!!!

    Too short

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I am 5' 10" and was hoping these might be long enough, but they were not. Hit above my ankle and had to return them. Color and material were great though, and I would purchase again if a "long" length was an option.

My problem is just the opposite. I love the fabrics, style and fit everywhere but the length. At 5'3" I find them really long. Wish they came in lengths, I am not sure if having them shortened will compromise the quality.

    The best!!

These are hands down my favorite fitting snowboard pant I have ever owned. I have worn other Volcom styles (which I love) but come back to this tried and true style. The great stretch twill fabric and awesome waterproof rating and breathability make these a functional cute pant. There is no sacrifice here between fashion and function; you get it all! Super cute fit, comfortable stretch for no restriction in your moment and keeps you dry and happy on the mountain longer!

    Awesome board pants

    • Fit: True to size

These pants are way more comfortable than the North face freedom pants I used earlier this season. Great pocket placement, love the stretch, and the ziptech works great. I ordered the medium, 5'7" 125 lbs...good length not too loose.

    Yay for long length

I am 5'9'' and struggle to find a pant that is long enough but still stylish. These pants are exactly what I was looking for. I am 130 lbs and got a size M which fit perfect. Slim (but not tight) in the thigh and more room at the bottom so they fit nicely over boots-- Not tight in the butt either. I only have wore them riding twice but they are super comfy and I am very pleased. The bottom stays snug around your boot so the pant doesn't lift and look short on the lift and when buckling in which is a plus for tall girls like me. I got the brushed nickel color and they are better in person- textured (not shiny) and a darker grey than the picture.

What is the difference, in inches, between an XS and S? The overall length, the inseam length, the waist width, and the length of the rise. The small is big on me, but I'm not sure if the XS will be too small. Thank you for any input.

    Hey Megan!

Here are some measurements from the sizing chart. Hope this helps ya! THINK SNOW!

    Length: 5' - 5'2" (152.4 - 157.5cm)

    Waist: 24 - 26in (61.0 - 66.0cm)

    Inseam: 28 - 30in (71.1 - 76.2cm)

    Length: 5'3" - 5'6" (160 - 167.6cm)

    waist: 25 - 27in (63.5 - 68.6cm)

    Inseam: 30 - 31in (76.2 - 78.7cm)

    Not really slim fit...

I have these pants from a couple years ago and wanted another pair in a different color, but unfortunately these are not the same and are way too big when they are suppose to be slim fit, so I had to return them...bummer! Still looked like an awesome pant though...

The Perfect Pants For Petite Gals!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love love love these pants. They are so comfortable and form-fitting. I bought a pair in black a few years back and loved them so much that I came back for a new pair this year. I now have the bronze in XS and they fit PERFECTLY! I'm tiny (5'1, 102 pounds), so almost every other pair of pants out there makes me look like I'm drowning in fabric. Not these. And they keep me super warm and dry. I highly recommend them to all the petite/thin girls out there who want high quality pants without the bulk. Love!

    Doesn't fit over hips

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

These pants seemed great, but they just don't fit me right. I'm 5'6 and 160 lbs, very muscular, with larger thighs/hips/butt. I just can't find a pair of pants to go over my butt! They all sit too low, too tight, and then I have a big flare in the back because they are technically too big anyway. I've ordered and returned about 3 pairs of pants now. Such a bummer!
