So much versatility in one stylish package.
The Mountain Briefcase from Topo Designs is basically the multi-tool of the commuting pack world. With this versatile, rugged, and seriously sick-looking bag, you have the option to use the stowable backpack straps, a removable shoulder strap, or the briefcase carry handles, so you can ride your bike, climb trees, chase squirrels, catch flights, or crush business meetings with the appropriate style. Burly Cordura fabric on the outside is combined with a coated pack cloth liner to help repel moisture and protect your valuables, like the laptop you've stashed away in the padded inner sleeve. Inside, Topo also hooked up a zippered organizer pocket for your miscellany and included external cinch straps that let you tighten up your load, or to strap extra gear onto the outside of the briefcase for top-notch preparedness.

Great bag but back pack straps are short
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
Really cool bag. Love the concept/idea, but the bag pack straps are way too short. If the bag is full and I'm wearing any sort of jacket, it barely fits around my shoulders.
Perfect for the mountain professional
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
True mountain workers understand the need to have a hardy briefcase, one that can hold up to the demanding mountain weather. This case does just that and more.
This bag itself will be able to withstand the frequent mountain showers of summer or the melting snowflakes during winter. A little bit of water will not harm the hardy outer material, which makes this bag great to bring during frequent outdoor walks or even a trek up a hill just to get some quiet time with your laptop and work duties.
And donât worry about ways to carry the bag â it has straps that allow you to carry it with your hand by your side, a shoulder strap for quick office jaunts or meetings, and even backpack straps to use if you need more room on your sides. The backpack straps look like they would get in the way if you were carrying the case on the side, but that worry goes quickly out the door once you secure them neatly into the foldable flap on the back. You donât even notice that they are there.
I can absolutely say that I am in love with the bag and itâs versatility. I highly recommend it for mountain professionals.
Well done Topo!
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
Great bag for on the job. little more professional than a backpack when walking into meetings. great quality
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This review won't quite live up to Lisa's Amazeballs review below but I wanted to say that everything she says is spot on. Such a rad pack.
This is a great pack for the aspiring businessman with a rugged look. I love that it has a velcro strap to hold my laptop its sleeve so its not bouncing around too much. The look of this bag is awesome. It's different then everything else you see out there and has this look that makes people look your way. It puts off a rugged but professional image. I would recommend this pack to anyone that is on the move a lot that needs to carry a laptop as well as have space for everything you need day to day.
One big outside pocket
This is a great feature for other items, keys, whatever you don't want lost on the bottom of the bag.
I like one big pocket because I don't have to worry about things fitting into organizer compartments. I have a small travel bag inside holding the smaller items so they don't get lost in there.
The yellow is a great contrast color. Makes finding your stuff SUPER EASY!
This is my favorite feature. I've been searching everywhere for a work bag with briefcase handles, backpack straps, and a shoulder strap. I never know how I'm going to use it and I'm tired of switching bags every time I need a specific function.
It's IMPORTANT to know the DIFFERENCE between this bag and the commuter... these straps are THINNER. They aren't meant for long rides or commutes. If you want more support and comfort, the commuter bag will be better. This is perfect for me because I don't want the BULK of the commuter straps.
Everything is still awesome
This is holding a 15 in HP laptop (that isn't very thin). 1 inch binder with my wallet and some running shoes and the outside pocket has a few things as well. Still closes comfortably. I could squeeze more if I wanted! The best part... it's standing on it's own. This thing doesn't fall over when it's full. I can safely set it down on the floor and get in it without it being wobbly.
Everything is awesome
This photo is just to show the design of the bag. It's super clean and sharp looking. I bought different colored zipper pulls and changed them out (I felt like the red was more manly and I wanted to girl it up a bit!)
AMAZBALLS for sure
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Ok so I JUST got this bag in the mail and I can already tell it's going to be perfect.
I have been on the hunt for the PERFECT work bag forEVER. I've tried so many different bags but I've never been more excited about a bag than I am with this one. You how you just know something is right? That's how this feels.
The video posted here will pretty much tell you all you need to know. It's what convinced me to give it a try.
My non-negotiables were as follows:
*briefcase handles, backpack handles, and a removable shoulder strap.
*HAD to open briefcase style (think landscape, not portrait).
*Needed to have a big enough space for my lunch AND a laptop (IT ALL FITS!!!)
*Had to STAND UP on it's own.
*Needed at least one external pocket
Things I could bend on:
*water bottle slot on the outside (Nalgene fit fine on the inside).
*tons of organizer pockets
So basically this bag has a wide enough base to hold my lunch, a power cord, a nalgene, and some other random stuff. It's sturdy enough not to fall over when I set it down (CLUTCH!) and I love that I can throw it over my shoulder however I want. Some days when I carry other bags, I want the option to wear it as a backpack OR shoulder bag. The briefcase grab handles are perfect for moving around quick, throwing it in the car, etc... Yep I've tested all my basic movements already.
I was so hesitant given it's listed size but I LOVE it. It will keep me from over packing and still allow me to take what I need to work without a giant bulky backpack.
The inside is bright yellow so I can find everything super easily. Some might complain about the lack of organization, but I love the deep outside pocket. Perfect for a small things, keys, etc... The tighter the pocket, the less likely I am to use it.
The Navy was the color I chose - it's simple and clean. I would have preferred multi color but I decided to try to be simple in case I needed it for super professional use.
the bottom compression straps are a little hidden gem - you can tighten up the bottom of the bag if you only have a laptop in there and don't want it sloshing around when you're on your bike. OR if you want to pack an extra layer and don't have any room left inside... perfect.
Zero complaints so far.

This guy should review everything. Even a Tesla.
