Awesome product

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was a bit hesitant after reading several of the reviews on various sites stating that it wasn't great to use as a shoulder bag. That being said, I purchased it to strap on to a motorcycle so that was a non-issue, and this thing is top notch in that role. It's great to have a bag that's the same dimensions as the older style Topo Light Hip pack, but with a greater depth and the ability to store fuel bottles on the bike. The interior and exterior pockets are well thought out, and the bottom straps for attaching items below or cinching the bag down to be smaller is an awesome feature. The quality is typical Topo Designs (which is to say awesome), and weather resistance is great. I've carried groceries, jackets, non-sensitive electronics, etc in this bag, and would definitely recommend it as long as you have an understanding of the shortcomings of the product that other's detailed in their reviews. I've done around 1700 miles with this thing strapped to the bike, and it hardly shows any wear and tear despite being left out in the sun and rain.

To be honest, there isn't currently a bag that fits the niche that this item fills in Topo's lineup. The newer Quick Pack works great as a shoulder/hip pack, but lacks the features that this bag has. If you're looking for something to Macgyver into a semi-permanent bag setup on another item, I can't recommend this enough, and at $90 it's a steal.

Weird.

Topo usually knocks it out of the park, but this thing is just not designed at all for who it's marketed towards. There are three main problems. 1. where the strap meets the bag - literally if you put anything in it, the bag will hang at a 45 degree angle down and away from your body. The only way to avoid this is to use the waist strap. 2. Velcro only closure that you have to open all the way to gain access to inside. 3. Zipper pull catches the Velcro of the flap. Wtf. So annoying. It frayed after like a week of use and looked old as heck. Customer service was probably as nice as they could be and sent me a new pull but a new pull won't prevent my gear from dumping all out. Oh, and bonus complaint - better hope it doesn't start raining, because it's literally an open compartment with a flap over the top and will let all that rain in on either side. Bottom line - this bag has no purpose. Stay away.

Cost me $1800

The strap attaches to the bag way too low, so it's constantly leaning away from you, in danger of dumping all your stuff out. The main closure is velcro only, so if it does tip, it will definitely dump all your stuff out.
It dumped out one of my most expensive lenses, which is now totaled. Do not buy.
